The inclusive cross sections for the production of high transverse momentum π + and π − mesons in proton-proton interactions have been measured at the highest ISR energy √ s = 63 GeV and at a c.m. production angle of 50°. The cross sections for π + and π − mesons are compared as a function of transverse momentum. It is shown that the inclusive cross section of π − mesons decreases faster than the π + cross section. particle σ ( π ± )/ σ (charged particles) are presented as a function of transverse momentum.

The first observation of (anti)deuterons in deep inelastic scattering at HERA has been made with the ZEUS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 300--318 GeV using an integrated luminosity of 120 pb-1. The measurement was performed in the central rapidity region for transverse momentum per unit of mass in the range 0.3<p_T/M<0.7. The particle rates have been extracted and interpreted in terms of the coalescence model. The (anti)deuteron production yield is smaller than the (anti)proton yield by approximately three orders of magnitude, consistent with the world measurements.

Measurements of the production of high transverse momentum direct photons by a 515 GeV/c piminus beam and 530 and 800 GeV/c proton beams in interactions with beryllium and hydrogen targets are presented. The data span the kinematic ranges of 3.5 < p_T < 12 GeV/c in transverse momentum and 1.5 units in rapidity. The inclusive direct-photon cross sections are compared with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations and expectations based on a phenomenological parton-k_T model.

K+ meson production in pA (A = C, Cu, Au) collisions has been studied using the ANKE spectrometer at an internal target position of the COSY-Juelich accelerator. The complete momentum spectrum of kaons emitted at forward angles, theta < 12 degrees, has been measured for a beam energy of T(p)=1.0 GeV, far below the free NN threshold of 1.58 GeV. The spectrum does not follow a thermal distribution at low kaon momenta and the larger momenta reflect a high degree of collectivity in the target nucleus.

The production of antineutrons and charged Σ's in e+e− annihilations has been measured at s=4 and 7 GeV and at the ψ(3.1) resonance. Two packages containing spark chambers, steel plates, and scintillation counters were added to each side of the Mark I detector at SPEAR. Antineutrons were identified by annihilations which produced large-angle charged prongs characteristic of a high-Q reaction. The resulting antineutron cross sections and momentum distributions are consistent with previous antiproton results. Charged Σ's were detected by forming mass combinations with the n's and charged tracks in the Mark I. A clear signal is seen in the 7-GeV and ψ data, with little or no signal at s=4 GeV. The increase in Σ± production between 4 and 7 GeV is consistent with simple expectations for charmed-baryon production. A search for the decays Λc−→Σ±π∓π− and Σc*Σc→Λc−π± yields no significant peaks. An upper limit, at the 90% confidence level, of σΛcB(Λc→Σ±π∓π−)<56 pb is set.

Measurements are presented of the inclusive π 0 production cross section, in the transverse momentum range 2.3 ⪅ p T ⪅4.5 GeV/c, for dd and dp interactions at total c.m. energies of √ s = 52.7 GeV and √ s = 63.2 GeV and for pp interactions at √ s = 52.7 GeV. The produced π 0 's are detected by identifying both protons from the decay π 0 → γγ . As in pp interactions, the data can be adequately described by a p T −n ƒ(x T ) dependence with n ≌ 8 . The data are approximately consistent with the expectations of free nucleon scattering. No significant differenceare observed in either the charged or the neutral particle distributions associated with π 0 , for dd, dp and pp interactions.

Inclusive π 0 production at 90° has been studied at the ISR at s 1 2 = 52.7 and 62.4 GeV over the p T range from 7 to 15 GeV/ c . The two photons from π 0 decay yielded overlapping electromagnetic showers in the liquid-argon-Pb plate calorimeter detector system. Any direct photon production is included in these measurements. For large values of p T , the cross section is observed to decrease with p T more slowly than the p T −8 behaviour which has been observed at lower values of p T .

The production and properties of high transverse momentum hadron jets have been measured in the UA2 experiment at the CERN\(\bar pp\) Collider\((\sqrt s= 540 GEV)\) using a highly segmented total absorption calorimeter. The characteristics of a sample of two-jet events with invariant mass up to 200 GeV/c2 are discussed, including measurements of their fragmentation properties, angular and rapidity distributions, and the properties of the additional energy clusters accompanying the two-jet system. Measurements of inclusive cross sections at 100 GeV/c are presented for the double-charge-exchange reactions a+p→π−X with a=π, K, or p. The measurements covered a kinematic range in the Feynman x variable of 0.3<~x<~0.9 at transverse momenta of 0.3 and 0.5 GeV/c. A model summing the contributions from resonance production and from inclusive central-region π− production is used to fit the data and demonstrates the importance of resonance production via one-pion exchange for large values of the Feynman x.

We have measured the inclusive cross section for the reactions p+n→p+X and π++n→p+X at 100 GeV/c in the kinematic region |t|<1.0 GeV2. The data were obtained from an exposure of the Fermilab 30-in. deuterium-filled bubble chamber to a tagged positively charged beam. The differential cross sections for these reactions are observed to scale in the ratio of the pn and π+n total cross sections and to be consistent with the predictions of a Reggeized one-pion-exchange model.

The authors have measured the inclusive production of direct photons in the transverse momentum (pT) range 2.1-5.0 GeV/c in 200-GeV/c collisions of protons and π+ mesons on a carbon target. A significant yield of direct photons was observed for pT>2.5 GeV/c. The invariant cross section for direct-photon production, when compared with measurements from the CERN intersecting storage rings, can be expressed in terms of pT and xT=2pTs as (42±14)(1−xT)8.1±1.0pT−6.6±0.3 μb/GeV2 for the c.m. energy range from s=19.4 to 63 GeV, and for the xT range from 0.2 to 0.5.

The π0 inclusive cross section for c.m. production angles θ=90° and 22°>~θ>~5° at c.m. energies of s=23 and 53 GeV has been measured. This cross section is strongly dependent on both θ and s at small angles. The hypothesis of radial scaling is shown to be incapable of incorporating both θ and s dependence of the cross section. A full description of the apparatus and methods used in the analysis of this series of measurements is given. Data are presented on the inclusive production of π±, K±, p, and p¯ for π+, K+, and protons incident on nuclear targets at 100 GeV. The results cover the kinematic range 30≤P≤88 GeV/c for Pt=0.3 and 0.5 GeV/c. The observed A dependence of the invariant cross sections exhibits remarkable simplicity, which does not naturally follow from current models of particle production. The results show that the hypothesis of limiting fragmentation can be extended to include collisions with nuclei.

We have measured the forward production spectra of various neutral particles produced by π−, K−, p¯, and p at 200 GeV/c, and by π− at 290 GeV/c incident on a Be target. The salient features of these measurements are (1) copious production of KSo at large Feynman xL for incident π− and K−, (2) production of roughly equal fluxes of Λ0 and Λ¯0 for incident π−, and (3) close similarity of the following spectra: π−→n and K−→Λ0; π−→Λ0, π−→Λ¯0, and p→KS0; π−→KS0 and p→Λ0. The overall features of the various distributions seem to agree with the ideas of dimensional counting presented in the constituent-interchange model of quark collisions. Results are presented in terms of the invariant cross section Ed3σ(xL, PT=0)dp3 per Be nucleus for each inclusive reaction.

A neutral beam designed to transmit a high flux of Λ0 hyperons with momenta above 50 GeV/c has been built and operated at Fermilab. Inclusive production cross sections per target nucleus have been measured for p+A→Λ0+X, p+A→KS0+X, and p+A→Λ¯0+X with 300-GeV protons incident on solid targets A=berylium,copper,andlead. The region of phase space covered is predominantly projectile fragmentation: 0.2<~x<~1, 0<~p⊥<~2 GeV/c. The A dependence of the inclusive cross sections is analyzed. The cross sections are compared to other work in pp collisions by extrapolating the A dependence to A=1. The results of measurements of Λ0 and Λ¯0 polarization from the beryllium target are presented.
