Cross sections for inclusive π0 production at large transverse momentum pT were measured in π−p, π+p, and pp collisions at 300 GeV/c. The cross-section ratio σ(π−p→π0X)/σ(π+p→π0X) was found to be consistent with unity in the pT region of 1 to 5 GeV/c. The cross-section ratio σ(π+p→π0X)/σ(pp→π0X) however is growing with increasing pT and increasing π0 c.m.-system rapidity in agreement with parton-model expectations, where the partons in the pions have on average higher momenta than in the proton.
THERE IS ALSO A 1 PCT UNCERTAINTY IN THE PT SCALE AND A 7 PCT UNCERTAINTY IN THE NORMALISATION.
We compare high-transverse-momentum (P⊥) inclusive π0 production from π−, K−, p, and p¯ beams, at 100 and 200 GeV/c, for center-of-mass (c.m.) angles ranging from 2° to 115° and P⊥<4.5 GeV/c. The ratio σ(pp→π0X)σ(πp→π0X) decreases with increasing P⊥, and changes dramatically with c.m. angle. Also, the ratios σ(K−p→π0X)σ(π−p→π0X) and σ(p¯p→π0X)σ(pp→π0X) are approximately constant. These measurements are consistent with a theoretical viewpoint in which constituents of the incident hadrons undergo a hard-scattering subprocess.

We present single inclusive π±, π0 andK± spectra in the forward fragmentation region (x>0.2,pT<1.5 GeV/c) as well as correlations between two charged particles. The data were recorded in an unseparated negative hadron beam at the CERN SPS using a large acceptance forward spectrometer. Our maasurements are compared in detail with several models which emphasise the role of the beam valence quarks in this production process. The connection to measurements at largepT is also investigated.

The inclusive cross sections for π0 production by π− and π+ on protons have been measured with a beam momentum of 280 GeV/c using a fine grained electromagnetic calorimeter and the CERN Omega spectrometer. The transverse momentum and FeynmanxF ranges covered are 4.0<pT<7.0 GeV/c and −0.45<xF<0.6 respectively. The data are compared with leading order QCD calculations.

Theπ0 andη0 production is studied inπ−p interactions at 360 GeV/c. The cross section forπ0 production in the forward hemisphere (X>0) isσ(π0)=(49.7 ± 1.0 ± 1.1) mb and for η withX>0.1,Nch>2,σ(η0)=(3.1 ± 0.5) mb. The ratio of theπ0 toη0 cross section forX>0.1,Nch>2 isσ(π0)/σ(η0). Results on FeynmanX andpT distributions are presented. We have measured large-transverse-momentum (p⊥) inclusive π0 production at c.m. angles centered near 90° for π±p and pp interactions at 100 and 200 GeV/c. This is the first such measurement using a pion beam. The ratio σ(pp→π0X)σ(πp→π0X) decreases with increasing p⊥ and is independent of energy when expressed as a function of x⊥=p⊥pmax. We compare the data with predictions of various models.

We have measured the cross section for the reaction π−p→π0+anything at an incident momentum of 5 GeV/c. The two γ rays from π0 decays were detected using a 150-element lead-glass hodoscope array. A comparison is given of the inclusive π0 spectrum from hydrogen (obtained through a subtraction of CH2 and C target data) with π0 production from C and Cu.

Measurements are reported of inclusive production of π0-mesons in the beam fragmentation region in γp, πp andKp collisions. Results include the ratio of π0 production inKp and πp collisions, showing reduced production from fragmentation of theK-meson, and the ratio of π0 production in photon and hadron collisions which shows agreement with modified Vector Meson Dominance at lowPT, and departures at higherPT signalling the onset of direct photon reactions. The pattern of departure from Feynman scaling at highPT points to a contribution of hard parton-parton collisions in both γp and πp collisions.

Charged multiplicity and π 0 cross sections for π − p inelastic interactions at 70 GeV/ c are presented. The data were obtained from an exposure of the BEBC bubble chamber equipped with a track sensitive target (TST) to an unseparated negative beam at the CERN SPS. About 10 000 events were used for the charged multiplicity study, and about 2000 Dalitz pairs for the π 0 production analysis. A total of 12 e + e − pairs with a mass higher than the π 0 mass were found and analysed in terms of η or ω Dalitz pairs or decay pairs of vector mesons. Comparisons with data at other energies are made in terms of charged prong, π 0 cross sections, and of multiplicity parameters. The moments of longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions of the π 0 are determined and compared to the predictions of quark counting rule models.
