The inclusive cross sections for the production of high transverse momentum π + and π − mesons in proton-proton interactions have been measured at the highest ISR energy √ s = 63 GeV and at a c.m. production angle of 50°. The cross sections for π + and π − mesons are compared as a function of transverse momentum. It is shown that the inclusive cross section of π − mesons decreases faster than the π + cross section. particle σ ( π ± )/ σ (charged particles) are presented as a function of transverse momentum.

The first observation of (anti)deuterons in deep inelastic scattering at HERA has been made with the ZEUS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 300--318 GeV using an integrated luminosity of 120 pb-1. The measurement was performed in the central rapidity region for transverse momentum per unit of mass in the range 0.3<p_T/M<0.7. The particle rates have been extracted and interpreted in terms of the coalescence model. The (anti)deuteron production yield is smaller than the (anti)proton yield by approximately three orders of magnitude, consistent with the world measurements.

Measurements of the production of high transverse momentum direct photons by a 515 GeV/c piminus beam and 530 and 800 GeV/c proton beams in interactions with beryllium and hydrogen targets are presented. The data span the kinematic ranges of 3.5 < p_T < 12 GeV/c in transverse momentum and 1.5 units in rapidity. The inclusive direct-photon cross sections are compared with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations and expectations based on a phenomenological parton-k_T model.

K+ meson production in pA (A = C, Cu, Au) collisions has been studied using the ANKE spectrometer at an internal target position of the COSY-Juelich accelerator. The complete momentum spectrum of kaons emitted at forward angles, theta < 12 degrees, has been measured for a beam energy of T(p)=1.0 GeV, far below the free NN threshold of 1.58 GeV. The spectrum does not follow a thermal distribution at low kaon momenta and the larger momenta reflect a high degree of collectivity in the target nucleus.

Data on inclusive jet production in the transverse-momentum (p⊥) range 0-8 GeV/c for 200-GeV/c p, π−, π+, K−, K+, and p¯ incident on a hydrogen target are presented. The jet cross section is fully corrected for losses and biases, and compared with the predictions of a model based on quantum chromodynamics. We present results from an experiment studying the production of single particles and jets (groups of particles) with high p ⊥ (transverse momentum) in 200 GeV/ c interactions on a beryllium target. We give a detailed discussion of the ambiguities in the jet definition. The jet and single-particle cross sections have a similar shape but the jet cross section is over two orders of magnitude larger. The events show evidence for the coplanar structure suggested by constituent models, and the momentum distributions of charged particles give strong support to a simple quark-quark scattering model.

The reaction K + p → p + X is studied at a beam momentum of 16 GeV/ c using the events where a slow proton with momentum p lab < 1.2 GeV/ c is identified by its bubble density. The inclusive spectra presented and compared with those obtained in K + p interactions at 32 GeV/ c and K − p interactions at 14.3 GeV/ c . The prominent features associated with a triple-Regge formula are found to be consistent with the data. It is shown that the Δ ++ (1236) production strongly affects the shape of the inclusive spectra and the results of the triple-Regge fit. After removal of events associated with Δ ++ (1236) production, the data are consistent with the dominance of an ffR coupling.

The production and properties of high transverse momentum hadron jets have been measured in the UA2 experiment at the CERN\(\bar pp\) Collider\((\sqrt s= 540 GEV)\) using a highly segmented total absorption calorimeter. The characteristics of a sample of two-jet events with invariant mass up to 200 GeV/c2 are discussed, including measurements of their fragmentation properties, angular and rapidity distributions, and the properties of the additional energy clusters accompanying the two-jet system. Cross sections for inclusive jet production in the jet transverse momentum range between 30 and 100 GeV/c and for the two-jet invariant mass distribution in the mass range from 60–200 GeV/c2 are reported.

Measurements of inclusive cross sections at 100 GeV/c are presented for the double-charge-exchange reactions a+p→π−X with a=π, K, or p. The measurements covered a kinematic range in the Feynman x variable of 0.3<~x<~0.9 at transverse momenta of 0.3 and 0.5 GeV/c. A model summing the contributions from resonance production and from inclusive central-region π− production is used to fit the data and demonstrates the importance of resonance production via one-pion exchange for large values of the Feynman x.

The invariant cross section for the inclusive production of π+, π−, K+, K−, p, and p¯ is presented for proton-nucleon interactions at plab=28.5 GeV/c. Beryllium, titanium, and tungsten targets were used and the yields were extrapolated to A=1 using the power law σ∼Aα. The exponent α increases with pT, except for protons. We have measured large-transverse-momentum (p⊥) inclusive π0 production at c.m. angles centered near 90° for π±p and pp interactions at 100 and 200 GeV/c. This is the first such measurement using a pion beam. The ratio σ(pp→π0X)σ(πp→π0X) decreases with increasing p⊥ and is independent of energy when expressed as a function of x⊥=p⊥pmax. We compare the data with predictions of various models.

Data are presented on the inclusive production of π±, K±, p, and p¯ for π+, K+, and protons incident on nuclear targets at 100 GeV. The results cover the kinematic range 30≤P≤88 GeV/c for Pt=0.3 and 0.5 GeV/c. The observed A dependence of the invariant cross sections exhibits remarkable simplicity, which does not naturally follow from current models of particle production. The results show that the hypothesis of limiting fragmentation can be extended to include collisions with nuclei.

Measurements of recognized π0 production in p-Be collisions for 0.1<X⊥<0.5 and −0.8<XF<0.0 at 200, 300, and 400 GeV/c are presented. These invariant cross sections are fitted by Edσdp3=A(1−XR)MP⊥−N over this range of X⊥ and XF with M=4.88±0.14 and N=8.90±0.10 independent of energy. No significant evidence for breaking of this scaling is observed over this large kinematic region at these energies.

The inclusive production of neutral kaons in 70 GeV/ c K + p interactions is studied with the CERN BEBC bubble chamber. The (semi-)inclusive cross sections are interpreted in terms of the various strangeness channels leading to neutral kaon production. The invariant inclusive cross section for kaon production is studied as a function of p t 2 and the Feynman variable x . The latter distributions are considered both “raw” and corrected for the presence of K 0 's resulting from K ∗ decay. They are compared with the predictions expected from the Regge-Mueller formalism, the recombination model and fragmentation models.

Production of ϱ 0 , K ∗0 , K ∗0 , and φ have been measured in proton-proton collisions at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) at low p T in the central region. The transverse mass spectra are well described by exp (− aμ T ), with a = −6.4±0.2 GeV −1 . The production of charged hadrons with high p T in αα collisions at √ s =126 GeV and pp collisions at √ s =31 and 63 GeV is compared, and the structure of the events associated with the high- p T particles is studied. The probability of finding associated particles close to the trigger particle increases strongly between √ s =31 and 63 GeV for pp collisions. For p T >2.5GeV/ c the αα/pp cross section ratio at the same energy per nucleon is measured to be 18.7 ± 2.0, to be compared with A 2 = 16, and a higher associated multiplicity is observed for αα.
FIRST PP DATA IS AT SQRT(S)=31 AND THE SECOND PP DATA IS AT 63 GEV.
We present a study of the transverse momentum spectrum of π 0 's produced at c.m. angles θ = 90° and 53° in pp collisions at √ s = 23.6, 30.8, 45.1, 53.2, and 62.9 GeV. The experiment was performed with a lead-glass detector. The data can be described with the usual parametrization p T −n ƒ;(x T , θ) , with n = 7.2 ± 0.2. Comparison between the 90° and 53° data further indicates no appreciable dependence on θ , at least for x T < 0.3. Two-particle inclusive cross sections for π 0 's produced alongside are also presented. They are observed to have a dependence upon the transverse momentum of the dipion similar to that of single-particle cross sections and with the same value of n . Two-photon decays of η mesons are observed between 3 and 4 GeV/ c transverse momentum with a production cross section half of that of π 0 .

The inclusive production of charged hadrons has been measured in αα and αp collisions at nucleon-nucleon c.m. energies (√s nn )of 31 and 44 GeV, respectively, for transverse momenta p T up to 5 GeV/ c in the central rapidity ( y ) region. at high p T the yields are consistent with being 4 times and 16 times highere than the ones in pp interactions at y =0, for αp and αα interactions, respectively. However, an enhancement over these factors, as expected from an earlier FNAL experiment, cannot be ruled out.

We present data obtained from a 1.7 sr hadron calorimeter, triggered on transverse energy, in pp collisions at s =63 GeV at the CERN-ISR. From the change in the distribution of energy in the calorimeter, we extract the cross section for two-constituent hard scattering for p T between 6 and 14 GeV at y = 0. The decrease of this jet cross section over this p T range is consistent with exp (− bp T ), with b = (1.02 ± 0.09) GeV −1 . The slope and normalization of the cross section agree well with a QCD motivated Monte Carlo model. The ratio between jet and single particle cross sections [ dσ JET / dp T )/( dσ π 0 / dp T )]| y = 0 changes from about 200 at 6 GeV to about 1500 at 14 GeV.

We have measured transverse momentum spectra up to 10 GeV/ c for charged particles produced centrally in proton-antiproton collisions at 540 GeV in the centre of mass at the CERN collider.
