Cross sections or upper limits are reported for 12 meson-baryon and two baryon-baryon reactions for an incident momentum of 9.9 GeV/c, near 90° c.m.: π±p→pπ±,pp±,π+°±,K+Σ±, (Λ0/Σ0)K0; K±p→pK±; p±p→pp. By studying the flavor dependence of the different reactions, we have been able to isolate the quark-interchange mechanism as dominant over gluon exchange and quark-antiquark annihilation.

We present a measurement of the elastic differential cross section $d\sigma(p\bar{p}\rightarrow p\bar{p})/dt$ as a function of the four-momentum-transfer squared t. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $\approx 31 nb^{-1}$ collected with the D0 detector using dedicated Tevatron $p\bar{p} $ Collider operating conditions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV and covers the range $0.26 <|t|< 1.2 GeV^2$. For $|t|<0.6 GeV^2$, d\sigma/dt is described by an exponential function of the form $Ae^{-b|t|}$ with a slope parameter $ b = 16.86 \pm 0.10(stat) \pm 0.20(syst) GeV^{-2}$. A change in slope is observed at $|t| \approx 0.6 GeV^2$, followed by a more gradual |t| dependence with increasing values of |t|.

Differential cross sections for p p elastic scattering have been measured for very small momentum transfers at six different incident antiproton momenta in the range 3.7 to 6.2 GeV/c by the detection of recoil protons at scattering angles close to 90°. Forward scattering parameters σ T , b , and ϱ have been determined. For the ϱ-parameter, up to an order of magnitude higher level of precision has been achieved compared to that in earlier experiments. It is found that existing dispersion theory predictions are in disagreement with our results for the ϱ-parameter.

The high antiproton-proton luminosity obtained by using a target system consisting of a hydrogen gas-jet crossing a coasting beam of cooled antiproton circulating in one of the rings of CERN's ISR provides the possibility to measure low cross section reactions with very high precision. We present measurements of the antiproton-proton elastic cross section at 90° CM at incident momenta between 3.5 GeV/ c and 5.7 GeV/ c . The precision of these measurements is much higher than previously reported results. The data show that the cross section of this reaction decreases faster than s −12 over this momentum range.

Proton-antiproton elastic scattering was measured at the CERN SPS Collider at the centr-of-mass energy s =546 GeV in the Coulomb interference region. The data provide information on the phase of the hadronic amplitude in the forward direction. The conventional analysis gives for the ratio ϱ of the real to the imaginary part of the hadronic amplitude the result ϱ =0.24±0.04.
Axis error includes +- 0.025/0.025 contribution (Normalisation was fixed using a previous UA4 measurement of the total cross section: sig(name=tot)*(1 + alpha**2)).

Proton-antiproton elastic scattering was measured at the centre-of-mass energy s = 630 GeV in the four-momentum transfer range 0.7 ⩽ − t ⩽ 2.2 GeV 2 . The new data confirm our previous results at s = 546 GeV on the presence of a break in the t -distribution at − t ≃ 0.9 GeV 2 which is followed by a shoulder, and extend the momentum transfer range to larger values. The t -dependence of the differential cross section beyond the break is discussed.

Proton-antiproton elastic scattering was measured at the center-of-mass energy s =546 GeV in the four-momentum transfer range 0.45⩽−⩽1.55GeV 2 . The shape of the t -distribution is quite different from that observed in proton-proton scattering at the ISR. Rather than a dip-bump structure, a kink is present at − ≈0.9GeV 2 followed by a shoulder. The cross section at the second maximum is more than one order of magnitude higher than at the ISR.

Results are presented from experiment WA7 at the CERN SPS, which has measured the elastic differential cross sections of π ± p, K ± p, p p and pp at incident momen ta of 20, 30 and 50 GeV/ c . The measurements cover the momentum transfer range 0.5 < | t | < 8 (GeV/ c ) 2 , corresponding to c.m. scattering angles between 10° and 50°. The experimental set-up, trigger logic and data analysis are described. The experimental results are compared with existing meson-proton and nucleon-proton data at lower and higher energies covering the medium- and large-| t | region. Some prominent models and their predictions for elastic scattering at WA7 energies and beyond are reviewed, with emphasis on geometrical scaling, factorizing eikonal models, lowest-order QCD and other dynamical exchange-type models. Results for p p two-body annihilation into π − π + and K − K + at 30 and 50 GeV/ c , obtained in parallel with the elastic p p data, are also presented.

p p and pp elastic scattering differential cross sections are presented for momentum transfer 0.6< t <2.1 GeV 2 and √ s = 53 GeV. Measurements were made in the same apparatus at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. The p p and pp results are in statistical agreement with one another over the entire t range, although the point at t =1.32 GeV 2 is 1.5 σ above the pp data. The p p points appear to have the same shape as the predictions of Donnachie and Landshoff but are significantly lower in magnitude for 0.9< t <1.5 GeV 2 .

Proton-antiproton and proton-proton elastic scattering have been measured in the four-momentum transfer range 0.001⩽| t |⩽0.06 GeV 2 for center-of-mass energy 52.8 GeV at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). Using the known pp total cross section, a simultaneous fit to the pp̄ and pp differential cross sections yields the pp̄ total cross section; in addition, we obtain the ratio of the real-to-imaginary part of the forward nuclear-scattering amplitude and the nuclear-slope parameter for both pp̄ and pp. Our results show conclusively that the pp̄ total cross section is rising at ISR energies and lend support to conventional theories in which the difference between the pp̄ and pp total cross section vanishes at very high energy.

Results are presented on π±p, K±p, and p±p elastic scattering measured with an apparatus having acceptance of 0.5<−t<2.5 (GeV/c)2 and 0.9<−t<11 (GeV/c)2 at 100 and 200 GeV/c, respectively. A diffractionlike dip is seen for the first time in the π−p t distribution at −t=4 (GeV/c)2. All meson-proton cross sections are found to be similar in the range 1<−t<2.5 (GeV/c)2, although some small systematic differences are observed. The p p elastic differential cross section at 30 GeV/ c incident momentum has been measured in a two-arm spectrometer experiment (WA7) at the CERN SPS. The | t |-range covered extends from 0.5 to 5.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 . A pronounced dip-bump structure is observed, with a sharp minimum around | t | ≈ 1.7 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The results are compared with existing p p data at lower energies and with our earlier p p data at 50 GeV/ c . A number of model predictions are discussed. We also compare the p p 30 GeV/ c differential cross section with that of pp at the same momentum. Finally, the energy dependence of the p p fixed-| t | differential cross in the incident momentum range 3.6 to 50 GeV/ c is presented.

A description is given of an experiment to study elastic scattering of π ± , K ± and p on protons at c.m. scattering angles from 45° to 100° at incident laboratory momenta 20 GeV/ c and 30 GeV/ c . The corresponding t range is from −6.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 to −28 (GeV/ c ) 2 . There are no previous observations for these reactions in this t range. High intensity and large geometrical acceptance were required in order to measure the low cross sections. The experiment used a double-arm spectrometer. MWPCs were used for reconstruction, and threshold and differential Čerenkov counters for identification. Scintillation counters, Čerenkov counters and a hadron calorimeter were used in the trigger. The trigger logic utilized specially designed matrices and a hard wired microprocessor. The π − p elastic scattering cross sections follow approximately the dimensional counting rule from 3.5 GeV/ c .and up to 30 GeV/ c . The cross sections decrease by seven orders of magnitude in this energy range. The data is compared to quark models. None of these models give a comprehensive description of the results. However, some modifications to these models improve their consistency with the data.

Elastic π±−p, K−−p, and p¯−p scattering cross sections have been measured using three different experimental arrangements covering the c.m. angular regions ∼20°-120°, ∼135°-169°, and ∼165°-180° at incident momenta from 6 to 17 GeV/c. In the region 130°-180°, only π±−p scattering was measured. In the angular region near 180°, the energy dependences and shapes of the π−p backward peaks were determined up to crossed-momentum transfers of u∼−2 (GeV/c)2. At all energies, the π+−p backward peak had a sharp dip at u=−0.13 (GeV/c)2, with no similar effect in the π−−p case. Nearly complete angular distributions of π−−p elastic scattering from 20° to 180° have been obtained at 6 and 10 GeV/c. These results at 6 and 10 GeV/c as well as at 8 GeV/c reveal a sharp dip in π−−p scattering at t=−3 (GeV/c)2. Several structures in the form of dips or shoulders were seen in the p¯−p angular distributions also, with less pronounced structure observed in K−−p scattering. At fixed momentum transfer, all cross sections when expressed as dσdt appear to be decreasing with increasing energy.

The differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of π+, π−, K+, K−, p, and p¯ on protons have been measured in the t interval -0.04 to -0.75 GeV2 at five momenta: 50, 70, 100, 140, and 175 GeV/c. The t distributions have been parametrized by the quadratic exponential form dσdt=Aexp(B|t|+C|t|2) and the energy dependence has been described in terms of a single-pole Regge model. The pp and K+p diffraction peaks are found to shrink with α′∼0.20 and ∼0.15 GeV−2, respectively. The p¯p diffraction peak is antishrinking while π±p and K−p are relatively energy-independent. Total elastic cross sections are calculated by integrating the differential cross sections. The rapid decline in σel observed at low energies has stopped and all six reactions approach relatively constant values of σel. The ratio of σelσtot approaches a constant value for all six reactions by 100 GeV, consistent with the predictions of the geometric-scaling hypothesis. This ratio is ∼0.18 for pp and p¯p, and ∼0.12-0.14 for π±p and K±p. A crossover is observed between K+p and K−p scattering at |t|∼0.19 GeV2, and between pp and p¯p at |t|∼0.11 GeV2. Inversion of the cross sections into impact-parameter space shows that protons are quite transparent to mesons even in head-on collisions. The probability for a meson to pass through a proton head-on without interaction inelastically is ∼20% while it is only ∼6% for an incident proton or antiproton. Finally, the results are compared with various quark-model predictions.

In a single-arm spectrometer experiment, high-precision measurements of dσdt for π−p, K−p, and p¯p elastic scattering have been made at 8 and 16 GeV/c. The π−p data show rich structure at 8 GeV/c, indicative of strong non-Pomeron contributions, while the 16-GeV/c data are much smoother. For −t≳1 (GeV/c)2 there is a strong s dependence while there is very little for −t<1 (GeV/c)2. For p¯p scattering the forward region is smoothly diffractive for −t<0.4 (GeV/c)2 and shows antishrinkage. The exponential slope parameter b is measured to be 12.36 ± 0.04 (GeV/c)−2 at 8 GeV/c and 11.40 ± 0.04 (GeV/c)−2 at 16 GeV/c. The structure near −t=0.6 (GeV/c)2 seen at lower energies is still obvious at 16 GeV/c. The K−p data show some structure at 8 GeV/c, but can be represented adequately by a quadratic exponential form. At 16 GeV/c the K−p angular distribution shows antishrinkage and lies above the 8-GeV/c cross section for 0.11<−t<0.8 (GeV/c)2.

The differential cross sections of the elastic p p reaction have been measured at 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 and 2.6 GeV/ c incident p momentum. The measurements have been performed at the CERN PS using a system of multiwire proportional chambers. The angular region covers scattering angles from 0 to ∼200 mrad. Interference effects between the Coulomb and the nuclear amplitudes are used to derive the ratio of the real to imaginary part of the forward nuclear amplitude. An extensive investigation of antiproton-proton interactions at 5.7 GeV/c without strange-particle production was carried out using a hydrogen bubble chamber. Cross-sections for different channels are given and discussed. The reliability of the analysis was checked using artificially generated events. The cross-sections for elastic scattering, for all processes involving annihilation, and for all other inelastic processes are respectively σel=(16.3±0.6)mb,σannlbil=(22.5±2.0)mb, σinel=(24.8±2.0)mb. TheN * 1:38 is present both in the single and multiple pion production channels. For the reaction MediaObjects/11539_2007_Article_BF02720569_f1.jpg a cross-section of (1.05±0.21) mb was obtained. Cross-sections forN * 1238 production in other channels are also given. Some indication of the presence ofI=1/2 isobars was found in the nucleon-pion and the nucleon-two-pion systems. The inelastic nonannihilation reactions were found to be strongly peripheral. The one-pion exchange model including either a form factor or corrections for absorption was applied to the reaction MediaObjects/11539_2007_Article_BF02720569_f2.jpg . Neither version of the model could correctly account for all features of the reaction. The average number of pions in the annihilation was found to be 7.3±0.6. The presence of an asymmetry in the angular distribution of the charged pions was confirmed at this energy; it is due mostly to high-energy pions. The production of ρ and ω mesons was observed in various annihilation channels. Rates of up to 80% for ρ production and up to 15% for ω production were obtained by fitting phase-space and Breit-Wigner curves to the effective-mass distributions of different channels.
