A systematic analysis is presented on the reaction K + p → K ∗0 (890) Δ ++ for nine incident momenta between 4.6–16.0 GeV/ c . Cross sections, differential cross sections and vector meson single density matrix elements are given. As a function of energy, little if any change is observed in either the shapes of the differential cross sections or in the values of the density matrix elements. The data are interpreted in terms of current ideas on t -channel exchange mechanisms.

Inclusive and semi-inclusive production of Λ and\(\bar \Lambda\) inK+p interactions is studied at an incident momentum of 70 GeV/c. Cross sections and single particle distributions are presented and compared with data at lower energies. Scaling is observed between 32 and 70 GeV/c in the Feynmanx variable in the target and the beam fragmentation regions for Λ and\(\bar \Lambda\) inclusive production respectively. An increase of Λ (\(\bar \Lambda\)) production is observed in the beam (target) fragmentation regions, whereas the data at 70 and 32 GeV/c are reasonably close in the central region. The dependence of the Λ(\(\bar \Lambda\)) polarization as a function ofx is measured and found to be in general agreement with the results at 32 GeV/c. The (Λ\(\bar \Lambda\)) pair production cross section increases significantly from 32 to 70 GeV/c. The Λ and\(\bar \Lambda\) production associated with an identified proton is also studied.

Data are presented on the reactions K ± p → π 0 X, K ± p → η X, pp → π 0 X and p p → π 0 X in the kinematic region with s ⋍ 200 GeV 2 , x ≳ 0.7 and − t ≲ 1 GeV 2 . The data agree well with the predictions of triple-Regge theory and the K ∗ and nucleon Regge trajectories extracted from the data agree with the linear trajectories extrapolated from the particle poles.

We present results on the inclusive polarization of Λ hyperons produced in K + p interactions at 32 and 70 GeV/ c . A large positive Λ polarization is observed in the kaon fragmentation region. The polarization is energy independent, increases strongly with increasing x , but shows essentially no p T -dependence.

We present results on inclusive φ meson production in K + p interactions at 70 GeV/ c in the kaon fragmentation x >0.2 region. Comparison with other data on φ meson production in K ± and p induced reactions provides evidence that the strange valence-quark fragmentation or recombination processes play the dominant role in the K ± → φ transitions. Arguments are presented that the kaon valence strange s -quark carries a much higher momentum fraction than the u-quark. Evidence for the previously observed narrow φπ + state at mass ∼2.1 GeV is discussed.

The average charged particle multiplicity, 〈 n ch ( M X 2 )〉, in the reaction K + p→K o X ++ is studied as a function of the mass squared, M X 2 , of the recoil system X and also as a function of the K o transverse momentum, p T , at incident momenta of 5.0, 8.2 and 16.0 GeV/ c . The complete data samples yield distributions which are not independent of c.m. energy squared, s , They exhibit a linear dependence on log ( M X 2 X / M o 2 )[ M o 2 =1 GeV 2 ] with a change in slope occurring for M X 2 ≈ s /2, and do not agree with the corresponding distributions of 〈 n ch 〉 as a function of s for K + p inelastic scattering. Sub-samples of the data for which K o production via beam fragmentation, central production and target fragmentation are expected to be the dominant mechanisms show that, within error, the distribution of 〈 n ch ( M X 2 )〉 versus M X 2 is independent of incident momentum for each sub-sample separately. In particular in the beam fragmentation region the 〈 n ch ( M X 2 )〉 versus M X 2 distribution agrees rather well with that of 〈 n ch 〉 versus s for inelastic K + p interactions. The latter result agrees with recent results on the reactions pp → pX and π − p → pX in the NAL energy range. Evidence is presented for the presence of different production mechanisms in these separate regions.

The inclusive production of ρ0 mesons was measured in γp andh±p collisions at beam energies of 65 GeV≦Eγ≦175 GeV andEh=80, 140 GeV, respectively, whereh is π orK. Cross sections were determined for all beams and energies as functions ofxF (−0.1≦xF≦1.0),pT (0≦pT≦3.5 GeV/c) and the polar decay angle of the ρ0 by fitting the ρ0 signal in π+π- mass distributions. The ρ0 line shape is found to be distorted from a pure Breit-Wigner distribution throughout most of thexF−pT plane for both photon and hadron beams and a simple explanation is suggested. Throughout the paper emphasis is put on the comparison of photon and hadron beam data. The comparison of cross sections of γp andhp data provides a measure of the Vector Meson Dominance factor throughout thexF−pT range of the ρ0. The ρ0 production at lowpT can be described for both photon and hadron beams by a triple regge model at largexF. Similarly central production is well described by the quark-antiquark fusion model. At largepT there is an excess of ρ0 photoproduction which is consistent with the expected onset of pointlike photon interactions.

Inclusive production of direct soft photons is studied inK+p andK+π interactions at 250 GeV/c. Total cross sections, Feynman-x and transverse momentum distributions of direct γ's are presented. The measured cross sections are several times larger than expected from QED inner bremsstrahlung, indicating the presence of an anomalous soft photon source. The model of Lichard and Van Hove, based on the “cold quark-gluon plasma” picture, agrees with the data.

We present data on the production of the baryons Λ,\(\bar \Lambda \),p and of the baryon resonances Σ*+ (1385) and Δ++ (1232) inK+p and π+p interactions at 250 GeV/c. Results are given on total and semi-inclusive cross sections, Feynman-x spectra, transverse momentum distributions and Λ polarization. The data are compared with measurements at lower energies, with deep inclastic lepton nucleon data and with predictions of quark-parton models. The models underestimate Λ production in the central c.m. region, a feature also seen in recent heavy-ion data. This failure can be cured in JETSET 6.3 by adjustment of the di-quark break-up probability.

Single charged-particle inclusive cross sections for photon, pion and kaon beams on hydrogen at the CERN-SPS are presented as functions ofpT andxF. Data cover the range 0.0<pT<5.0 GeV/c and 0.0<xF<1.0 at incident momenta from 70 to 170 GeV/c. The comparison between photon- and hadron-induced data indicates a relative excess of particles withpT>1.6 GeV/c for the photon-induced data. We present inclusive ¶ and K *0 (892) cross sections and Feynman x -spectra in K + p collisions at 250 GeV/ c . In the K + fragmentation region, x > 0.2, the ratio of ¶ to K *0 (892) is used to estimate the strangeness suppression factor λ , with the result γ =0.17 ± 0.02 (stat ± 0.01 (syst). We see no evidence for an energy dependence of λ in the CM energy range 7.8 ≤ s ≤21.7 GeV.

Results are presented from experiment WA7 at the CERN SPS, which has measured the elastic differential cross sections of π ± p, K ± p, p p and pp at incident momen ta of 20, 30 and 50 GeV/ c . The measurements cover the momentum transfer range 0.5 < | t | < 8 (GeV/ c ) 2 , corresponding to c.m. scattering angles between 10° and 50°. The experimental set-up, trigger logic and data analysis are described. The experimental results are compared with existing meson-proton and nucleon-proton data at lower and higher energies covering the medium- and large-| t | region. We have studied the reactionspp→ppπ+π-,K+p→K+pπ+π−π, π+p→ π+,pπ+π− and π−p →π+π− at 147 GeV/c using the 30-inch Fermilab hybrid system. All four reactions were detected with the same apparatus and analyzed in the same way. The energy dependence of the channel cross section was found to beAp−0.6+B for thepp reaction andAp−1+B for the other three. About 90% of the cross section at 147 GeV/c can be accounted for by either beam or target diffraction. Some of the remaining cross section may come from double Pomeron exchange reactions which we tried to isolate. We have tested the hypothesis of a factorizable Pomeron and our data indicates a violation of this hypothesis. We show that the 3π mass enhancement in the mass region 1.2–1.4 GeV is diffractively produced in the π± beam reactions. Fourprong, four-constraint and six-prong, four-constraint cross sections are reported.

We find from the observed nuclear dependance of the cross sections, that about 18% of theJ/ψ are produced diffractively. Using known structure functions of the quarks in the nucleon and in the pion, we derive estimations for the gluon structure functions.

J/ ψ production at 40 GeV/ c by π ± , K ± , p and p incident on hydrogen has been studied and results compared with those obtained on tungsten in the same experiment. On hydrogen, J/ψ cross-section ratios relative to π − have been measured to be (for x F > 0) σ(π − ) : σ(π + ) : σ( p ) : σ( p ) = 1 : (0.78 ± 0.09) : (0.83 ± 0.35) : (0.07 ± 0.04) . The suppression of the proton induced cross sections shows the importance of calence quark-antiquark fusiin J/ψ production at this energy (i.e. M J 2 / ψ / s =0.13).

The reactions K ± p→K s 0 π ± p are studied at 30 and 50 GeV/ c . Data for these reactions were obtained using the Geneva-Lausanne spectrometer whose main characteristics are: (i) large forward acceptance; (ii) high-resolution time-of-flight for recoil proton momentum measurement; (iii) high data-taking rate and on-line pattern recognition. The K ∗ (1 − ), K ∗ (2 + ), K ∗ (3 − ) and K ∗ (4 + ) resonance parameters and production cross sections are determined. The K π production amplitudes are calculated both as a function of the K π mass and of the momentum transfer. Isoscalar natural parity exchange (NPE) is dominant. The NPE amplitudes are decomposed into pomeron- f-, ω-exchange contributions, and their energy dependence between 10 and 50 GeV/ c is shown to be well-described by a Regge pole model based on the f-dominated pomeron hypothesis.

We have studied the inclusive production of K*±(890) and Y*±(1385) in pp, π+p, and K+p interactions at 147 GeV/c. The experiment used the Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber with the hybrid spectrometer system. Results are based on a sample of 1916 observed KS and 932 observed A. Inclusive cross sections are given for K*± and Y*± production from the three beams, and comparisons are made with experiments at other energies. Feynman-x and transverse-momentum-squared distributions are also calculated. The results suggest that the K*− is entirely produced in the central region, while the K*+ includes a component from beam fragmentation. Comparisons are made with the additive quark model.

The energy dependence of the average of the charged multiplicity and its dispersion in π + /K + /p interaction on protons at 147 GeV/ c is found to be the same as in e + e − annihilations if an “effective energy” variable is used instead of the total energy. The effective energy S eff is defined as the invariant mass of all secondaries left after the two leading particles have been removed. Fitting the expression aS eff b to the average charge multiplicity 〈 n ch 〉, we find the power b to be in good agreement with the value of 0.25 predicted by Fermi's statistical model and by Landau's hydrodynamical model.

In an experiment with the 30-inch Hybrid Spectrometer at Fermilab we have obtained the inclusive and semi-inclusive production cross sections of the ϱ0 meson using a conventional background subtraction technique. Production cross sections for the ϱ0 are derived as a function of the Feynman scaling variablex, and the transverse variablespt2 andEt=(pt2+M2)1/2. The longitudinal distributions are compared with the (1−x) dependence of the proton and meson valence quark structure functions, using various forms of recombination and fragmentation models. The transverse distributions are compared with thermodynamic models. We give density matrix elements for the ϱ0 production from pions in the extreme forward region.

Results are presented from a study of inclusive neutral strange particle production by a 147 GeV/ c tagged π + /K + /p beam in the Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber. The experiment made use of the proportional hybrid spectrometer system. Results are based on 995 K S 0 , 485 Λ, and 83 Λ found in a sample of 132 000 pictures. Cross sections are given for inclusive production of these particles by each of the three beam particles, and comparisons are made with measurements at other energies. Topological cross sections are also calculated, and KNO multiplicity scaling is investigated. Distributions are presented of invariant cross sections as functions of the Feynman scaling variable x and c.m. rapidity y . Inclusive charged pion production is studied in an exposure of BEBC, filled with hydrogen, to an incidentK+ beam of 70 GeV/c. Total cross sections for pion production and inclusive longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions of π−'s and of positive particles are presented and compared with data at lower energies. Earlier evidence for scaling in the fragmentation regions is confirmed. Experimental results on $\pi^0$ production in $K^+$p interactions at 8.2 GeV/$c$ incident momentum are presented. Average $\pi^0$ multiplicities for given prong numbers are evaluated. They are consistent both with the corresponding results for pp interactions at 12 GeV/$c$ chosen for comparison because they have the same average prong number) and with a model where total multiplicity distributions are calculated from the Czyżewski--Rybicki formula and the charge branching ratios from the statistical model. Some averages over the $\pi^0$ momentum distribution are also evaluated. In particular it is found that $\pi^0$-s produced in two prong interactions go predominantly forward.

The inclusive reactions h+p→ φ +X, (h= π ±, ,K ± ,p ± ), are studied for 0⪅ x F ⪅0.3 and p ⊥ ⩽ 1 GeV at 93 and and 63 GeV incident momentum. Differential cross sections d σ /d p ⊥ 2 and dσ /d x F are presented and are compared with predictions of the naive parton model.

A description is given of an experiment to study elastic scattering of π ± , K ± and p on protons at c.m. scattering angles from 45° to 100° at incident laboratory momenta 20 GeV/ c and 30 GeV/ c . The corresponding t range is from −6.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 to −28 (GeV/ c ) 2 . There are no previous observations for these reactions in this t range. High intensity and large geometrical acceptance were required in order to measure the low cross sections. The experiment used a double-arm spectrometer. MWPCs were used for reconstruction, and threshold and differential Čerenkov counters for identification. Scintillation counters, Čerenkov counters and a hadron calorimeter were used in the trigger. The trigger logic utilized specially designed matrices and a hard wired microprocessor. The π − p elastic scattering cross sections follow approximately the dimensional counting rule from 3.5 GeV/ c .and up to 30 GeV/ c . The cross sections decrease by seven orders of magnitude in this energy range. The data is compared to quark models. None of these models give a comprehensive description of the results. However, some modifications to these models improve their consistency with the data.

We report on a measurement of elastic differential cross sections for p±p, π±p, and K±p at 100 and 200 GeV/c in the range 0.03<|t|<0.10 (GeV/c)2. Our data display a simple exponential dependence which is consistent with other measurements in this t region or with extrapolations from higher t.

We have measured the polarization parameter and differential cross sections in K+p elastic scattering from a polarized target from small |t| and small |u| at five momentum points: 1.7, 2.1, 2.4, 2.7, and 3.0 GeV/c. The polarized-proton target was butanol cooled at 0.5° by a He3-He4 refrigerator; a combination of multiwire proportional chambers and scintillation counters detected the scattered particles. The results for small |u| are discussed in the context of pure Regge-pole models with exchange-degenerate Λ trajectories.

Joint decay distributions have been studied in the reaction K + p → K ∗o (1420)Δ ++ at 5.0 GeV/ c in the transversity spin reference frame. Two alternative spin-parity assignments 2 + and 3 − for the K ∗ resonance have been considered and a comparison with the quark-model predictions has been made. The predictions of the quark model are equally well satisfied by the experimental results for both the 2 + and 3 − spin-parity assignments.
