Measurements were made of the cross section of the reactions π − p → ν ′(958)n, η ′ → 2 γ at momenta at 15, 20, 25, 30 and 40 GeV/c. The experiment was carried out on the IHEP 70 GeV accelerator using the 648 channel hodoscope spectrometer NICE for γ-ray detection. A total of 6000 η′ mesons were recorded. A sharp drop is seen in the differential cross section for t → 0. The dependences of the differential cross sections for the π − p → η ′n and π − p → η n on t are identical. On the basis of the ratio of the cross sections for these reactions at t = 0, i.e. R( η′ n ) t=0 = 0.55 ± 0.06 , the singlet-octet mixing angle for pseudoscalar mesons was determined to be β = −(18.2 ± 1.4)°.

Polarization Parameters in the Reactions $\pi^- p$ (Polarized) $\to \eta n$ and $\pi^- p$ (Polarized) $\to \eta^\prime n$ at 40-{GeV}/$c$

Z.Phys.C 35 (1987) 173, 1987.
Inspire Record 222760 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.40802

The polarization parameter in the reactions π−p→ηn and π−p→η′n at 40 GeV/c with −t ranging from 0 to 2.6 (GeV/c)2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2, respectively, was measured in experiments using a propanediol polarized target. Only gamma particles from the neutral meson decay were detected. The polarization parameter of the first reaction turns out to be negative in a widet interval (0.05<−t<1.6 (GeV/c)2) and probably changes its sign at larger values oft. The average value of the polarization parameter of the second reaction is equal to −17±8)% in the region 0.05<−t<0.5 (GeV/c)2.

Study of narrow mesons near their thresholds

A novel form of mass spectrometer has been used to measure the masses, widths, and cross sections of the η, ω, X0(958), and φ mesons near their respective thresholds in the reaction π−+p→missingmass+n. The incident momentum is varied in small steps through the threshold while neutrons of a given momentum are detected near zero degrees. The lower limit of the c.m. momentum P* at which measurements have been made ranges from about 50 MeV/c at the φ to about 30 MeV/c at the η. A somewhat low value for the ω mass, 782.3 ± 0.6 MeV, is found. The width of the X0 is < 1.9 MeV (95% confidence level). All four mesons show evidence of S-wave production, with values of σP* of 21.2 ± 1.8, 0.35 ± 0.03, and 0.29 ± 0.06 μb/(MeV/c) for the η, X0, and φ, respectively. A rapid rise in the ω cross section appears to be modified by a final-state interaction. The effect of this rise can probably be seen in some S11 pion-nucleon phase-shift solutions. Evidence is also presented of a sudden drop in the π+π− mass spectrum just above the threshold for the production of a K+K− pair. The paper includes a comprehensive discussion of the method and of the details of the spectrometer.

Comparison of the Differential Cross-sections for $\pi^- p \to \eta^\prime n$ and $\pi^- p \to \eta n$ at 8.45-{GeV}/$c$

Inspire Record 8522 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.27193

The ratio R of the differential cross sections for π - p→ η ′n and π - p → η n has been measured with high statistics and small systematic errors at 8.45 GeV/ c . R is generally interpreted as the relative content of nonstrange, ground-state quarks in η' and η. We find that R decreases with increasing ⋎ t ⋎; however, extrapolation to t =0 gives R (0) = 0.672 ± 0.032 (statistical) ± 0.47 (systematic) for the dominant spin flip cross sections, and R (0) = 0.500 ± 0.035 for the spin non-flip, in excellent agreement with results at higher energy. An improved value of the branching fraction ( η '→ γγ )/( η '→all) of 0.0200 ± 0.0018 is obtained.

A high-statistics measurement of the reaction π − p→ η n; η →2 γ has been performed at the 70 GeV Serpukhov accelerator for 15, 20, 25, 30 and 40 GeV/ c incident pion momentum using the NICE set-up with its associated 648-channel hodoscope spectrometer for γ-ray detection. It is found that the spin-flip and non-spin-flip amplitudes can be parametrized, for small | t |, as exponentials with the same slopes to within a few percent. For | t | ≳ 1 (GeV/ c ) 2 there is a break in the differential cross section. In addition, the A 2 effective trajectory deviates markedly for | t | ≳ 1 GeV/ c ) 2 from the linear behaviour valid for smaller | t |.

In a scintillation-counter experiment, we have observed two narrow, neutral mesons in addition to the well-established η′ (958) in the reaction π−p→M0n at 2.4 GeVc. We observe a mass of 940.5 ± 1.7 MeV, Γ<10.4 MeV for the M0(940), and a mass of 962.9 ± 1.7 MeV, Γ<5.9 MeV for the δ0.

Differential cross sections for π − p → η 0 n, η 0 → 2 γ have been measured from 20 to 50 GeV for four-momentum transfers − ≲ 3 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The cross sections decrease as a power of momentum and the forward scattering cone shrinks slowly. The parameters of the A 2 trajectory, which is considerably non-linear, have been determined.

Differential Cross-Section for pi- p --> eta0 n at 6.0-GeV/c

We have measured the differential cross section for π−p→η0n at 6.0 GeV/c from 6730 very clean events in which the decay η→π+π−π0 was detected. The high statistics reveals a sizable forward turnover, implying a dominance of the helicity-flip amplitude. A precisely determined A2 trajectory, linear for |t|<1.0 (GeV/c)2, is found from combining our data with those at energies up to 101 GeV.

The Reaction pi- p ---> eta n at High-Energies

Measurements on the reaction π−p→ηn have been carried out at Fermilab with beam energies from 20 to 200 GeV in the same experiment in which pion charge-exchange scattering was studied. The differential cross sections have a pronounced dip in the forward direction. The data can be described well by a simple Regge-pole model but the resulting A2 trajectory is not degenerate with the ρ trajectory extracted from the charge-exchange data.
