We have measured the cross sections at 90° c.m. for π± and π0 photoproduction with polarized photons. The photon energies ranged from 0.8 to 2.2 GeV. We compare the resonant "bumps" in the cross section with theoretical models. The measured asymmetry agrees with a quark-model calculation though the predicted cross sections are low.

The cross section for photoproduction of single π+ from hydrogen has been measured at laboratory angles of 110°, 127.5° and 152°, between 0.9- and 3.2-GeV incident photon energy. Measurements have been made with approximately 15% statistical accuracy at about 40 photon energies at each angle. The results agree well with the previous Caltech data of Thiessen. The cross section shows a rapid drop with increasing energy with superimposed bumps or shoulders corresponding to the N(1688), Δ(1920), and Δ(2420). A shallow minimum is observed at the N(2190) resonance.

The differential cross sections at 180° for the reactions γ+p→π++n and γ+n→π−+p were measured using a magnetic spectrometer to detect π± mesons. In order to reduce the spread of energy resolution due to the nucleon motion inside the deuteron, a photon difference method was employed with a 50-MeV step for the reaction γ+n→π−+p. The data show structures at the second- and the third-resonance regions for both reactions. A simple phenomenological analysis was made for fitting the data, and the results are compared with those of previous analyses.

Recoil-proton polarization in neutral-pion photoproduction between 1000 and 1800 mev

Measurements are presented of the recoil-proton polarization for π0 photoproduction angles near 64° in the c.m. system. The steep angular dependence observed by others at lower energies persists to at least 1500 MeV, and the polarization crosses through zero near 63° over the entire 900-1600-MeV energy interval. Summary fits are made to available recoil-proton polarization data, 950-1250 MeV, and are found to require terms of order cos3θ, but no higher.

Qausi-elastic ω production by ep scattering in the kinematic region 0.3. < Q 2 < 1.4 GeV 2 and 1.7 < W < 2.8 GeV was studied using a streamer chamber at DESY. The production angular distribution for γ V p → ω p has a strong non-peripheral component for W < 2 GeV. The ω production cross section falls by a factor of 4 as W changes from 1.7 to 2.8 GeV. In contrast the cross section for ω production with | t | < 0.5 GeV 2 is W independent between 1.7 and 2.8 GeV and for W > 2.0 GeV consistent in both W and Q 2 dependence with the predictions of a model based on one-pion exchange and diffraction.

Photoproduction of Single Neutral Pions from Hydrogen at Energies 0.6 to 1.2 BeV

Phys.Rev. 130 (1963) 2089-2097, 1963.
Inspire Record 944976 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.26774

Measurements of the differential cross section for the process γ+p→π0+p have been made at three pion center-of-mass angles: 60°, 90°, and 120°. Values were obtained at intervals of 0.05 BeV (incident laboratory photon energy, k) from approximately 0.6 to 1.2 BeV. Most of the data were obtained by detecting only the recoil protons with a large, wedge-shaped, single-focusing magnetic spectrometer and associated equipment. For θ′π0=60° and k≤0.94 BeV the π0 decays were also required, the decay photons being detected by a lead glass total absorption counter. Although the experimental resolution was considerably narrower than that of most of the previous experiments, its averaging effect was still appreciable in certain regions. Using a six-parameter fit, the data at each angle were unfolded in an effort to eliminate the effects of resolution and to obtain the true cross sections as a function of energy. The results compare reasonably well with those of previous experiments once differences in resolutions and systematic errors are taken into account. The results did not agree with the predictions of a simple resonance model with the resonance quantum numbers suggested by Peierls. The positions and widths of the two cross-section peaks in this energy region are quite similar to those observed in π−p scattering.

The elastic electron-proton scattering cross section has been measured at laboratory angles between 90° and 144° and for values of the four-momentum transfer squared between 25 and 45 F−2 (incident electron laboratory energies from 830 to 1360 MeV). Both the scattered electrons and the recoil protons were momentum analyzed and counted in coincidence, making possible background-free measurements down to cross sections of the order of 10−35 cm2/sr. The data are consistent with the Rosenbluth formula, and the resulting form factors tie on well with previous measurements at lower momentum transfer, continuing the established trend.

Pi-+ photoproduction in forward direction

Phys.Rev.Lett. 24 (1970) 687-690, 1970.

The ratio of π− to π+ off deuterium was measured as a function of incident photon energy from 600 to 1700 MeV in the forward direction. The ratio shows a broad dip around a center-of-mass energy of 1700 MeV, resulting presumably from the collective effect of several isospin-½ resonances in this energy region. Such a change in the ratio is reflected in the rapid variation of the isoscalar photoproduction amplitude since we found the isovector photoproduction amplitude to be a relatively smooth function decreasing slowly with increasing incident photon energy.

Measurements of the differential cross section for the process γ+p→π0+p have been made at eight pion center-of-mass angles in the range 51-135° and for incident photon energies from approximately 600-1200 MeV. The bremsstrahlung photon beam used was obtained from the California Institute of Technology electron synchrotron. Both the recoil proton and one γ ray from the decay of the π0 were detected. The incident photon energy was determined by measuring the laboratory angle and time of flight of the recoil proton. The angular distributions obtained indicate that the third pion-nucleon resonance is predominantly a D(52) resonance excited by a magnetic quadrupole transition. It can also be concluded that any contribution to the π0 photoproduction cross section from a virtual vector-meson exchange process is probably negligible in the region of the second and third pion-nucleon resonances.

The Λ polarization and the differential cross section for the reaction γ+p→K++Λ have been measured, using the Caltech synchrotron, at 90° in the c.m. system and at laboratory photon energies of 1100, 1200, and 1300 MeV. Protons from the asymmetric decay of the Λ were detected by counters placed above and below the production plane. Kaons were identified by their behavior in a thick range telescope. Polarization results were PΛ=+0.34±0.09 at 1100 MeV, +0.30±0.07 at 1200 MeV, and +0.08±0.07 at 1300 MeV, where PΛ was measured in the p^γ×p^Λ direction. The differential cross section was constant with energy at 0.14±0.01 μb/sr. Although the apparent bump in the polarization at 90° at a total energy of ≈1700 MeV adds support to models which invoke a resonance here, no really new conclusions can be reached.

The differential cross section for the reaction γ+p→π++n was measured using the Caltech 1.5-GeV electron synchrotron. The positive pions were detected and momentum analyzed in a multichannel magnetic spectrometer and the data were recorded in the memory of a pulse-height analyzer. The energy resolution was improved over previous experiments and an attempt was made to minimize systematic errors. The data are presented in the form of energy distributions at 12 lab angles from 34° to 155°, and the range of lab proton energies extended from 500 to 1350 MeV. Data were not taken at all energies for each angle, since the maximum useful momentum of the spectrometer, 600 MeVc, restricted the maximum energy for lab angles less than or equal to 74°.
