MEASUREMENT OF THE REAL TO IMAGINARY RATIO OF THE ANTI-P P FORWARD SCATTERING AMPLITUDES

We have measured the ratio of the real to the imaginary parts of the p¯p forward-scattering amplitude in the incident-momentum range 360 to 650 MeV/c. These results are in good agreement with predictions of the Paris nucleon-antinucleon potential model which include spin-flip effects.

Λ , Ξ and Ω yields and transverse mass spectra have been measured in Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/ c . The yields in Pb-Pb interactions are presented as a function of the collision centrality and compared with those obtained from p-Pb collisions. Strangeness enhancement is observed which increases with centrality and with the strangeness content of the hyperon.

WA97 results on strangeness production in lead lead collisions at 158-A-GeV/c

Preliminary results from WA97 measurements on Λ, Ξ and Ω production in lead-lead and proton-lead collisions are presented, along with a comparison of WA97 proton-lead data with previous WA85 proton-tungsten results. The ratio Ω gX seems to be enhanced in lead initiated reactions compared to proton initiated reactions.

Nuclear dependence of neutral D meson production by 800-GeV/c protons

The nuclear dependence for 800 GeV/c proton production of neutron D mesons has been measured near xF=0 in Experiment 789 at Fermilab. D mesons from beryllium and gold targets were detected with a pair spectrometer and a silicon vertex detector via their decay D→Kπ. No nuclear dependence is found, with a measured α=1.02±0.03±0.02. The measured differential cross section, dσ/dxF, for neutral-D-meson production at 〈xF〉=0.031 is 58±3±7 μb/nucleon. The integrated cross section obtained by extrapolation of the measured cross section to all xF is 17.7±0.9±3.4 μb/nucleon and is consistent with previous measurements.
