The inclusive cross sections for the production of high transverse momentum π + and π − mesons in proton-proton interactions have been measured at the highest ISR energy √ s = 63 GeV and at a c.m. production angle of 50°. The cross sections for π + and π − mesons are compared as a function of transverse momentum. It is shown that the inclusive cross section of π − mesons decreases faster than the π + cross section. particle σ ( π ± )/ σ (charged particles) are presented as a function of transverse momentum.

The first observation of (anti)deuterons in deep inelastic scattering at HERA has been made with the ZEUS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 300--318 GeV using an integrated luminosity of 120 pb-1. The measurement was performed in the central rapidity region for transverse momentum per unit of mass in the range 0.3<p_T/M<0.7. The particle rates have been extracted and interpreted in terms of the coalescence model. The (anti)deuteron production yield is smaller than the (anti)proton yield by approximately three orders of magnitude, consistent with the world measurements.

K+ meson production in pA (A = C, Cu, Au) collisions has been studied using the ANKE spectrometer at an internal target position of the COSY-Juelich accelerator. The complete momentum spectrum of kaons emitted at forward angles, theta < 12 degrees, has been measured for a beam energy of T(p)=1.0 GeV, far below the free NN threshold of 1.58 GeV. The spectrum does not follow a thermal distribution at low kaon momenta and the larger momenta reflect a high degree of collectivity in the target nucleus.

Measurements are presented of the inclusive π 0 production cross section, in the transverse momentum range 2.3 ⪅ p T ⪅4.5 GeV/c, for dd and dp interactions at total c.m. energies of √ s = 52.7 GeV and √ s = 63.2 GeV and for pp interactions at √ s = 52.7 GeV. The produced π 0 's are detected by identifying both protons from the decay π 0 → γγ . As in pp interactions, the data can be adequately described by a p T −n ƒ(x T ) dependence with n ≌ 8 . The data are approximately consistent with the expectations of free nucleon scattering. No significant differenceare observed in either the charged or the neutral particle distributions associated with π 0 , for dd, dp and pp interactions.

We present results from an experiment studying the production of single particles and jets (groups of particles) with high p ⊥ (transverse momentum) in 200 GeV/ c interactions on a beryllium target. We give a detailed discussion of the ambiguities in the jet definition. The jet and single-particle cross sections have a similar shape but the jet cross section is over two orders of magnitude larger. The events show evidence for the coplanar structure suggested by constituent models, and the momentum distributions of charged particles give strong support to a simple quark-quark scattering model.

The inclusive production of low-momentum charged pions, kaons, and protons has been measured at x = 0 over the ISR energy range 23 < √ s < 63 GeV. The average increase in the invariant differential cross section is 36 ± 2% for π + , 41 ± 2% for π − , 52 ± 8% for K + , 69 ± 8% for K − , 8 ± 5% for p, and 84 ± for p ̄ . As part of a study of large p T phenomena in photon-proton collisions at the CERN ISR, a search for direct single photon production has been performed. A statistical division of the data sample into the fraction consistent with single photon and the fraction due to multiphoton decays of neutral hadrons is accomplished by measuring the average conversion probability for the sample in a one radiation length thick converter. The fraction of the sample attributable to direct single photon production is 〈 γ /all〉 = 0.074 ± 0.012 for 6 GeV/ c < p T 10 GeV/ c , and 〈 γ /all〉 = 0.26 ± 0.04 for p T > 10 GeV/ c , with an additional systematic uncertainty of ±0.05 for both values.

The inclusive cross section for larger p T π 0 production near 90° in p-p collisions at the CERN ISR is presented for centre-of-mass energies 30.7, 53.1 and 62.4 GeV. The data are inconsistent with scaling of the form p T − n F ( x T ), with constant n or with n allowed to depend on x T = 2p T / s . For s = 53.1 and 62.4 GeV , the value of n found for 3.5 < p T < 7.0 GeV/ c is n = 8.0 ± 0.5, in agreement with previous experiments. However, for 7.5 < p T < 14.0 GeV/ c the value becomes n = 5.1 ± 0.4.

The production and properties of high transverse momentum hadron jets have been measured in the UA2 experiment at the CERN\(\bar pp\) Collider\((\sqrt s= 540 GEV)\) using a highly segmented total absorption calorimeter. The characteristics of a sample of two-jet events with invariant mass up to 200 GeV/c2 are discussed, including measurements of their fragmentation properties, angular and rapidity distributions, and the properties of the additional energy clusters accompanying the two-jet system. Cross sections for inclusive jet production in the jet transverse momentum range between 30 and 100 GeV/c and for the two-jet invariant mass distribution in the mass range from 60–200 GeV/c2 are reported.

We have measured the inclusive cross section for the reactions p+n→p+X and π++n→p+X at 100 GeV/c in the kinematic region |t|<1.0 GeV2. The data were obtained from an exposure of the Fermilab 30-in. deuterium-filled bubble chamber to a tagged positively charged beam. The differential cross sections for these reactions are observed to scale in the ratio of the pn and π+n total cross sections and to be consistent with the predictions of a Reggeized one-pion-exchange model.

We report the 24-GeV/c inclusive π− yield near θc.m.=90° for 0.5<~PT≲2.2 GeV/c. No high-PT excess is seen at this energy. In addition we have obtained the inclusive γ-ray yield from a measurement of low-mass e+e− pairs. This yield is compared with that expected from π0-, η-, and ω-meson decay, to provide limits on possible direct photon production.

We have measured large-transverse-momentum (p⊥) inclusive π0 production at c.m. angles centered near 90° for π±p and pp interactions at 100 and 200 GeV/c. This is the first such measurement using a pion beam. The ratio σ(pp→π0X)σ(πp→π0X) decreases with increasing p⊥ and is independent of energy when expressed as a function of x⊥=p⊥pmax. We compare the data with predictions of various models.

The π0 inclusive cross section for c.m. production angles θ=90° and 22°>~θ>~5° at c.m. energies of s=23 and 53 GeV has been measured. This cross section is strongly dependent on both θ and s at small angles. The hypothesis of radial scaling is shown to be incapable of incorporating both θ and s dependence of the cross section. We report measurements of the inclusive π− and π+ yields in 24-GeV proton-proton collisions at θc.m.=90° for 2.2≤PT≤2.8 GeV/c. There is a high-PT deficit, rather than excess, at this incident energy.

Total cross sections, and differential cross sections in terms of Feynman x , rapidity and p T 2 are given. It is found that about 40% of K n 's are produced together with a strange particle pair, and that 80% of Λ 0 's are produced together with a K K pair. These Λ 0, 's are produced predominantly in the backward direction. Fits to the form (1−| x |) n to the x F distributions of K n and Λ 0 in the fragmentation regions are found to be in general agreement with quark counting rule predictions.

The inclusive production of neutral kaons in 70 GeV/ c K + p interactions is studied with the CERN BEBC bubble chamber. The (semi-)inclusive cross sections are interpreted in terms of the various strangeness channels leading to neutral kaon production. The invariant inclusive cross section for kaon production is studied as a function of p t 2 and the Feynman variable x . The latter distributions are considered both “raw” and corrected for the presence of K 0 's resulting from K ∗ decay. They are compared with the predictions expected from the Regge-Mueller formalism, the recombination model and fragmentation models.

Production of ϱ 0 , K ∗0 , K ∗0 , and φ have been measured in proton-proton collisions at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) at low p T in the central region. The transverse mass spectra are well described by exp (− aμ T ), with a = −6.4±0.2 GeV −1 . The production of charged hadrons with high p T in αα collisions at √ s =126 GeV and pp collisions at √ s =31 and 63 GeV is compared, and the structure of the events associated with the high- p T particles is studied. The probability of finding associated particles close to the trigger particle increases strongly between √ s =31 and 63 GeV for pp collisions. For p T >2.5GeV/ c the αα/pp cross section ratio at the same energy per nucleon is measured to be 18.7 ± 2.0, to be compared with A 2 = 16, and a higher associated multiplicity is observed for αα.
