The center of mass longitudinal momentum distributions of π− mesons produced in K+p interactions at 12.7 GeV/c and in π+p interactions at 7 GeV/c exhibit an asymmetry similar to that observed, for example, in single particle production in 25 GeV/c π−p interactions. This asymmetry is discussed in terms of quark structure of hadrons and other dynamical models.

Cross sections and density-matrix elements for π−p→ϕn have been measured for - −t≲1.5 GeV2 at 3, 4, 5, and 6 GeV/c, using the Argonne effective-mass spectrometer to observe the decay ϕ(1019)→K+K−. This is the first observation of the reaction in this energy range. The remarkably flat differential cross section at 4 GeV/c and the strong energy dependence suggest a production mechanism not normally seen at these energies. Data on K−p→ϕΛ and K−p→ϕΣ0 from the same experiment are also presented.

The spectrum and yield of protons produced by 60-, 100-, and 200-MeV π+ and π− beams on targets of He4, C12, Ni62, and Ta181 have been measured at 45° and 90°. A distinct high-energy component is seen in the protons from He4, which is consistent with a two-body absorption mechanism. Its cross section at 220 MeV is somewhat larger than calculated from the π+ + D process. Possible evidence is also seen for multinucleon absorption modes. The data on heavier nuclei are consistent with earlier experiments.

A clear, prompt dimuon signal has been observed in a low-statistics streamer-chamber experiment with 16-GeV/c πp interactions. The good mass resolution makes it possible to identify the contributions from ρ and ω decays and η and ω Dalitz decays. An excess of events is observed in the mass region ∼400-600 MeV which is not accounted for by the above-mentioned decays.

Differential cross sections have been measured for the reaction π−p→p¯d. At 4 GeV/c the total cross section is 0.58 ± 0.08 μb with an angular distribution consistent with isotropy. At 5 GeV/c a pronounced forward dip occurs. In contradiction to simple baryon-exchange models, the cross section is found to be an order of magnitude smaller than that for the line-reversed reaction pp→π+d. Upper limits for π−d→p¯t were also found.

A measurement is reported of charged multiplicity distributions of high-mass diffractive π±, K±, and p± states produced in 100 and 200 GeV/c hadron-proton collisions, h+p→X+p. The distributions are described well by a Gaussian function that depends only on the available mass M=Mx−Mh, has a maximum at n0≅2M12, and a peak-to-width ratio n0D≅2.
