The total cross sections for pionic charge exchange on hydrogen were measured using a transmission technique on thin CH2 and C targets. Data were taken for pi- lab energies from 39 to 247 MeV with total errors of typically 2% over the Delta-resonance and up to 10% at the lowest energies. Deviations from the predictions of the SAID phase shift analysis in the 60 to 80 MeV region are interpreted as evidence for isospin-symmetry breaking in the s-wave amplitudes. The charge dependence of the Delta-resonance properties appears to be smaller than previously reported.
Measured total charge exchange cross sections. The errors are the combined statistical and ststematic errors including normalisation uncertainties.
Total cross sections for the π − p single charge exchange and 20° “partial-total” cross sections have been measured between 126 and 202 MeV pion energy. The former are about 4% below similar results of Bugg et al. and (5–10)% below predictions made with currently accepted phase shifts. The latter agree quite well with calculations.

The differential cross section for the reaction π − p→n π ° has been measured with high statistics at six incident beam momenta between 1.0 and 2.4 GeV/ c . The results are compared with predictions of recent phase shift analyses and forward dispersion relations.

FROM EXTRAPOLATING THE LEGENDRE POLYNOMIAL FITS.
THE LEGENDRE POLYNOMIAL FITS WERE CONSTRAINED IN THE EXTREME BACKWARD DIRECTION BY DATA AT THETA = 180 DEG FROM OTHER EXPERIMENTS.
We have performed an experiment to study the reaction π−+p→η+n near threshold, preliminary to a forthcoming measurement of charge asymmetry in η-meson decay. The η was identified by the velocity of the associated neutron. We detected neutrons produced in the forward hemisphere in the center-of-mass system corresponding to the most energetic neutrons in the laboratory. Data were taken at π− momenta between 670 and 805 MeVc. The four neutron detectors made it possible to detect neutrons at angles of 0° to 21° from the incident pion beam. We present backward differential cross sections for both pion charge exchange and η production calculated from the data. We looked for η′ at pion momenta of 1.5 BeVc and observed none. We obtained σ(π−p→nη′)≤60 μb.
