The cross section for the reaction p¯N→μ+μ−X with muon pairs in the mass range 4<M<9 GeV/c2 and xF>0 was measured to be σ=0.104±0.005±0.008 nb/nucleon. The distributions dσdxF and M3dσdM were compared to the QCD-improved Drell-Yan model and to calculations including first-order QCD corrections, with use of deep-inelastic structure functions. Excellent agreement with the data was obtained if the calculations were multiplied by factors of 2.45 and 1.41, respectively.

We have measured the antiproton-proton elastic differential cross section in the center-of-mass angular range cosθ=−0.985 to +0.40 at six momenta between 1.6 and 2.2 GeV/c in a bubble-chamber experiment. We use the data to look for evidence of direct-channel boson resonances.

We report on measurements of charged pion production cross sections at θ ≅ 50°, p T ≅ 3–9 GeV / c and √ s = 45 GeV , taken with the Split Field Magnet Detector at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). Together with previous data at √ s = 62 GeV , this allows the calculation of the exponent n assuming a power law dependence p n T . Values of n ≈ 8 are found at low x T = 2 p T /√ s which drop to about 7 at x T ≈ 0.3. The measured values of π + /π − rise with x T and approach ≈ 2 at x T ≈ 0.3. A first-order QCD calculations is reasonably consistent with the data.

High $p_T K^\pm / \pi^\pm$ Production in $p p$ Collisions at the {ISR}: Strangeness Suppression and Gluon Effects

The ratios of high p T charged kaon to pion production cross sections at √ s = 45 and 62 GeV are presented. The values of the K ± π ± ratios are essentially independent of both √ s and x T = 2p T √s and are compatible with a strangeness suppression factor λ = 0.55. By contrast, the K − π − values fall with x T suggesting a gluonic origin of K − . QCD calculations agrees with the measurements.

Correlations Associated with Particles Produced at Small Angles in p p Collisions at the CERN ISR

Inspire Record 2886 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.36078

Data on correlations between momentum analysed protons, pions or K mesons, and charged particles produced in pp collisions at the CERN ISR are presented. The charged particles were detected in a ∼4 π scintillation counter hodoscope. The pseudo-rapidity distributions are well described by production within the limits of cylindrical phase space, with negative kaons and antiprotons yielding narrower distributions than protons, pions and positive kaons. The azimuthal distributions show symmetry around the t -channel axis in the rest frame of the recoiling mass M x in pp → aX (a = detected proton, pion, positive kaon).

Polarization in pi--p Scattering between 500 and 940 Mev

Inspire Record 944982 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.26812

A graphite-plate spark chamber has been used to analyze the polarization of protons recoiling from π−−p scattering. The observations were made at 90° (c.m. system) pion scattering angle for seven incident pion energies between 500 and 940 Mev, at 120° or 135° for five energies in this interval, and also at 75° for 500 Mev only. The results are compared with predictions of several models used to explain the maxima in the π−−p scattering cross section. Qualitative arguments show that the energy intervals between these maxima are not completely dominated by neighboring single-state resonances. Phase shifts found to be large in scattering also seem to be large in polarization.

Inclusive $\pi^0$ Electroproduction in the Deep Inelastic Region

Phys.Lett.B 90 (1980) 479-484, 1980.
Inspire Record 143042 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.27245

Using 20.5 GeV electrons on protons, we measured inclusive π 0 's (of transverse momentum, p T , from 0 to 1.4 GeV/ c ) produced by virtual photons of energy, ν, from 4 to 16.5 GeV and four-momentum squared, q 2 , from −1.8 to −8.5 (GeV/ c ) 2 . Comparing with charged pion data, we find σ π 0 = 1 2 (σ π + + σ π − ) , supporting the quark model. Photon knockout of a quark is favored as the interpretation of these data because of scaling in z = E π / ν and similarity in z -dependence of other pion production data. Consistent with this interpretation are the dependence of 〈 p T 〉 on q 2 , the azimuthal dependence, and fits to the constituent interchange model. We also observe a possible p T −4 dependence at large | q 2 | over a limited p T range.

A Search for Direct Photon Production in 200 GeV/c and 300 GeV/c Proton - Beryllium Interactions

Baltrusaitis, R.M. ; Binkley, Morris E. ; Cox, B. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 88 (1979) 372-378, 1979.
Inspire Record 142314 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.27292

A search has been made for direct photon production in pBe interactions at 200 and 300 GeV/ c over the kinematic region 1.5 < P ⊥ < 4.0 GeV/ c and −0.7 < X F < 0 (90° < θ cms < 160°). An excess of single photons above that which is predicted from the measured π 0 and η 0 production is observed. Theratio of γ / π 0 production is calculated assuming that the excess arises from direct photon production. We find that this ratio averages 0.070 ± 0.025 (including systematic errors) in this region of X F and P ⊥ for our 200 and 300 GeV/ c data. We have used our measured value of the η / π 0 ratio of 0.47 ± 0.10 in the determination of the γ / π 0 ratio. The variation of γ / π 0 with X F , P ⊥ , X R and θ cms presented.

Inclusive $\Delta^{++}$ and $\Lambda$ Production in Proton Proton Interactions at {ISR} Energies

Inclusive cross sections forΔ++ production inpp interactions at different ISR energies are presented. The differential cross sectiondσ/dx forΔ++ production is found to be approximately independent of Feynmanx. No strong energy dependence is seen over the ISR energy range. The topological cross sections ofΔ++ at\(\sqrt s= 62\) GeV show an appreciable contribution from non-diffractive production mechanisms. An upper limit for theΔ0 production cross section is determined.

ASSOCIATED pi0 PRODUCTION IN EVENTS WITH A PARTICLE OF HIGH TRANSVERSE MOMENTUM AT S**(1/2) = 63-GeV

Z.Phys.C 24 (1984) 31, 1984.
Inspire Record 199391 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.16215

Events with a single highpT charged particle were recorded with the Split-Field-Magnet Detector in proton-proton collisions at the CERN-ISR. In the jet opposite to the trigger region the densities of photons and reconstructed neutral pions were measured with a liquid argon shower counter. Scaled momentum distributions of these particles are given and compared with those of charged pions. The spectra of charged and neutral pions coincide. The production cross-section of neutrals in the away jet shows no dependence on the flavour of the trigger particle.
