The production of ρ 0 (770) and f(1270) is studied in π − p interactions at 16 GeV/ c . By comparison with inclusive K ∗0 production in the reaction K − p → K ∗0 + anything, and with inclusive ρ 0 production in the reaction pp → ρ 0 + anything, it is found that the data can be interpreted in terms of two production processes: the central production of resonances and the fragmentation of the beam particle. For the π − p reaction, the inclusive ρ 0 beam fragmentation cross section is 3.1 ± 0.3 mb while that for central production is 1.6 ± 0.5 mb. The ρ 0 central production cross section is consistent with increasing with energy as ln s behaviour. The ratio of ρ 0 to π − inclusive cross sections (excluding the leading π − ) is ∼0.2, independent of energy. The ρ 0 to π − ratio increases as a function of p T to a constant value of ∼ 1 2 above 1 GeV/ c . The ρ (charged and neutral) and f decays account for (25 ± 4)% and (1.4 ± 0.3)%, respectively, of all pions produced.

The production of the f 0 (1270) has been studied in the reaction π − p → π + π − n at 12 and 15 GeV/ c in the momentum transfer range 0.02 to 0.80 GeV 2 . Differential and total cross sections for the reaction π − p → f 0 n have been determined. The f 0 decay density matrix elements have been evaluated requiring all the matrix eigenvalues to be non-negative. The relative unnatural and natural parity exchange contributions to the f 0 production have been studied. The results are compared with a Regge exchange model formulated in terms of the pion and A 2 exchanges including cut contributions.

Using bubble-chamber data on the reactions π+d→pspπ0π0, π+d→pspπ+π−, and π−p→nπ+π− at 7 GeV/c incident π momentum, π−π phase shifts are determined for 0.6<M(ππ)<1.5 GeV/c2. An I=0S-wave resonance is observed in the f0 peak region of M(ππ). Constructive ρ−ω interference is found in the reaction π+n→pπ+π− and evidence is presented for some specifically deuteron effects in the data with large spectator-proton momentum.

Production of f0 mesons in 4.5-gev/c pi- p interactions

An optical spark chamber and neutron time-of-flight spectrometer experiment studied the reaction π−p→π+π−n at incident pion momentum of 4.5 GeVc in the mass region of the f0 meson. Analysis of the data shows no evidence for anomalous structure in the f0 mass spectrum. The two-pion differential cross section in the f0 region is consistent with Wolf's one-pion-exchange model for momentum transfers (squared) −t≲0.7 (GeVc))2. The differential cross section is larger than that predicted at high momentum transfer, and may be attributed to natural-parity-exchange contributions as evidenced in the f0 decay distribution.

Final states produced by charged baryon exchange in π − p interactions at 12 GeV/ c laboratory momentum have been studied. Forward neutrons with momenta determined by a calorimeter to be greater than 8.5 ± 1.4 GeV/ c triggered the SLAC 40-inch hydrogen bubble chamber which operated at a 10 Hz expansion rate. We report data on the reactions π − p→n π − π + , π − p→n π − π + π 0 , and π − p→n π − π − π + π + . In π − n π − p→n π + , production of ϱ and f mesons is observed. Differential cross sections are derived and compared with data at lower incident momentum and with theoretical models. In π − p→n π − π + π 0 , ω production is observed with a differential cross section having a deep near u ′= 0.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 . In π − p→n π − π − π + π + , Δ − , ϱ and f production is observed . The observed mass distributions appear to indicate the production of wide resonaces decaying into ϱππ. Some evidence for ϱ-ω interference is also observed.

We have studied backward meson and baryon production in π−p→nπ+π− at 8 GeV/c using a streamer chamber triggered by the detection of the interaction of the neutron in thick-plate optical spark chambers. Our data sample of 866 events is dominated by the quasi-two-body final states Δ−(1232)π+, nρ0, and nf0. We study the differential and total backward cross sections for these states and the decay angular distributions of the resonances. The results for the Δ− and ρ0 indicate that both nucleon and Δ exchange in the u channel are important in their production, while f0 production is, as expected, consistent with nucleon exchange.

The KS0KS0 system produced in the reaction π−p→nKS0KS0 at 6.0 and 7 0 GeV/c has been studied utilizing the ANL 1.5-m streamer-chamber facility. A 400 000-photograph exposure yielded 5096 unweighted nKS0KS0 events. The cross section for this reaction was determined to be 9.6 ± 1.3 μb at 6.0 GeV/c and 8.7 ± 1.1 μb at 7.0 GeV/c. The decay angular distributions were parametrized in terms of moments of the spherical harmonics. The 〈Y40〉 moment was fitted to interfering Breit-Wigner amplitudes for the f and f′ mesons. Using this fit, the branching ratio R=Γ(f→KK¯)Γ(f→all) was found to be (2.3 ± 0.8)%. An energy-independent production-amplitude analysis revealed an enhancement in the S-wave amplitude near 1300 MeV. The properties of the S-wave enhancement are discussed and compared with those observed in other recent experiments. Extrapolated cross sections for the reaction ππ→KS0KS0 are presented. We find a cross section considerably below the S-wave unitarity limit in the S* region.

A Model Independent Partial Wave Analysis of the Reaction $\pi^- p \to K^+ K^- n$ at Approximately 18-{GeV}/$c$

The reaction π − p→K + K − n has been studied on a hydrogen target (27 000 events) at 18.4 GeV/ c and on a polarized target (54 000 events) at 17.2 GeV/ c . A combination of results of both experiments allows a partial-wave analysis of the K + K − system between 1.1 and 1.74 GeV mass without any model assumptions. In general our fits yield unique solutions. Using results of our previous analysis of π + π − final states and assuming the dominance of the positive G -parity states in the K + K − system, the branching ratios BR ( K K /ππ) of partial waves into K K and ππ are determined. The S-wave appears to be mainly a broad ε (1300) with BR ( K K /ππ) = 0.068 −0.021 +0.017 . The weak P-wave can be described by a tail of the ϱ(770) with BR ( K K /ππ) = 0.081 −0.025 +0.029 . The D-wave is interpreted in terms of a superposition of f(1270) + A 2 (1310) + f′(1515) resonances. The fit yields BR ( K K /ππ) = 0.069 −0.031 +0.023 for the f(1270) and BR( ππ /all) = 0.027 −0.013 +0.071 for the f′(1515). The F-wave shows the g(1690) meson with BR ( K K /ππ) = 0.191 −0.037 +0.040 . All the above values refer to the t bin between 0.01 and 0.20 (GeV/ c ) 2 . Some results are also given for the high- t region.

We present results on an amplitude analysis of the K + K − system produced in the reaction π − p→K + K − n from threshold up to 2.2 GeV. The branching ratios of f 0 and f' to K K have been determined. In the low mass region of the K K system the observation of an S-wave enhancement at 1.3 GeV and the interference of the f 0 -A 2 -f' mesons are studied. We observe a 3 − structure in the mass region of 1.7 GeV which is consistent with g 0 production. With this interpretation the branching ratio g→ K K has been determined. Evidence for a new structure in the J p = 2 + wave around 1.8 GeV with a width of ∼200 MeV is presented.
