Baryon resonance production in quasi-two-body reactions has been studied for the channels K + p→K°p π + , K + n π + and K + p π ° at beam momenta of 2.53, 2.76 and 3.20 GeV/ c . The production cross sections, four-momentum transfer distributions and density matrix elements are given for the Δ(1236), N ∗ (1400), N ∗ (1500) and N ∗ (1680) states. The reaction K + p→K° Δ ++ (1236) is compared to the line reversed reaction K − n → K °Δ − and the charge-exchange SU(3) sum rule for pseudo-scalar meson plus Δ(1236) is tested.

In a bubble chamber experiment, we have measured p p elastic scattering at nine momenta in the range 1.51–2.90 GeV/ c . The extrapolation of the small angle region to t = 0 is discussed and compared with results of other experiments. The differential cross sections are fitted to an adaptation of the Frahn-Venter optical model and also compared to Regge-pole model predictions.

The ratio of the analysing powers for quasi-elastic pp scattering in carbon and for elastic scattering on free protons was measured fromT = 0.52 to 2.8 GeV by scattering of the SATURNE II polarized proton beam on carbon and CH2. It was found to have a maximum at about 0.8 GeV. The energy dependence for quasielastic scattering on carbon had not been measured before above 1 GeV. The observed effect was not expected from simple models.

Cross-section values for Compton scattering on the proton were measured at 25 kinematic settings over the range s = 5-11 and -t = 2-7 GeV2 with statistical accuracy of a few percent. The scaling power for the s-dependence of the cross section at fixed center of mass angle was found to be 8.0 +/ 0.2, strongly inconsistent with the prediction of perturbative QCD. The observed cross-section values are in fair agreement with the calculations using the handbag mechanism, in which the external photons couple to a single quark.

Excitation functions AN(pp,Θc.m.) of the analyzing power in pp→ elastic scattering have been measured with a polarized atomic hydrogen target for projectile momenta pp between 1000 and 3300 MeV/ c. The experiment was performed for scattering angles 30°≤Θc.m.≤90° using the recirculating beam of the proton storage ring COSY during acceleration. The resulting excitation functions and angular distributions of high internal consistency have significant impact on the recent phase shift solution SAID SP99, in particular, on the spin triplet phase shifts between 1000 and 1800 MeV, and demonstrate the limited predictive power of single-energy phase shift solutions at these energies.

Excitation functions of proton-proton elastic scattering cross sections have been measured in narrow steps for projectile momenta pp (energies Tp) from 1100 to 3300MeV/c (500 to 2500 MeV) in the angular range 35°≤Θc.m.≤90° with a detector providing ΔΘc.m.≈1.4° resolution. Measurements have been performed continuously during projectile acceleration in the cooler synchrotron COSY with an internal CH2 fiber target, taking particular care to monitor luminosity as a function of Tp. The advantages of this experimental technique are demonstrated, and the excitation functions obtained are compared to existing cross section data. No evidence for narrow structures was found.

We report measurements of the proton form factors GEp and GMp extracted from elastic scattering in the range 1≤Q2≤3 (GeV/c)2 with total uncertainties < 15% in GEp and < 3% in GMp. Comparisons are made to theoretical models, including those based on perturbative QCD, vector-meson dominance, QCD sum rules, and diquark constituents in the proton. The results for GEp are somewhat larger than indicated by most theoretical parametrizations, and the ratios of the Pauli and Dirac form factors Q2(F2pF1p) are lower in value and demonstrate a weaker Q2 dependence than those predictions. A global extraction of the elastic form factors from several experiments in the range 0.1 0.1<Q2<10 (GeV/c)2 is also presented.
Point-to-point systematic uncertainty is 0.5%, overall normailzation uncertainty is 1.9%.

Quasielastic e-d cross sections have been measured at forward and backward angles. Rosenbluth separations were done to obtain RL and RT at Q2=1.75, 2.50, 3.25, and 4.00 (GeV/c)2. The neutron form factors GEn and GMn have been extracted using a nonrelativistic model. The sensitivity to deuteron wave function, relativistic corrections, and models of the inelastic background are reported. The results for GMn are consistent with the dipole form, while GEn is consistent with zero. Comparisons are made to theoretical models based on vector meson dominance, perturbative QCD, and QCD sum rules, as well as constituent quarks.

The proton elastic electric and magnetic form factors, GEp(Q2) and GMp(Q2), have been separately measured in the range Q2=1.75 to 8.83 (GeV/c)2, more than doubling the Q2 range of previous data. Scaled by the dipole fit, GD(Q2), the results for GMp(Q2)/μpGD(Q2) decrease smoothly from 1.05 to 0.91, while GEp(Q2)/GD(Q2) is consistent with unity. Comparisons are made to QCD sum rule, diquark, constitutent quark, and vector meson dominance models, none of which agree with all of the new data. The ratio Q2F2/F1 approaches a constant value for Q2>3 (GeV/c)2.

The energy dependence of the pp elastic analyzing power has been measured using an internal target during polarized beam acceleration. The data were obtained in incident-energy steps varying from 4 to 17 MeV over an energy range from 0.5 to 2.0 GeV. The statistical uncertainty of the analyzing power is typically less than 0.01. A narrow structure is observed around 2.17 GeV in the two-proton invariant mass distribution. A possible explanation for the structure with narrow resonances is discussed.

Measurements of the semileptonic weak-neutral-current reactions νμp→νμp and ν¯μp→ν¯μp are presented. The experiment was performed using a 170-metric-ton high-resolution target detector in the BNL wide-band neutrino beam. High-statistics samples yield the absolute differential cross sections dσ(νμp)/dQ2 and dσ(ν¯μp)/dQ2. A measurement of the axial-vector form factor GA(Q2) is also presented. The results are in good agreement with the standard model SU(2)×U(1). The weak-neutral-current parameter sin2thetaW is determined to be sin2θW=0.220±0.016(stat)−0.031+0.023(syst).
Errors contain both statistics and systematics, except for additional overall normalisation error given above. Neutrino energy is 0 to 5 GeV with peak at 0.8 Gev.
The total cross section difference Δα L (pp) for proton-proton scattering with beam and target polarized longitudinally parallel and antiparallel, respectively, has been measured using the polarized proton beam from SATURNE II and a frozen spin polarized proton target. The beam polarization was reversed from pulse to pulse, and at each energy Δα L was measured for both signs of target polarization. The data below 800 MeV confirm the previously observed structures. The cross section difference is found to change by 8.0 ± 0.5 mb between 520 MeV and 760 MeV. At the higher energies the results show no indication for similar structures or for a change of the sign of Δα L .

Recent data are presented on spin-spin correlation parameters CLL=(L,L;0,0) and CSL=(S,L;0,0) at forward angles from 1.18 to 2.47 GeV/c incident momenta in proton-proton elastic scattering. Values for ΔσL (inelastic) are derived and are shown to disagree with predictions of theoretical models attempting to describe p−p scattering without dibaryon resonances. Finally, the CLL and CSL data discriminate among various phase-shift solutions, and will lead to a clarification of the p−p phase shifts.

Elastic scattering of p¯ on p has been studied for cosθc.m. between -0.88 and -1.0 and Plab(p¯) between 0.70 and 2.16 GeV/c. The momentum dependence of the cross section shows a sharp dip at 0.9 GeV/c and a broad peaking around 1.4 GeV/c. The possibility of the peak resulting from direct formation of boson resonances has been studied. Proton Compton scattering has been measured in a coincidence experiment at photon energies between 2.2 and 7 GeV and four-momentum transfers t between −0.06 and −0.85(GeV/ c ) 2 . For ∣ t ∣ ⩽ 0.4 (GeV/ c ) 2 fits of the form d σ /d t = ( A · exp( Bt )) yield forward cross sections A in good agreement with the values calculated from the total hadronic γ p cross section via the optical theorem and the forward dispersion relation. The slopes B do not show a significant energy dependence, the mean value being 5.7 ± 0.4 (GeV/ c ) −2 . The cross section is substantially larger than predicted by the vector-meson dominance model.

The total cross section of γ rays in hydrogen resulting in hadron production, σT, has been measured over the energy range 265-4215 MeV. A tagging system with narrow energy bins was employed. Structure in the resonance region followed by a steady fall with energy has been observed and the results are analyzed. The forward amplitude of γ-proton scattering is evaluated, and its behavior in the Argand diagram studied as a function of energy. The total cross section for photoproduction of hadrons on the deutron, σ T d , has been measured for photon energies in the range 0.265–40215 GeV. From this, using results for the photon total cross section, obtained previously with the same apparatus, the neutron total cross section has been determined in the resonance region. The resonant structure is found to be quite different from that for the proton. Thereafter the neutron cross section falls off steadily with energy, and the values obtained are consistently lower than those for the proton. Forward scattering amplitudes have been evaluated for the deuteron.

Results are presented on the elastic scattering of photons by protons. The incident photon energy ranged from 0.55 GeV to 4.5 GeV, and the four-momentum transfer t ranged from 0.12 to 1.0 (GeV/c)2. The data at large angles, 60°<θ*<115°, are characterized by a pronounced excitation of the D13(1518) resonance, a shoulder in the 1688-MeV mass region, and a precipitous drop thereafter in the cross section as a function of incident energy. The low-t data are characterized by a diffraction slope of 5 (GeV/c)−2. The data are inconsistent with the predictions of the vector-dominance model if the latter is restricted to ρ0, ω, and φ vector mesons.

The data have been analysed in relation to the three known structures at c.m. N N energies of 2190, 2350 and 2375 MeV. The data suggest that four- and six-pion annihilations of antiprotons on neutrons may be the source of the 2350 MeV effect. The polarization parameter in π±p elastic scattering has been measured at several momenta in the range 2.50-5.15 GeV/c pion laboratory momentum and covering the range in t approximately from -0.2 to -2.0(GeV/c)2. The data show positive polarization for π±p scattering, having a dip near t=−0.6 (GeV/c)2 and becoming relatively large at greater values of −t. The results for π+ and π− scattering are approximately equal in magnitude but of opposite sign. Final results are presented of the analysis of the elastic channel in an exposure of 40 000 pictures at each of the four incident K + momenta 2.11, 2.31, 2.5 and 2.72 GeV/ c taken in the 1.5 m British National Hydrogen Bubble Chamber at the 8 GeV/ c proton synchrotron at the Rutherford High Energy Laboratory. The backward angular distributions obtained in an experiment at the Zero Gradient Synchrotron of Argonne National Laboratory were used to systematically study the energy dependence of the 180° differential cross section for π+p elastic scattering in the center-of-mass energy region from 2159 to 3487 MeV. At each of 38 incident pion momenta between 2.0 and 6.0 GeV/c, a focusing spectrometer and scintillation counter hodoscopes were used to obtain differential cross sections for typically five pion scattering angles from 141° to 173° in the laboratory. Values for dσdΩ at 180° were then obtained by extrapolation. A resonance model and an interference model were used to perform fits to the energy dependence of dσdΩ (180°). Both models led to good fits to our data and yielded values for the masses, widths, parities, and the product of spin and elasticity for the Δ(2200), Δ(2420), Δ(2850), and Δ(3230) resonances. Our data confirm the existence of the Δ(3230) and require the negative-parity Δ(2200).

Interference effects between the Coulomb and the nuclear amplitudes are used to derive the ratio of the real to imaginary part of the forward nuclear amplitude. Results of a spark chamber experiment on elastic scattering of pions on protons are presented and analyzed. The processes studied were π+p at 2.92 GeV/c, and π−p at 3.15, 4.13, and 4.95 GeV/c. The data are fitted to an exponential function of the four-momentum transfer, t, in several different ways in attempts to explore systematic energy and angular dependences. No shrinkage of the diffraction peak is seen in comparing the coefficients of a linear exponential fit for |t|<0.4 (GeV/c)2; at larger |t|, however, the cross section falls off with increasing energy. The large-angle differential cross section is examined for structure and is compared with all other large angle scattering data. The results are compared with proton-proton scattering data over the same energy range and substantial differences between the two processes are evident.

We present a series of numerical and statistical techniques for interpolating and combining ("amalgamating") data from meson-nucleon scattering experiments. These techniques have been extensively applied to πp elastic and charge-exchange differential-cross-section and polarization data in the resonance region. The amalgamation is done by fitting a momentum- and angle-dependent interpolating surface to the data over a moderately narrow momentum range, typically ∼150 MeV/c, using the interpolating surface to shift data in a narrower central momentum region into fixed angular bins at a predetermined central momentum, and then statistically combining the data in each bin. The fitting procedure takes into account normalization errors, momentum calibration errors, momentum resolution, electromagnetic corrections, threshold structure, and inconsistencies among the data. The full covariance matrix of the amalgamated data is calculated, including contributions of statistical error, systematic error, and interpolation error. Techniques are presented for extracting from the covariance matrix information on the collective statistical fluctuations which correlate the errors of the amalgamated data. These fluctuations are described in terms of "correlation vectors" which facilitate the use of the amalgamated data as input for resonance-region phenomenology.
