Cross sections for resonance production in the reactions π ± p → p π ± π + π − at 16 GeV/ c are determined by a maximum likelihood fit, making use of the measurements of all individual events. The reactions are described by a simple parametrization based on an incoherent superposition of amplitudes for quasi two-body and quasi three-body processes and a non-resonant backgroud. In this way the reflections are accounted for in a consistent way. Thus cross sections are obtained for Δ ++ , Δ 0 , ρ 0 and f 0 production which do not suffer from the uncertainties of background subtraction typical of the usual technique of fitting individual mass distributions.

At the Bonn 2.5 GeV synchrotron the polarization of the Λ 0 was measured at 40° and 90° for three energies. The kaon was detected with a strong focussing magnetic spectrometer and separated from other particles with the help of a differential liquid Čerenkov counter. The polarization was determined by means of the angular distribution of the decay proton which was measured with a combination of sonic spark chambers and a scintillation counter hodoscope. The typical statistical errors are about 13%. The systematic errors add up to 8%.

We have investigated the ρ-meson production mechanism in the three reactions π±p→ρ±p and π−p→ρ0n at 3.9 GeV/c (s=8.2 GeV2) using the prism-plot technique. Differential cross sections at all momentum transfers are presented. A significant backward peak has been found in all three reactions. The differential cross sections for these backward peaks are given and are compared with the equivalent pion elastic and charge-exchange cross sections in the backward direction. Using a linear combination of the three differential cross sections we have isolated the I=0 exchange contribution in the forward direction. This differential cross section has a zero at −t=0.45 (GeV/c)2 and is fitted by the dual absorptive model of Harari with an interaction radius of ∼ 1.2 F. The total I=0 cross section is calculated and compared with similarly determined cross sections at higher momenta. An analysis of the properties of the other possible spin-parity exchanges is also presented.

The production of η and X° mesons has been investigated in four and six prong events from π + p interactions at 5.45 GeV/ c . The cross sections for the quasi two body states Δ ++ η and Δ ++ X° were found to be 0.076±0.013 mb and 0.017±0.006 mb respectively. A comparison of the matrix elements for these reactions yields an η−X° mixing angle different from that predicted by the quadratic mass formula by about 20°, but within 6° of the linear mass formula result.

A recent spin-parity analysis of the π + π + π − system formed opposite a proton and a coherent deuteron by incident 13 GeV/ c 2 π + mesons, is extended to a three-pion mass of 1.9 GeV/ c . Relative proportions of the contributing partial waves are presented, from threshold, and the A 3 region is discussed in detail. Contrary to results with the (3 π ) − system, a change in phase is noted for the 2 − amplitude decaying to f 0 π + via am S-wave.

The production of the peripheral 3 π mass enhancement in the A 1 region is described. The differential cross section and its variation with 3 π mass is studied and the spin density matrix elements are given for the t -channel and s -channel helicity frames. As observed in π − p interactions t channel but not s channel helicity is conserved. A Deck type double Regge trajectory exchange amplitude gives good fits to the experimental distributions. Its use is supported by the equality of ϱ 0 0 for the A 1 and ϱ 00 for the ϱ in the t -channel, as noted by Donohue.

Results are presented of a study of the reaction π+p→ρ+p at 2.67 GeV/c incident π+ momentum. The contributions due to given spin-parity exchanges are isolated; and, by combining these results with those of a similar π− experiment, the It=0 component of each series is separated. The ω (I=0, JPG=1−−) exchange contribution shows a pronounced dip at −t=0.4 (GeV/c)2. Evidence is presented for the exchange of a state of minimum quantum numbers, H (I=0, JPG=1+−).

We report measurements of the electroproduction of single charged pions from hydrogen and deuterium targets for values of ε in the range 0.35<ε<0.45. Data were taken with a hydrogen target at the (W, Q2) points (2.15 GeV, 1.2 GeV2), (2.65, 2.0), (2.65, 3.4), (2.65, 6.0), and (2.65, 10.0). Data were taken with a deuterium target at the (W, Q2) points (2.15, 1.2) and (2.65, 2.0). The transverse cross section obtained by using these data in conjunction with earlier data at high ε to separate the longitudinal and transverse components is used in conjunction with the new data and the t-channel Born term to determine the pion form factor and to re-evaluate previously reported measurements. In the range 0.15 GeV2<Q2<10.0 GeV2 the pion form factor can be described by the simple pole form [1+Q2(0.462±0.024)]−1.

A set of parameters describing the K + n elastic scattering has been obtained from a simulataneous fit, based on the Glauber model. to the three experimental differential cross sections and to the K + d total cross section, giving α n = 1.7 ± 0.5 GeV −2 for the slope α n of the differential cross section, and ρ n = −0.16 ± 0.3 for the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the forward scattering amplitude. The D-wave function of the deuteron has been found to give a non-negligible contribution to the coherent reaction.

Measurements are presented of the cross sections for omega meson photoproduction at a mean energy of 3.9 GeV from nuclear targets of D, Be, C, Al, Cu, Ag, Au. An optical and Glauber model analysis of the coherent cross sections has been performed to obtain the ω-nucleon cross section, σ ωN , and the photon-omega coupling constant γ ω 2 /4 π . Our results are summarised in table 4. We find good agreement with the quark model prediction that σ ω N = σ ϱ N , and with the value of γ ω 2 /4 π determined from the storage ring experiments and from an earlier complex nuclei measurement. However, we disagree with more recent complex nuclei measurements which found a high value of γ ω 2 /4 π .

We present the first results of an experiment at the CERN intersecting storage rings, which measures the total cross-section in proton-proton collisions. The equivalent laboratory momenta are 291, 496, 1068 and 1480 GeV/c. We have made a direct measurement of αT as the ratio between the total interaction rate and the machine luminosity. The present paper gives a detailed description of the experimental apparatus and of the analysis procedure. We find that αT increases by about 10% in the energy region studied.

The reaction\(\bar pp \to \bar \Lambda \Lambda \) has been studied in a bubble chamber experiment at eight incident momenta between 1.50 and 2.06 GeV/c. The differential cross-section, the polarization and the spin correlation coefficients have been measured. We present differential cross-sections for pp elastic scattering at eight laboratory momenta from 1.50 to 2.06 GeV/c. The data are analysed using an 8-parameter optical modelà la Frahn and Venter. However, the best representation of the differential cross-sections is obtained by combining the glory model with a parametrization of the scattering amplitude in terms of coherent exponentials. Both representations show the dominance of the partial wave with orbital angular momentum equal to four.

Data are presented on the polarization parameter in pp and pn elastic scattering at 11.8 GeV/c for four-momentum transfers −t=0.15 to 0.9 GeV2. In contrast to lower energies where the pn polarization is positive, it is slightly negative at 11.8 GeV/c; averaging the data from −t=0.18 to 0.5 GeV2 we find P(pn)=(−0.9±0.5)%, to be compared with P(pp)=(5.6±0.8)%. These data, combined with our previous data at lower energies, show that the I=0 single-flip exchange amplitude has an anomalously rapid energy dependence.

We present results of measurements of the n−p total cross section between 30 and 280 GeV/c. The measurements were carried out with a neutron beam by using the standard transmission technique and a liquid-hydrogen target. A total-absorption calorimeter was used to determine the neutron energy. Our measurements, which have an accuracy of ∼1%, indicate a smooth rise of approximately 1.5 mb between 50 and 280 GeV/c. The combined n−p and p−p data above 20 GeV/c are well fitted by the expression σ=38.4+0.85|ln(s95)|1.47 mb.

|Tz|=32Δ(1238) systems are studied from the standpoint of direct production utilizing experimental data on the reactions pp→pπ+n, pp→pπ+π−p, pp→pπ+π−π0p, and pp→pπ+π−π+n. Resonance-production total and differential cross sections are presented, in addition to the decay density-matrix elements. It is demonstrated that the experimentally defined Δ(1238) systems are not characterized solely by spin-parity 32+, and that corresponding elements of the density matrices of both pπ+ and π−n cases generally behave in a similar manner with increasing c.m. angle. Additional detailed studies of the t-channel moments are presented for peripherally produced πN systems as a function of both c.m. angle and πN invariant mass. Dynamical differences are observed between the pπ+ and nπ− moments for the very peripheral data. One-pion-exchange-model predictions are compared with the peripheral pπ+ moments and with several invariant-mass distributions from the pp→pπ+π−p data. Complications arising from the presence of two pπ+ combinations in the four- and five-body final-state data are discussed.

Results are presented on effective-mass distributions, differentisl cross sections and longitudinal c.m. momentum distributions for the channels K − p → K − p π o , K o p π − and K − π + n , obtained from a sample of approximately 28 000 inelastic two-pronged interactions at 4.2 GeV/ c incident momentum. The K π − system produced in the reaction K p → K 0 π − p at 4.2 GeV/ c is studied using high-statistics bubble-chamber data. The spin-parity structure is analysed as a function of the K 0 π − mass up to 1.52 GeV. Production of K ∗ (890) and K ∗ (1420) is observed in helicity-0 and helicity-1 states. Contributions of natural and unnatural parity exchange are present. Considerable S-wave production is observed over the whole mass region considered. We also study the t ′ dependence of the K ∗ (890) and K ∗ (1420) amplitudes. A comparison of our results on K ∗ (890) production with the results of an analysis of charge-exchange K ∗ (890) production, allows the separation of I = 0 and I = 1 exchange amplitudes. We present results of complete measurements of the two-prong events observed in a 50 000-picture exposure of the 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber to a 205−GeVc proton beam at the National Accelerator Laboratory. Using kinematic fitting, elastic and inelastic events are separated and cross sections are obtained. The total two-prong cross section is measured to be 9.77 ± 0.40 mb, of which 2.85 ± 0.26 mb represents the inelastic contribution. The total elastic cross section is measured to be 6.92 ± 0.44 mb. Our data are consistent with the break in dσdt at |t|∼0.1−0.2 (GeVc)2 observed at the CERN ISR. A prominent low-mass enhancement is observed in the distribution of missing mass squared from the slow proton for the inelastic events. An analysis based on the missing-mass spectrum and the particle rapidities shows that this low-mass enhancement accounts for about 77% of the total inelastic two-prong cross section. The diffractive cross section in the two-prong events is 2.20 ± 0.25 mb, in agreement with certain two-component models.

Differential cross sections for elastic K + p scattering have been measured at nineteen momenta between 0.7 and 1.9 GeV/ c . The data represent between 10 thousand and 20 thousand elastic events at each momentum and cover a wide range of scattering angles ( −0.98 ≲ cos θ ∗ ≲ 0.95 ). A computer controlled system of scintillation counters and acoustic spark chambers was used to detect the elastic events. Various internal consistency checks indicate that the absolute normalization of the data is accurate to within 2–3%. The cross sections show a smooth transition from an isotropic angular distribution to a dominant forward peak over the range covered by the experiment. Phase-shift analyses including these results show little evidence for a direct-channel resonance, and fitting the results by t - and u -channel exchange processes alone gives a good fit.
