The n̄-Fe absorption cross section σ abs n Fe has been measured at LEAR (the Low Energy Antiproton Ring at CERN) using tagged n̄'s produced in the p̄p → n̄n charge-exchange reaction. With incident p̄ momenta of 875 and 545 MeV/ c σ abs n Fe has been measured in the momentum interval between 125 and 780 MeV/ c , in a region where only a few measurements presently exist. The overall statistical and systematic errors range from 20 to 5%; the normalisation error is less than 3%. The measured cross sections are well reproduced by a parametrisation a + b p n , with a = 0.680 ± 0.051 barn and b = 0.228 ± 0.024 barn·GeV/ c .

Inspire Record 1389771 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.36531

The differential cross sections for the n+d elastic scattering and for the 2H(n,np)n break-up reaction in the np quasi-free scattering configuration was measured at 67 MeV. The experimental data are compared with results of the calculations based on a rigorous solution of the three-nucleon Faddeev equations using meson-exchange potentials. Good agreement is found between experiment and theory for the n+d elastic-scattering cross section while in the case of np quasi-free scattering the theoretical predictions overestimate the data at neutron angles larger than 40° by about 30%.

Pion - deuteron elastic scattering at large angles from 0.90-GeV/c to 2.025-GeV/c

The differential cross section for the backward (120° ⩽ θ c.m.s. ⩽ 180°) pion-deuteron elastic scattering was measured at eight incident pion momenta from 0.90 to 2.025 GeV/ c . A distinctive change in the shape of the angular distribution is observed. At 0.9 GeV/ c the differential cross section decreases smoothly to 180° in accordance with predictions of multiple-scattering theory. At 1.31 GeV/ c , i.e. in the region of the hypothetical 1 I 6 dibaryon with a mass of 2.9 GeV, the differential cross section is practically independent of angle. At higher energies a sharp backward peak is clearly seen. Connections of our results with dibaryons and Regge asymptotic behaviour are discussed.

We present a total of 273 independent data points of the analyzing powers A oono (nP) and A ooon (nP) in a large angular interval at four energies between 0.477 and 0.940 GeV. The SATURNE II polarized beam of free neutrons obtained from the break-up of polarized deuterons was scattered on the polarized Saclay frozen-spin proton target. Part of the data was obtained with a CH 2 target. A comparison of the two measured observables allows one to determine the polarization of the neutron beam. The present results provide an important contribution to any future theoretical or phenomenological analysis.

Differential and total cross sections for π + absorption on 12 C are presented at incident pion energies of 100 and 165 MeV. This is the first time that this reaction has been measured with a combination of good energy and angle information over an extensive region of phase space. Results are compared to extensive Monte Carlo simulations in order to investigate the role of two- and multinucleon absorption processes in this nucleus. Signatures of ISI and FSI in the pion absorption process are also investigated, in order to explain the complex reaction mechanism implied by the data.

The vector analyzing power Ay for the reaction Full-size image (<1 K) has been measured at five angles between 60° and 140° in the lab at an incident neutron energy of 67.7 MeV. The measurement is of a presision never before acheived (ΔAy ⩽ 0.01, statistical) for this observable. This precision makes possible a quantitative comparison with meson-exchange theories, thus enhancing our understanding of the role of non-nucleonic degrees of freedom.

Double-differential cross sections for photons above 20 MeV were measured for the 3He+(d, C, Cu and Au) reactions at 284 MeV. The comparison of their energy spectra shows that the high-energy gamma rays are produced by the same mechanism in the very light 3He + d system and in heavier ones like 3He + (C, Cu and Au) or Xe + Sn, previously studied by the MSU group. A calculation of the 3He+(C and Au) systems at 90° in the laboratory was performed, assuming that photons are produced in first-chance nucleon-nucleon collisions and for a realistic momentum distribution of the nucleons in the 3He projectile. The results are in good agreement with the experimental data which suggests that secondary collisions are not important in the production of photons above 50 MeV for nucleus-nucleus reactions at 90 MeV/nucleon.

This provides additional support for the hypotheses of limiting target fragmentation and factorization.

We have measured the formation cross sections and the recoil properties of the products from the interaction of 240 MeV 12C with natural Ag targets. From the data, we have constructed charge- and mass-distribution curves. With the measured recoil range and forward-to-backward ratios, we deduced the formation mechanisms, and found that the yields in the mass range between A = 40 and A = 70, with a total cross section of 6 ± 1 mb, were mainly formed by the fission process. The yields between A = 70 and A = 130, with a total cross section of 2300 ± 200 mb, were formed by direct reactions in which the target-like transfer reaction products contributed 1000 ± 100 mb and spallation reactions contributed 1306 ± 200 mb.

A fresh analysis is reported of high statistics Crystal Barrel data on p p → 3π 0 , ηηπ 0 , ηπ 0 π 0 and ηη ′ π 0 at rest. This analysis is made fully consistent with CERN-Munich data on π + π − → π + π − up to a mass of 1900 MeV, with GAMS data on π + π − → π 0 π 0 , and with BNL and ANL data on π + π − → K K , which are fitted simultaneously. There is evidence for an I = 0, J PC = 2 ++ resonance with weak (≤ 7%) coupling to ππ, strong coupling to both ϱϱ and ωω and pole position 1534 - i90 MeV. This resonance agrees qualitatively with GAMS and VES data on ππ → ωω, previously interpreted in terms of a resonance at 1590–1640 MeV. New masses and widths for (A) ƒ 0 (1370) and (B) ƒ 0 (1500) , fitted to all eight data sets, are M A = 1300 ± 15 Mev, Γ A = 230 ± 15 MeV, M B = 1500 ± 8 MeV, Γ B = 132 ± 15 MeV. Branching ratios to ππ and ηη are given, and differ significantly from earlier determinations because of a new procedure.

We have measured angular distributions of differential cross sections and analyzing powers ( A y ) of the reaction p p → d π + at six incident proton energies between 1.3 and 2.4 GeV. They confirm the rapid variations at √ s = 2.65 GeV suggested by earlier experiments. Deviations from a monotonic behavior are also found in the excitation functions of the differential cross section at t = 0 or where Θ π + (c.m.) = 0°. Structures clearly appear at √ s = 2.4 and 2.65 GeV, in some coefficients of the associated Legendre function expansions of A y .

Cross sections for inelastic scattering of 635 and 715 MeV/ c K + from 12 C are compared with DWIA calculations in order to check for possible density-dependent effects on K + -nucleon cross sections within nuclei. New fits to 715 MeV/ c K + scattering spectra from 6 Li give elastic and inelastic cross sections and permit an evaluation of the density dependence of these effects. The same DWIA methods are also used to estimate quadrupole non-central contributions to elastic K + scattering from the 1 + ground state of 6 Li, and these are found to be very small.

Light-particle emission from Au+Au collisions has been studied in the bombarding-energy range 100-250 A·MeV, using DeltaE- ER telescopes in coincidence with the FOPI detector in its phase I configuration. Center-of-mass energy spectra have been measured for Z = 1,2 isotopes emitted in central collisions at CM polar angles between 60° and 90°. Evidence for a collective expansion is reported, on the basis of the mean kinetic energies of hydrogen isotopes. Comparison is presented with statistical calculations (WIX code). For CM kinetic energy spectra, fair agreement is found between data and a recently developed transport model.

Total interaction cross sections have been measured for 8 Li on C and Pb targets, for 9 Li on C, Al, Cu, Sn and Pb targets, as well as for 11 Li on C, Sn and Pb targets at about 80 MeV/nucleon. In addition, 2n-removal cross sections for 11 Li have been extracted. These measurements are used to determine the nuclear and the electromagnetic part of the cross sections for the different projectile-target combinations. The experimental results are compared to different model calculations. These comparisons allow one to draw conclusions on the matter density distribution of the neutron-rich lithium isotope 11 Li. By comparing our data on the electromagnetic dissociation of 11 Li with all the other data available in the literature, we are able to put constraints on the dipole-strength distribution in 11 Li.

Exclusive and restricted-inclusive reactions involving the $^{11}$Be one-neutron halo

Reactions of a 41 MeV/u beam of the radioactive halo nucleus 11Be have been studied with a counter telescope coupled to an array of neutron detectors covering angles up to 97°. The technique allows to determine single-neutron inclusive and exclusive angular distributions. The targets (Be, Ti and Au) were chosen to illustrate the relative roles played by nuclear and Coulomb mechanisms. The channels leading to 10Be, the dissociation channels, correspond to impact parameters larger than the sum of the radii of the target and the 10Be core. It is shown that for the dissociation process it is possible to account almost quantitatively for the integral, single- and double-differential cross sections from models without free parameters including the Coulomb, Serber and Glauber (diffraction-dissociation) mechanisms. The neutron distributions from the nondissociative reaction channels show little individuality and it is convenient to group them together as the channel “neutron plus anything different from 10Be”. We refer to these as “restricted-inclusive” reactions. These seem to be a promising tool for obtaining accurate information on the halo wave function in momentum coordinates.

This paper presents and contrasts features of the inelastic nuclear reactions of 200 GeV/nucleon 16 O and 32 S ions with emulsion nuclei. Both the multiplicities of shower particles and the extent of target fragmentation have been studied for varying degress of disruption of the projectile nuclei. The results may be interpreted within a simple geometrical model. In particular the rapidity distributions of those events which exhibit complete projectile break-up without any overt sign of low-energy target fragmentation have been determined. The interaction of secondary projectile fragments of charge two or more issuing from oxygen interactions were also studied and the mean free paths in emulsion of the primary 16 O and 32 S ions and all such fragments have been compared to those predicted by a simple Glauber model.

The reaction p + d → π − + X has been studied at Saturne at 1.45, 2.10 and 2.70 GeV, using the spectrometer SPES III. The analysing power and the differential cross sections show no evidence for narrow structures which could be interpreted as a resonance in the three baryon system. At the lowest incident energy, the shapes of the experimental cross sections are well reproduced by phase-space distributions.

We report the results from measurements of proton polarization P , in the γ +D→p+n reaction at photon energies ranging from 200 to 350 MeV. The data obtained are compared with the measured analysing power A , of the reverse reaction and with model calculations. The assumption of the dominant contribution of isobar configurations in this region is on the whole confirmed by the present proton polarization measurements.

Particle correlations of the central collision events of 32 S + Pb at 200 GeV/AMU have been studied by utilizing a Magnetic-Interferometric-Emulsion-Chamber (MAGIC) detector. Particle angles, momentum, and charge-signs are measured for all produced charged tracks for each event. Two-particle correlation functions, C 2 = dN (¦ p 1 − p 2 ¦= q )/ dp 1 dp 2 , for (++), (−−) and (+-) particles are examined. A source radius around 4 – 6 fm is observed for overall identical particle correlations, while unexpected short-range correlations of unlike-sign pairs are observed in the high rapidity region. An analysis of unlike-sign pairs in terms of resonance decays indicated that a large amount (40% relative to pions) of η or ω mesons (decaying into 3 π), or of scalar iso-scalar σ mesons (decaying into 2π) would be required to explain some of the data. Multi-particle charge-sign clusters are recognized; however, their “run-test” and “conjugate-test” show small deviations from statistical fluctuations.

Double differential cross sections for the photon induced emission of π − , π + and protons from Be, C, O, Ti, and Pb have been measured in the photon energy range k = 220–450 MeV using the tagged photon beam of the Bonn 500 MeV synchrotron. The hadron detector consists of a magnetic spectrometer and a large acceptance scintillation counter array. For Be, the single-arm energy distributions show clear structures from quasi-free pion production and quasi-deuteron photodisintegration. These structures disappear with increasing target size. The dependence of the differential cross section on the nuclear size S at Θ lab = 52° can be described by the power law d σ/ d Ω ∞ S α , where S is the number of protons or neutrons, respectively. The exponent is α π ≈ 0.6 for π − and π + and α p ≈ 1.15 for protons. Data for pn, pp, and pπ coincidences are presented. The results are compared to intranuclear cascade codes (PICA and PIKI) and to microscopic calculations.

Integral cross sections for the elastic scattering of π + by protons into angles greater than 20° or 30° (lab) have been measured by the beam-attenuation technique over the energy range of 45–126MeV. The measurements are aimed at providing independent checks on the absolute normalization of differential cross sections, where discrepancies exist between different data sets. Comparisons with predictions made with existing phase shifts show very good agreement with the dispersion-relation constrained phase shifts of the Karlsruhe group.

The PS185 experiment at the CERN Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) has studied the reaction p ̄ p → \ ̄ gLΛ at several momenta. In this paper results from two runs with high statistics at 1.546 GeV/ c and 1.695 GeV/ c are described. Based on 4063 and 11362 analysed events, respectively, differential and integrated cross sections, polarizations and spin correlations are presented. The singlet fraction, extracted from the spin correlations, is consistent with zero at both momenta, showing that the \ ̄ gLΛ pairs are produced in a pure triplet state. A comparison of the decay asymmetry parameters of Λ and \ ̄ gL reduces the upper limits for the violation of the CP invariance for this system.

Complex fragments with 4 ⩽ Z ≲ 50 have been detected in the reactions of 139 La + 12 C and 27 Al at E / A = 14.7 and 18.0 MeV. From the measured angular distributions, the cross sections for the isotropic, target-like and projectile-like components were extracted. The roles of deep-inelastic, fast-fission, and incomplete fusion processes, and the statistical, compound nucleus emission of complex fragments are discussed.

The pion induced pion production (π, 2π) reaction on deuterium has been studied at an incident pion energy of 280 MeV. The outgoing pions were detected in coincidence and the measured four-fold cross sections were compared with a πN → ππ N microscopic model, and, upon integration, with the available experimental total cross sections from the same reaction on H and 2 H. Finally, the results were directly compared with recent data from the 16 O(π + , π + π − ) reaction at the same incident energy.

The double-differential cross sections for high-energy γ-rays were measured for collisions of 36Ar on C, Al, Cu, Ag, Tb, and Au at 85 MeV/nucleon. The system 36Ar+ 27Al has been studied in more detail in an exclusive experiment where the charged-particle multiplicity was measured in coincidence with high-energy γ-rays. A clear correlation between the hardness of the γ-spectra and the overlap distance of the two ions is observed. This correlation is interpreted as due to the spatial dependence of the Fermi momentum of the nucleons.

CHARGE NUMBER DEPENDENCE OF PI+ PRODUCTION FROM NUCLEI BY 200-MEV ELECTRON

Nucl.Phys.A 486 (1988) 512-525, 1988.

Photopion energy distributions have been measured on 7 Li , 28 Si , 51 V and 93 Nb at θ π = 90° with 200 MeV electron. The logarithmic plot of the distributions shows a break at around 10 MeV of the residual energy. This is not explained by the quasi-free π + production. The (e, π + ) cross sections at θ π = 90° deduced by integrating the energy distribution. The result can be approximated by σ 0 Z 2 3 , where σ 0 is 0.13 times the elementary cross section of H(e, π + ) at θ π = 90°. The quasi-free π + production calculated by the Fermi-gas model with Pauli exclusion principle approximately reproduces the relative dependence on the charge number but its absolute value is about ten times as large as the experimental result. The present result for the charged photopion cross section in the threshold region is in contrast to the case in the Δ-resonance region where the cross section of π + + π − photoproduction is expressed by A 2 3 times the elementary cross sections.

The results of tagged photon measurements of the 16O(γ, pn) and 16O(γ, pp) reactions, carried out with photons of energies of 80–131 MeV, are presented. Missing energy spectra for both reactions, with an energy resolution of 7 MeV have been obtained. The 16O(γ, pn) missing energy spectrum is very similar to that recently measured for the 12C(γ, pN) reaction. In both cases the recoil momentum distributions are quantitavely described by a quasideuteron mechanism. Using normalisation factors based on this mechanism the average cross section for the 16O(γ, pn) reaction, for nucleons ejected from the 1p shell, is 510 ± 95 μb. The corresponding cross section for the 16O(γ, pp) reaction is 10.0 ± 3.0 μb.

A 32-phoswich detector array has been used in conjunction with two Si-telescopes to detect, in coincidence, light and projectile-like fragments produced in the reaction 14N + 197Au at 560 MeV. Inclusive and semi-exclusive cross sections are given. Angular correlations and invariant cross-section velocity distributions of light particles in coincidence with projectile-like fragments are used to deduce the dominant reaction mechanisms. The transfer of nucleons to the target and sequential breakup of the quasi-projectile with or without pickup of target nucleons are clearly seen. Some evidence is found for a prompt breakup of the projectile into 10B + α followed by a dissipative interaction of the heavy fragment with the target.

Angular, multiplicity and velocity distributions as well as azimuthai asymmetries of light fragments (Z = 1 and 2) correlated with large transverse momentum protons detected at 90° have been measured in 16O + 27Al collisions at 94 MeV/u. Data are compared with a model based on the standard high-energy fireball geometry coupled with the Weisskopf theory of evaporation. Reasonable agreement is achieved with the exception of some discrepancies which could arise either from the absence of specific intermediate-energy corrections or from a non-statistical process.

Neutron Induced Pion Production on Carbon, Copper and Bismuth at Intermediate-energies

Inclusive production cross sections of charged pions on carbon, copper and bismuth by neutrons in the energy range of 300–580 MeV have been measured from 54° to 164°. The invariant cross sections can be expressed by Full-size image (<1 K) for the high-energy part of the pion spectra. The slope parameter exhibits a systematic variation with neutron energy and emission angle for the three targets. The dependence of the pion production on the target mass number varies strongly with pion energy and emission angle. The production cross sections are compared with the model of quasi-two-body scaling, the moving-source model and with intranuclear cascade calculations.

The differential cross sections of π − and π + meson production at a laboratory angle of 159° in collisions of 15–65 GeV protons with Be, C, Al, Ti, Mo and W targets are measured. The data are presented in the tables for Lorentz-invariant cross sections over the momentum range of pions from 0.25 to 0.95 GeV/ c . The slopes (“temperatures”) of a cumulative part of the pion spectra (the pion kinetic energy is >0.35 GeV) increase by 15–20% with changing A from 9 up to 184. Some discrepancy in the E -dependence of the temperature of the cumulative pion spectra is observed in the high-energy region studied, namely the temperature at 15–65 GeV, taking its slow rise over this range into account, contradicts that at 400 GeV.

Emission of light fragments at small angles is studied in relativistic heavy ion collisions using the Diogene plastic wall for both symmetrical and non-symmetrical target-projectile systems with 400 MeV per nucleon and 800 MeV per nucleon incident neon nuclei. Efficiency of multiplicity measurements in the small angle range for the selection of central or peripheral collisions is confirmed for asymmetric systems. Differential production cross sections of Z = 1 fragments show evidence for the existence of two emitting sources. The apparent temperature of each source is obtained from comparison with a thermodynamical model.

Hadron production in nucleon-nucleon collisions at 200-GeV/c: A Compilation

Data on stable hadron production in p + p and p + n interactions at 200 GeV/ c are reviewed. Methods to construct missing data in the p + p, p + n, and n + n interactions are derived from charge symmetry and charge, baryon and strangeness conservation, and used to yield nucleon-nucleon interaction results. These may be useful for evaluating nucleus-nucleus collision measurements in terms of enhancements and suppressions. Parameterizations of p t 2 and rapidity distributions are presented to provide yields in acceptance cuts for comparisons to nucleus-nucleus data. As an example the derived nucleon-nucleon multiplicities are reduced to the acceptances of the NA-35 CERN S + S experiment.

New data are reported on antiproton annihilations at rest with production of Λ and K s 0 , using a streamer chamber with 3 He, 4 He and 20 Ne as gas targets. The data include Λ, K s 0 , ΛK s 0 and K s 0 K S 0 production rates and momentum distributions, π − momentum spectra, mean numbers of charged particles generally and of negatively charged particles separately for different reaction channels. The yields are compared to simple combinatorial calculations based on the extreme assumptions of Λ production via B = 1 or via B = 0 ( K ̄ rescattering) annihilations. Λ and K s 0 momentum spectra are compared to simple model calculations where B = 0 and B = 1 annihilations with and without final-state interactions are considered.
