Evidence for the light-by-light scattering process, $\gamma\gamma$ $\to$ $\gamma\gamma$, in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV is reported. The analysis is conducted using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 390 $\mu$b$^{-1}$ recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Light-by-light scattering processes are selected in events with two photons exclusively produced, each with transverse energy E$_\mathrm{T}^{\gamma}$ $>$ 2 GeV, pseudorapidity $|\eta^{\gamma}|$ $\lt$ 2.4, diphoton invariant mass $m^{\gamma\gamma}$ $\gt$ 5 GeV, diphoton transverse momentum $p_\mathrm{T}^{\gamma\gamma}$ $\lt$ 1 GeV, and diphoton acoplanarity below 0.01. After all selection criteria are applied, 14 events are observed, compared to expectations of 9.0 $\pm$ 0.9 (theo) events for the signal and 4.0 $\pm$ 1.2 (stat) for the background processes. The excess observed in data relative to the background-only expectation corresponds to a significance of 3.7 standard deviations, and has properties consistent with those expected for the light-by-light scattering signal. The measured fiducial light-by-light scattering cross section, $\sigma_\mathrm{fid} (\gamma\gamma$ $\to$ $\gamma\gamma) =$ 120 $\pm$ 46 (stat) $\pm$ 28 (syst) $\pm$ 12 (theo) nb, is consistent with the standard model prediction. The $m^{\gamma\gamma}$ distribution is used to set new exclusion limits on the production of pseudoscalar axion-like particles, via the $\gamma\gamma$ $\to$ a $\to$ $\gamma\gamma$ process, in the mass range $m_{\mathrm{a}} =$ 5-90 GeV.

Using the freon filled bubble chamber SKAT in the (anti)neutrino wide band beam of the Serpukhov accelerator we determine the neutral to charged current cross section ratios for neutrinos and antineutrinos below 30GeV. From these ratios we calculate in leading order a mixing parameter of the standard model of Θw=0.215±0.029.

The production of μe-pairs is studied in interactions of neutrinos with nuclei of heavy freon in the SKAT bubble chamber experiment. A rate of μ−e+ to charged current interactions above the charm threshold of\(R^{\mu ^ -e^ +}= (4.6 \pm 1.2) \cdot 10^{ - 3} \) is found. The properties of the observed μ−e+ events can be well described by assuming them to originate from the semileptonic decay of quasielastic produced charmed baryonsΛc and inclusive charmedD-meson production. The rates for these reactions are found to be (6.7±3.5)×10−2 and (2.5±0.9)×10−2, respectively. A total charmed particle production rate of (9.2±3.6)×10−2 is calculated.

Differential cross sections for the process pi +d to pp at seven energies in the region Tpi =280-450 MeV and in the angular range theta * approximately=4-90 degrees have been measured on the LNPI synchrocyclotron. The results include 94 new data points. The measurements have been carried out using a ten-channel hodoscope set-up. Statistical errors are between 2.5% and 7.8% depending on the scattering angle and Tpi . The data obtained indicate that there is an essential contribution from the partial wave with orbital angular momentum l=3 over the whole energy range considered. The authors also observe a noticeable contribution from the l=4 partial wave to the differential cross sections of the pi +d to pp reaction from Tpi >or=357 MeV. The total cross sections for the process pi +d to pp are also presented.
