The differential elastic scattering cross sections for negative pions on ; protons were measured at incident momenta of 1.51, 2.01, and 2.53 Bev/c with ; emphasis on the angular region outside the diffraction peak. The purpose of the ; experiment was to examine the behavior of the largeangle differential elastic ; cross section as a function of energy from the energy of the highest known ; resonance in the pion-nucleon system into the region where the total. cross ; sections appear to be approaching an asymptotic value. The experiment was ; performed at the Bevatron, using a luminescent chamber system to photograph the ; tracks of the scattered pion and the recoil proton from a liquid hydrogen target. ; A total of 2412 elastic scatterings were analyzed at 1.51 Bev/c, 1300 events at ; 2.01 Bev/c, and 1080 events at 2.53 Bev/c. From the existing data it may be ; noted that the backward bump, which has a maximum height of 2.1 mb/sr at 900 Mev ; and 1.1 mb/sr at 1020 Mev, is down to 0.4 mb/sr at 1.51 Bev/c (1.37 Bev), and is ; not present at 2.01 or 2.53 Bev/c. The angular distributions behind the ; diffraction peak at 2.01 and 2.53 Bev/c are rougly constant, decreasing from 0.18 ; mb/sr at 2.01 Bev/c to 0.125 mb/sr at 2.53 Bev/c. Although the data can be taken ; to suggest some oscillatory structure in this region, they are not inconsistent ; with an isotropic distribution that might be interpreted as evidence for an S-; wave scattering behind the diffraction peak. In a bubble chamber experiment, we have measured p p elastic scattering at nine momenta in the range 1.51–2.90 GeV/ c . The extrapolation of the small angle region to t = 0 is discussed and compared with results of other experiments. The differential cross sections are fitted to an adaptation of the Frahn-Venter optical model and also compared to Regge-pole model predictions.

The ratio of the analysing powers for quasi-elastic pp scattering in carbon and for elastic scattering on free protons was measured fromT = 0.52 to 2.8 GeV by scattering of the SATURNE II polarized proton beam on carbon and CH2. It was found to have a maximum at about 0.8 GeV. The energy dependence for quasielastic scattering on carbon had not been measured before above 1 GeV. The observed effect was not expected from simple models.

Excitation functions AN(pp,Θc.m.) of the analyzing power in pp→ elastic scattering have been measured with a polarized atomic hydrogen target for projectile momenta pp between 1000 and 3300 MeV/ c. The experiment was performed for scattering angles 30°≤Θc.m.≤90° using the recirculating beam of the proton storage ring COSY during acceleration. The resulting excitation functions and angular distributions of high internal consistency have significant impact on the recent phase shift solution SAID SP99, in particular, on the spin triplet phase shifts between 1000 and 1800 MeV, and demonstrate the limited predictive power of single-energy phase shift solutions at these energies.

Excitation functions of proton-proton elastic scattering cross sections have been measured in narrow steps for projectile momenta pp (energies Tp) from 1100 to 3300MeV/c (500 to 2500 MeV) in the angular range 35°≤Θc.m.≤90° with a detector providing ΔΘc.m.≈1.4° resolution. Measurements have been performed continuously during projectile acceleration in the cooler synchrotron COSY with an internal CH2 fiber target, taking particular care to monitor luminosity as a function of Tp. The advantages of this experimental technique are demonstrated, and the excitation functions obtained are compared to existing cross section data. No evidence for narrow structures was found.

We report measurements of the proton form factors GEp and GMp extracted from elastic scattering in the range 1≤Q2≤3 (GeV/c)2 with total uncertainties < 15% in GEp and < 3% in GMp. Comparisons are made to theoretical models, including those based on perturbative QCD, vector-meson dominance, QCD sum rules, and diquark constituents in the proton. The results for GEp are somewhat larger than indicated by most theoretical parametrizations, and the ratios of the Pauli and Dirac form factors Q2(F2pF1p) are lower in value and demonstrate a weaker Q2 dependence than those predictions. A global extraction of the elastic form factors from several experiments in the range 0.1 0.1<Q2<10 (GeV/c)2 is also presented.
Point-to-point systematic uncertainty is 0.5%, overall normailzation uncertainty is 1.9%.

The proton elastic electric and magnetic form factors, GEp(Q2) and GMp(Q2), have been separately measured in the range Q2=1.75 to 8.83 (GeV/c)2, more than doubling the Q2 range of previous data. Scaled by the dipole fit, GD(Q2), the results for GMp(Q2)/μpGD(Q2) decrease smoothly from 1.05 to 0.91, while GEp(Q2)/GD(Q2) is consistent with unity. Comparisons are made to QCD sum rule, diquark, constitutent quark, and vector meson dominance models, none of which agree with all of the new data. The ratio Q2F2/F1 approaches a constant value for Q2>3 (GeV/c)2.
