The charmonium χ states are observed in both π− and p Be interactions near 200 GeV/c via their radiative decay into J/ψ. The χ(3510) and χ(3555) are produced with roughly equal cross sections in π− collisions while the χ(3555) dominates in p collisions. Simple gluon fusion can account for χ production with incident protons but additional mechanisms are needed for incident π−.

The photoproduction of neutral pions from hydrogen has been studied by counting the recoil protons with a magnetic spectrometer and scintillation counters. The process has been studied between photon energies of 260 and 450 Mev and between center-of-momentum pion angles of 70° and 153°. The excitation functions show a resonance type shape with maxima at about 320 Mev. Angular distributions are analyzed in the form A+Bcosθ+Ccos2θ in the center-of-momentum system. The coefficient B, which gives the front-back asymmetry, is small at all energies; and the ratio −AC is 1.22±0.10 at all energies between 295 and 450 Mev. The maximum cross section at 90° in the c.m. system is 26×10−30 cm2/steradian for 320-Mev photons. The total cross section divided by the square of the c.m. photon wavelength has a maximum near 340 Mev, and drops by nearly a factor of two at 450 Mev. These results are consistent with magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole absorption leading to a resonant state of the pion-nucleon system of angular momentum 32 and isotopic spin 32.

This paper reports measurements of the differential cross section for photoproduction of neutral pions in hydrogen at energies 300, 400, and 450 Mev, at center-of-momentum angles of 70° to 150°. One decay photon from the neutral pion is observed in coincidence with the recoil proton, whose energy and angle are measured to define the photon energy. The results obtained by this method are in good agreement with more accurate measurements obtained recently by the method of observing only the recoil proton.

Positive pions produced in a cold, high-pressure hydrogen gas target by the 500-Mev bremsstrahlung of the CalTech synchrotron, have been analyzed by a large magnetic spectrometer. The photoproduction cross section has been measured as a function of photon energy at laboratory angles of 12.5°, 30°, 51°, 73°, 104°, 140°, and 180°. The energy region covered depends somewhat on the angle, but is typically from 200 to 470 Mev. From these excitation curves the angular distribution of the photopions in the center of momentum system is obtained for various photon energies, and these angular distributions are analyzed in the form A+Bcosθ+Ccos2θ. The angular distribution has a backward maximum at low energies and a forward maximum at high energies, the coefficient B changing sign at about 340 Mev. The total cross section shows a striking maximum near 290 Mev, of magnitude 205×10−30 cm2, and falls off above the maximum faster than λ2.

Elastic electron-proton scattering cross sections have been measured using the internal beam of the 6-BeV Cambridge Electron Accelerator at laboratory scattering angles between 31° and 90° for values of the four-momentum transfer squared ranging from q2=0.389 to 6.81 (BeV/c)2 (q2=10 to 175F−2). Incident electron energies ranged from 1.0 to 6.0 BeV. Scattered electrons from an internal liquid-hydrogen target were momentum-analyzed using a single quadrupole spectrometer capable of momentum analysis up to 3.0 BeV/c. Čerenkov and shower counters were used to help reject pion and low-energy background. The cross sections presented are absolute cross sections with experimental errors ranging from 6.8% to 20%. Separation of proton electromagnetic form factors have been made for all but the two highest momentum transfer points, using the Rosenbluth formula. Both form factors, GEp and GMp, were observed to continue to decrease as the momentum transfer increases. An upper limit to the possible asymptotic values of the proton electromagnetic form factors has been established.

The differential cross section for the reaction γ+p→π++n was measured at 32 laboratory photon energies between 589 and 1269 MeV at the Caltech synchrotron. At each energy, data have been obtained at typically 15π+ angles between 6° and 90° in the center-of-mass (c.m.) system. A magnetic spectrometer was used to detect the π+ photoproduced in a liquid-hydrogen target. Two Cerenkov counters were used to reject background of positrons and protons. The data clearly show the presence of a pole in the production amplitude due to one-pion exchange. Moravcsik fits to the angular distributions, including data from another experiment carried out by Thiessen, are presented. Extrapolation of these fits to the pole gives a value for the pion-nucleon coupling constant of 14.2±1.7, which is consistent with the accepted value. The "second" and "third" pion-nucleon resonances are evident as peaks in the total cross section and as changes in the shape of the angular distributions. At the third resonance, there is evidence for both a D52 and an F52 amplitude. The absence of large variations with energy in the 0° and 180° cross sections implies that the second and third resonances are mostly produced from an initial state with helicity 32.

The production of K 0 s, Λs and Λ s has been studied in a 280 GeV muon-proton scattering experiment with almost complete coverage of all kinematic regions. A study is made of the dependence of the multiplicities on the hadronic centre of mass energy, W , and of the Feynman x distributions. It is found that K 0 and Λ production is mostly central and increases strongly with W , whereas Λ production comes mainly from the remnant target system and is only weakly W dependent.

New results on the forward produced protons and antiprotons in high energy muon-nucleon scattering are presented. Their W 2 , z and p 2 T dependences are compared with those of the other charged hadrons. Significant differences are observed which can be related to the flavour content of the target and to a difference between the baryon content of quark and gluon jets.

Accurate measurements have been made of the π−π+ photoproduction ratio on deuterium, in the gammaray energy range 165-210 MeV, for several angles: 155°, 125°, 90° (center-of-mass system) and along Baldin's kinematical line. These last data are new contributions: π−π+=1.20±0.03 averaged between 165 and 180 MeV. The others are improvements of the accuracy of previous data. The comparison with Ball's theory, corrected for taking into account the I=12 phase shifts, gives for the coupling constant Λ for γ−π−p the value: 0.25<+Λe<0.75.

Absolute differential cross sections for the photoproduction of pions of 33.8-MeV laboratory kinetic energy from protons were measured at eight angles between 29.5 and 146.1° in the center-of-mass system. The over-all absolute accuracy is 4%, while the relative accuracy within the angular distribution is 3%. Comparison is made to various theoretical calculations, with and without inclusion of the effect of a γ−π−ρ-meson coupling. Existing calculations based on dispersion theory give only fair agreement with the data.

The ratio of the yields of negative and positive pions photoproduced in deuterium has been measured at six photon energies between 500 and 1000 Mev and at seven angles between 20° and 160° in the center-of-momentum system of the photon and target nucleon. Pions were selected with a magnetic spectrometer and identified using momentum and specific ionization in a scintillation counter telescope. The spectator model of the deuteron was used to identify the photon energy. Statistical errors assigned to the π−π+ ratio range between five and fifteen percent. The results of the present experiment join smoothly with the low-energy π−π+ ratios obtained by Sands et al. At high energies the π−π+ ratio varies from 0.5 at forward angles and energies near 900 Mev to 2.5 at 160° c.m. and energies 600 to 800 Mev. The cross sections for π− photo-production from neutrons have been derived from the π−π+ ratio and the CalTech π+ photoproduction data. The angular distributions for π− production are considerably different from those for π+; there is, for example, a systematic increase at the most backward angles. The energy dependence of the total cross section for π− is similar to that for π+, although the second resonance peak occurs at a slightly lower energy, and at 900 and 1000 Mev the π− cross section is smaller by a factor 1.6. A comparison is made of the cross sections for π+ photoproduction from hydrogen and deuterium, although the accuracy of this comparison is not high.

Using new data from 100 GeV c π − interactions, we find the energy dependence of the invariant cross-section in the target fragmentation (central) region to be consistent with an A + Bs − 1 2 (C + Ds − 1 4 ) behavior. The leading particle peak near x = + 1 exhibits a width in x which becomes smaller with increasing energy and an integrated cross section which is approximately energy independent.

Significant two-particle correlations of dynamical origin are observed in 200 GeV/c π−p inclusive interactions. This is demonstrated by comparison with kinematic correlations calculated from an independent-particle-emission model. Two distinct correlation types are observed: (a) unlike-particle correlations with correlation length ∼ 1.3 rapidity units independent of azimuthal separation, and (b) like-particle correlations with correlation length ∼ 0.4 rapidity units which are observed only for small azimuthal separations.

Results are presented for various meson and proton beams with momenta of 100, 200, and 300 GeV/c incident upon a hydrogen target. Photoproduction of $\Lambda$(1520) with liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets was examined at photon energies below 2.4 GeV in the SPring-8/LEPS experiment. For the first time, the differential cross sections were measured at low energies and with a deuterium target. A large asymmetry of the production cross sections from protons and neutrons was observed at backward K$^{+/0}$ angles. This suggests the importance of the contact term, which coexists with t-channel K exchange under gauge invariance. This interpretation was compatible with the differential cross sections, decay asymmetry, and photon beam asymmetry measured in the production from protons at forward K$^+$ angles.

Sixty-two charm events have been observed in an exposure of the SLAC Hybrid Facility toa backward sacttered laser beam. Cross sections are presented for the inclusive photoproduction of KS0, Λ, Λ¯, Ξ−, Ξ¯−, Σ0, and Σ*±(1385) at 20 GeV. An upper limit to Ω− production is also given. The data come from 284 000 hadronic events photoproduced in the SLAC 1-m hydrogen-bubble-chamber hybrid facility exposed to a nearly monochromatic, polarized 20-GeV backscattered photon beam. A comparison of the KS0, Λ, Λ¯, and Ξ− rates per inelastic event to π±p data show that γp rates are consistent with being higher than the π±p rates, providing evidence of an ss¯ component of the photon. The pair cross sections for KS0KS0, KS0Λ, KSoΛ¯, and ΛΛ¯ are presented. Results of a Fermilab experiment using the 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber are reported, with the main emphasis on pion production in the central region. Single-particle inclusive and semi-inclusive distributions in rapidity, Feynman x, and pT2 for both π− and π+ are presented and compared with results of other experiments. Two-particle distributions are investigated using the correlation-function formalism. The relation between inclusive and semi-inclusive correlation functions is discussed. The semi-inclusive correlation functions in rapidity are found to have short-range character compatible with the ideas of independent-cluster-emission models. Evidence for effects due to Bose-Einstein statistics of like particles is found by comparing the joint correlation function in rapidity and azimuthal angle, as well as the charged multiplicity associated with transverse momentum in the like- and unlike-charge combinations. Data on the average associated transverse momentum are also presented. The inclusive and semi-inclusive three-particle distributions are presented for all charge combinations. The inclusive three-particle correlations are found to be small for events with more than four particles in the final state. Two independent ways were found in which three-particle densities can be expressed in terms of one- and two-particle densities.

The measurements of the z and p T 2 distribution of hadrons produced in the interactions of 200 GeV muons with copper and carbon nuclei are shown in different x Bj and virtual photon energy intervals. Effects of the jet scattering are seen at the lowest virtual photon energies while for energies above 70 GeV there is no evidence of these effects. We report on an improved measurement of the value of the strong coupling constant σ s at the Z 0 peak, using the asymmetry of the energy-energy correlation function. The analysis, based on second-order perturbation theory and a data sample of about 145000 multihadronic Z 0 decays, yields α s ( M z 0 = 0.118±0.001(stat.)±0.003(exp.syst.) −0.004 +0.0009 (theor. syst.), where the theoretical systematic error accounts for uncertainties due to hadronization, the choice of the renormalization scale and unknown higher-order terms. We adjust the parameters of a second-order matrix element Monte Carlo followed by string hadronization to best describe the energy correlation and other hadronic Z 0 decay data. The α s result obtained from this second-order Monte Carlo is found to be unreliable if values of the renormalization scale smaller than about 0.15 E cm are used in the generator.
