The depolarization parameter Donon of the p dash p → n dash n charge exchange reaction has been measured for the first time at the CERN Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at two antiproton momenta, 546 and 875 MeV/ c . The transverse polarization of the recoil neutron was analyzed using a large-acceptance neutron polarimeter made up of two parallel plastic scintillator planes. D 0 n 0 n is usually less than 0.35 which suggests that the spin-spin amplitudes dominate in the scattering matrix. Results are compared with the predictions of various N dash N potential models. The agreement is in general satisfactory.

The invariant double-differential cross section, E 1 E 2 d 6 σ / d p 3 1 d p 3 2 , and the double-spin asymmetry, A LL , for inclusive multi-γ pair production in which γ-rays came from neutral mesons were measured with a 200 GeV / c longitudinally-polarized proton beam and a longitudinally-polarized proton target. Most of the multi-γ pairs comes from two-jet type events which are sensitive to partonic interaction. The A LL values were found to be consistent with zero. The invariant double-differential cross section for inclusive π 0 π 0 production was also measured. These measured cross sections are consistent with LUND Monte Carlo simulations. Using the LUND Monte Carlo simulation package with the Carlitz-Kaur model of spin dependent distribution functions of valence quarks, the A LL values have been compared with theoretical predictions of gluon polarization, ΔG / G . The results put restrictions on the size of ΔG / G in the region of 0.05 ⪅ x ⪅ 0.35.

We present a total of 191 and 203 data points of the elastic neutron-protonspin correlation parameters A ookk and A oosk , respectively. Both observables were measured in a large angular interval. The observable A ookk was measured from 0.312 to 1.10 GeV and A oosk from 0.80 to 1.10 GeV. The SATURNE II polarized beam of free neutrons obtained from the break-up of polarized deuterons was scattered on the polarized Saclay frozen-spin proton target. The beam polarization was oriented either along the beam direction or sideways, the target polarization was oriented longitudinally. Data are compared with phase-shift analyses predictions and with the PSI, LAMPF and SATURNE II results. Both the np and the pp analyzing powers were measured simultaneously using the SATURNE II polarized deuteron beam at 0.550, 0.725, 0.900 and 1.15 GeV/nucleon. The results for the pp analyzing power coincide with the free pp elastic scattering data. We thus can assume that also the np analyzing power is equal to the one for scattering of free polarized neutrons. The np data cover the angular region 90° ≤ θ CM ≤ 125°. Our results for the np analyzing power clarify a discrepancy between earlier data at 0.5 GeV and allow conclusions about the energy dependence of the minimum of polarization at θ CM ⋍ 100° in the region from 0.5 to 0.9 GeV.

We present data of several rescattering observables measured inn p elastic scattering between 0.80 and 1.10 GeV. The SATURNE II polarized beam of free neutrons obtained from the break-up of polarized deuterons was scattered on the Saclay polarized frozen-spin proton target. Three different configurations of beam and target polarization directions were used: the observablesDonon andKonno were measured with the normal-normal spin configuration at eight energies;Nonkk,Dos″ok andKos″ko were determined with the longitudinal-longitudinal configuration at six energies;Nonsk,Dos″ok andKos″so with the sideway-longitudinal configuration at six energies. Part of the data was obtained with an unpolarized CH2 target where only the two spin-index polarization transfer parametersKos″ko andKos″so were determined. Data are compared with phase shift analyses predictions and with the LAMPF results at 0.788 GeV. Present results are the first measurements of rescattering observables above 0.80 GeV. They provide an important contribution to any future theoretical or phenomenological analysis.

The depolarization parameter D 0 n 0 n in the charge-exchange reaction p p ↑→ n n ↑ has been measured for the first time at the CERN Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at 875 MeV/ c antiproton beam momentum, in the forward hemisphere. The spin-rotation parameters A and R and the related spin-rotation angle β have been measured for π+p and π−p elastic scattering using protons polarized in the scattering plane. The pion-beam momenta are 427, 471, 547, 625, and 657 MeV/c and the angular range is −0.9≤cosΘc.m.≤0.3. The scattered pion and recoil proton were detected in coincidence, using a scintillator hodoscope for the pions, and the Large Acceptance Spectrometer combined with the JANUS polarimeter for the recoil protons. The results are compared with the four recent πN partial wave analyses (PWA's). Our data show that the major features of these PWA's are correct. The A and R measurements complete our program of pion-nucleon experiments, providing full data sets at three of the above beam momenta. Such sets can be used to test the constraints in the PWA's or to obtain a model-independent set of πN scattering amplitudes.

Results are presented for the spin-spin correlation parameters CSS and CLS for free np elastic scattering at neutron beam kinetic energies of 484, 634, 720, and 788 MeV and c.m. angles between 25° and 80°. The measurements were performed with a polarized neutron beam and a polarized proton target. These are the first measurements of this type to be reported in the forward angular region with a free polarized neutron beam. The observables CSS and CLS are both small at all energies, except for CLS at 788 MeV, which is larger than phase-shift analysis predictions by more than one standard deviation for most of the measured points.

Analyzing powers ( A y ) and spin-rotation-depolarization parameters ( D SS , D SL , D LS , D LL , D NN ) were determined for 500 MeV p + 2 H and p + 12 C inclusive quasielastic scattering at 10°, 15°, and 20° laboratory scattering angles. The p + 2 H data are consistent with the isospin-average of the proton-proton and proton-neutron scattering observables; the p + 12 C data are not. A relativistic plane wave impulse approximation calculation leads to better agreement with the p + 12 C spin-observables.

The first spin-transfer observables for the πd→pp reaction have been measured at a number of energies spanning the Δ resonance in this system. These parameters correspond to KSL and KSS of the pp→dπ reaction for incident proton energies ranging from 600 to 800 MeV. Such data can provide an important constraint on the determination of the partial-wave amplitudes describing this fundamental reaction. The discrepancies between our data, theoretical predictions, and values calculated from published partial-wave amplitudes demonstrate the need for further work in this area.

The two-spin parameter A LL in inclusive π 0 productionby longitudinally-polarized protons and antiprotons on a longitudinally-polarized proton target has been measured at the 200 GeV Fermilab spin physics facility, for π 0 's at x F =0 with 1⩽ p t ⩽3 GeV/ c . The results exclude, at the 95% confidence level, values of A LL (pp) > 0.1 and < − 0.1 for π 0 's produced by protons, and values of A LL ( p p) > 0.1 and < −0.2 for incident antiprotons. The relevance of A LL (pp) for the gluon spin density is discussed. The data are in good agreement with “conventional”, small or zero, gluon polarization.

The spin asymmetry in deep inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarised muons by longitudinally polarised protons has been measured in the range 0.01<×<0.7. The spin dependent structure function g 1 ( x ) for the proton has been determined and, combining the data with earlier SLAC measurements, its integral over x found to be 0.126±0.010(stat.)±0.015(syst.), in disagreement with the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule. Assuming the validity of the Biorken sum rule, this result implies a significant negative value for the integral of g 1 for the neutron. These integrals lead to the conclusion, in the naïve quark parton model, that the total quark spin constitutes a rather small fraction of the spin of the nucleon. Results are also presented on the asymmetries in inclusive hadron production which are consistent with the above picture.

Angular distributions of the spin-correlation parameters Asl and All for the reaction pp→π+d have been measured at pion center-of-mass angles 40°≤θπ+*≤130° at incident energies of 500, 650, and 800 MeV. Accelerating polarized protons to 22 GeV/c at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchro- tron required both extensive hardware modifications and a difficult commissioning process. We had to overcome 45 strong depolarizing resonances to maintain polarization up to 22 GeV/c in this strong-focusing synchrotron. At 18.5 GeV/c we measured the analyzing power A and the spin-spin correlation parameter Ann in large- P⊥2 proton-proton elastic scattering, using the polarized proton beam and a polarized proton target. We also obtained a high-precision measurement of A at P⊥2=0.3 (GeV/c)2 at 13.3 GeV/c. At 18.5 GeV/c we found that Ann=(-2±16)% at P⊥2=4.7 (GeV/c)2, where it was about 60% near 12 GeV at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron. This sharp change suggests that spin-spin forces may have a strong and unexpected energy dependence at high P⊥2.

The Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron polarized proton beam incident on a beryllium target was used for inclusive Λ production at beam momenta of 13.3 and 18.5 GeV/c. The beam polarization was transverse to the beam direction with magnitude 0.63 at 13.3 GeV/c and 0.40 at 18.5 GeV/c. The Λ polarization was measured and found to be in agreement with results from earlier experiments which used unpolarized proton beams. Analyzing power AN and spin transfer DNN of the Λ’s were both measured and compared with a hyperon-polarization model in which the polarization arises from a Thomas-precession effect. There is good agreement with its predictions: AN=0 and DNN=0. In particular, our measurement of 〈DNN〉=-0.009±0.015 supports the idea that the valence quarks carry all of the hadron spin, since this assumption is implicit in the model’s use of SU(6) wave functions to form final-state hadrons from beam fragments and sea quarks. The presence of substantial KS samples at both beam momenta and Λ¯’s at 18.5 GeV/c prompted a measurement of their analyzing powers, which yielded AN(KS)=-0.094±0.012 at 13.3 GeV/c beam momentum and -0.076±0.015 at 18.5 GeV/c, and AN(Λ¯)=0.03±0.10.

The np and the pp analyzing powers A oono d and spin correlations A oonn d and A oosk d were measured simultaneously using the SATURNE II polarized deuteron beam at 0.744 and 0.794 GeV/nucleon. The results for the pp observables coincide with the free pp elastic scattering data. The np data cover the angular region 95°⩽ θ CM ⩽122°. Our results for A oono d (np) confirm the phase-shift analysis predictions but spin correlations A oonn d (np) and A oosk d (np) have never been measured in this energy region and will considerably affect the PSA solution.
