We have measured the differential cross section for π−p elastic scattering at 180° in steps of 0.10 GeV/c or less in the region P0=1.6 to 5.3 GeV/c. We detected elastic scattering events, from protons in a liquid H2 target, with a double spectrometer consisting of magnets and scintillation counters in coincidence. The incident π− beam was counted by scintillation counters. The cross section was found to have considerable structure. This may be interpreted as interference between the resonant amplitudes and the nonresonant or background amplitude. Very strong destructive interference occurs around P0=2.15 GeV/c, where the cross section drops almost two orders of magnitude in passing through the N*(2190). Another interesting feature of the data is a large narrow peak in the cross section at P0=5.12 GeV/c, providing firm evidence for the existence of a nucleon resonance with a mass of 3245±10 MeV. This N*(3245) has a full width of less than 35 MeV, which is about 1% of its mass. From this experiment we were able to determine the parity and the quantity χ(J+12) for each N* resonance, where χ is the elasticity and J is the spin of the resonance.

Comparison of 20 exclusive reactions at large t

Inspire Record 377535 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.50306

We report a study of 20 exclusive reactions measured at the AGS at 5.9 GeV/c incident momentum, 90° center of mass. This experiment confirms the strong quark flow dependence of two-body hadron-hadron scattering at large angle. At 9.9 GeV/c an upper limit had been set for the ratio of cross sections for (p¯p→p¯p)(pp→pp) at 90° c.m., with the ratio less than 4%. The present experiment was performed at lower energy to gain sensitivity, but was still within the fixed angle scaling region. A ratio R(p¯ppp)≈140 was measured at 5.9 GeV/c, 90° c.m. in comparison to a ratio near 1.7 for small angle scattering. In addition, many other reactions were measured, often for the first time at 90° c.m. in the scaling region, using beams of π±, K±, p, and p¯ on a hydrogen target. There are similar large differences in cross sections for other reactions: R(K−p→π+Σ−K−p→π−Σ+)≈112, for example. The relative magnitudes of the different cross sections are consistent with the dominance of quark interchange in these 90° reactions, and indicate that pure gluon exchange and quark-antiquark annihilation diagrams are much less important. The angular dependence of several elastic cross sections and the energy dependence at a fixed angle of many of the reactions are also presented.

Measurements have been made of the asymmetry in the scattering of π− mesons by a polarized proton target. Scattered π mesons and recoil protons were detected in arrays of scintillation counters; data were obtained at 16 scattering angles at each of 8 beam momenta between 875 and 1578 MeV/c. Analysis of these data together with earlier differential-cross-section measurements shows that there must exist at least three resonances in this energy region: (i) mass 1920 MeV/c2, Γ=170 MeV/c2, I=32, F72; (ii) mass 1682 MeV/c2, Γ=100 MeV/c2, I=12, F52; and (iii) mass 1674 MeV/c2, Γ=100 MeV/c2, I=12, D52.

Differential cross sections have been measured for π − p elastic scattering at laboratory momenta in the range 1.2 to 3.0 GeV/ c for the c.m. range 0.97 > cos θ ∗ > −0.98 . The corresponding mass range is 1.78 to 2.56 GeV/ c 2 . The data was obtained from a counter experiment in which the scattered pions and protons were detected in coincidence by arrays of scintillation counters.

DECAY DISTRIBUTION OF HIGH TRANSVERSE MOMENTUM RHO MESONS

The exclusive process π−p→ρ−p has been measured at 90° c.m. with an incident pion momentum of 9.9 GeV/c. We present data on the angular dependence of the decay ρ−→π−π0. We observe a strong azimuthal dependence in the decay in the c.m. helicity frame of the ρ. Such an azimuthal dependence is not compatible with SU(6) valence-quark perturbation calculations.

Pi-minus p elastic scattering at 2.51, 2.76, and 3.01 gev/c near t approximately equals -3 (gev/c)-squared

Inspire Record 58788 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.21636

Differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of negative pions from hydrogen have been measured over a limited range of squared four-momentum transfer (t) in the vicinity of t≃−3 (GeV/c)2 for incident pion momenta of 2.51, 2.76, and 3.01 GeV/c. These measurements confirm the existence of a minimum in the differential cross section in this region of incident momentum and scattering angle. The minimum occurs at a smaller value of t [t≃−2.6 (GeV/c)2] than has been observed at higher momenta.

We have measured the reactions π±p→π±p and π+p→K+Σ+ at 5.0 GeV/c in the region 2.2<−t<3.5 (GeV/c)2. We find the minimum cross section of the dip at −t=2.8 (GeV/c)2 in π+p elastic scattering to be 0.16 ± 0.05 μb/GeV2. The π−p differential cross section exhibits similar structure, while the π+p→K+Σ+ channel shows a steady decline in cross section as |t| increases. The polarization of the Σ+ remains large and positive to at least −t=2.8 (GeV/c)2.

The reactions π − p → p π − and π − p → p ϱ − ( ϱ − → π − π 0 ) at 10 GeV/ c with the proton in the forward direction in the c.m.s. are discussed on the basis of 953 elastic scattering events and 2240 events of the reaction π − p → p π − π 0 . The total backward cross sections are 0.52±0.10 and 1.52±0.28 μ b, respectively. In both cases the production mechanism is compatible with the dominance of the baryonic Δ δ Regge trajectory exchange. The ϱ − decay angular distributions are studied in the u -channel helicity frame and the spin density matrix elements are presented as functions of u .

Pi-minus p elastic scattering at 2.26 gev/c

The elastic scattering of negative pions on protons at 2.26 GeVc has been studied using the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory 72-in. hydrogen-filled bubble chamber. The elastic scattering cross section is found to be 8.91±0.24 mb. The forward diffraction peak is well fitted by an exponential in the square of the four-momentum transfer, and the slope is found to be 8.8±0.1 GeV−2. The differential cross section is parametrized in terms of three models: optical, strong-absorption, and two-slope. It is found that the two-slope model affords the best description of the data and also does very well in predicting the polarization data of other experiments. The best-fit parameters for all three models are given. In addition, the amplitudes associated with the best fits are given for the strong-absorption and the two-slope models.
