The inclusive cross sections for forward D meson production at s =26 GeV in π − p interactions have been measured to be: σ(π − p → D 0 / D 0 + X ) x F >0 = (10.1±2.2)μ b , σ(π − p → D ±+ X ) x F >0 = (5.7±1.6)μ b . The distribution in x F for all D and for x F >0 has the form d σ/ d x F =107 −37 +39 (1−x F ) 7.5 −1.7 +2.5 +5.4 −3.8 +6.0 (1−x F ) 0.7 −0.7 1.0 μ b , with evidence for leading D production. The p T 2 distribution is exponential with slope parameter [−1.18 −0.16 +0.18 ]( GeV / c) −2 . The data are compared with predictions from first-order quark/gluon fusion calculations.

From a study of multimuon events obtained in a high luminosity proton-platinum experiment at 400 GeV/ c , we find 5 ± 4 ψψ events, which correspond to a production cross section σ ( ψψ = 27 ± 10 pb. The observed production is compared to the ψψ events previously found in the same apparatus from incoming π − ; a comparison with QCD predictions is performed, giving a good agreement with expectations from gluon-gluon fusion. Finally, using like-sign dimuon, trimuon and quadrimuon events, we give model-dependent upper limits on beauty meson production: 2 nb/nucleon for central models, 20 nb/nucleon for diffractive production.

Results are presented on two-jet and three-jet cross sections, measured in the UA1 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) pp̄ Collider, at the highest available subprocess cms energies ( s ̂ >150 GeV ). Precise measurements of the two-jet angular distribution are consistent with previous results but show significant scale-breaking effects. The three-jet Dalitz plot and the three-jet angular distributions show evidence for final- and initial-state bremsstrahlung processes, in agreement with the leading-order QCD predictions. A comparison of the yield of wide-angle three-jet events with the yield of two-jet events at smaller scattering angles gives for the strong interaction coupling constant: α s ( K 3J K 2J )=0.16±0.02±0.03 at Q 2 ≈4000 GeV 2 , where the factor K 3J K 2J may plausibly be assumed to be close to unity.

We present a study of events with three muons in the final state, produced in π − -tungsten interactions at 194 GeV/ c . Trimuons can be attributed to B-meson pair production, and this allows us to set (model-dependent) upper limits for the corresponding cross section. Assuming a correlated central production model, we obtain the limit of 1.5 nb per nucleon at the 95% confidence level.

A charge hyperon beam has been brought into operation at the CERN SPS. Particles are identified by a DISC Čerenkov counter, and decay products are analysed by a magnetic spectrometer. Cross sections for the inclusive production of π + , K + , p , Σ + , Σ − , ζ − , d, and π − , K − , p , Σ + , Σ − , ζ − , ω − , d in the forward direction have been measured at laboratory momenta between 70 and 130 GeV/ c . This range of momenta corresponds to 0.35 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.66 for an incident proton momentum of 200 GeV/ c . We report the results of an experiment made at the CERN ISR to investigate the possible diret production of single photons in pp collisions at √ s = 53.2 GeV at 90° and in the p t interval 2.3 to 5.7 GeV/ c . The value of the ratio R = n γ / n π 0 is compatible with zero for low p t ⪅ 3 GeV/ c but, in spite of the large error, shows a trend to increase for larger p t .

We report on total cross section and forward backward charge asymmetry measurements of the reactione+e− → τ+τ− at centre of mass energies of 35.0 GeV and 42.4 GeV using the TASSO detector. Including previous data an analysis in terms of electroweak parameters of the standard model is presented, and lower limits on mass scale parameters of residual contact interactions are given. A combined analysis of electroweak couplings using all our results on leptonic reactionse+e−→l+l− has been performed.

The production of electrons with very high transverse momentum has been studied in the UA2 experiment at the CERN\(\bar pp\) collider (\(\sqrt s\)=540 GeV). From a sample of events containing an electron candidate withpT>15 GeV/c, we extract a clear signal resulting from the production of the charged intermediate vector bosonW±, which subsequently decays into an electron and a neutrino. We study theW production and decay properties. Further-more, we refine our results on the production and decay of the neutral vector bosonZ0. Finally, we compare the experimental results to the predictions of the standard model of the unified electro-weak theory.

We present the first results on the production of fast (p>10 GeV/c)p,\(\bar p\), Λ and\(\bar \Lambda \) from π± hydrogen and nucleus interactions at 30 GeV/c using the CERN Ω′ spectrometer. We have used five nuclear targets (C, Al, Cu, Sn, Pb) to study theA-dependence of the inclusive particle distributions in the region 0.3<xF<0.6. The high statistical level of our experiment allows us to demonstrate the differentA-behaviour of baryon and antibaryon inclusive reactions. We relate this difference to the final state interaction inside a nucleus using the formation-zone model.

The inclusive π0 production cross-section and the η/π0 ratio have been measured inpp collisions at\(\sqrt s= 63 GeV\) at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings in the rapidity range 2.00<y<2.75. The π0 cross-section exhibits a strongy-dependence and falls more steeply as a function ofpT, compared with the cross-section measured aty∼0. Nucleon structure functions obtained from neutrino and anti-neutrino scattering on iron nuclei at high energies (Ev=30 to 250 GeV) are presented. Inclusive ϕ-meson production has been measured for 100 GeV/cK−,\(\bar p\) andp incident on a Be target. Differential cross sectionsdσ/dxF anddσ/dp⊥2 are presented in the interval 0.075<xF<0.225 and 0<p⊥<1 GeV/c respectively. The shape of thedσ/dxF distributions agrees with predictions from a quark fusion model. We have measured inelastic electron-deuteron, electron-proton, and electron-aluminum cross sections at 10° in the kinematic region between elastic deuteron scattering and the second resonance region at six beam energies between 9.8 and 21 GeV. The elastic electron-neutron cross section was extracted from the quasielastic data at Q2=2.5,4.0,6.0,8.0, and 10.0 (GeV/c)2. The ratio of elastic cross sections σnσp falls with increasing Q2 above 6 (GeV/c)2. The inelastic data are compatible either with y scaling (scattering from a single nucleon) or with ξ scaling (scattering from quarks).

Inclusive production of ϱ0,f, andg0 mesons and ofKs0,K*0 (892), ϕ andK*0(1430)mesons has been measured at <y>∼2.6 and <pT>∼1.1 GeV/c in proton-proton interactions at\(\sqrt s= 52.5\) GeV. The negative particle from the two-body decays of these resonances were identified by a threshold Cerenkov counter and used for triggering. Starting from the measured differential cross section, total inclusive cross sections for the vector and tensor mesons were determined using various parametrizations for they andpT dependence of the differential cross section. The experimental results are discussed in the framework of production models based on the parton picture. The strangeness suppresion factor λ=(0.30±0.10) due toSU(3) symmetry breaking of the quark sea is derived.

We have studied the inclusive production of strange meson and baryon resonances in 360 GeV/cpp interactions. Cross sections forK*+(892) andK*−(892) are estimated to be 4.42±0.62 mb and 2.54±0.47 mb respectively and those for∑+(1385) and∑−(1385) are 0.67±0.11 mb and 0.26±0.07 mb respectively. We have measured the inclusive cross-section for π0 production at large transverse momentum by 200 GeV/c positive and negative hadron beams on Carbon targets (2.9<PT<6 GeV/c; −0.4<y*<1.2). We used the NA3 spectrometer at the CERNSPS.

We present data on inclusive production ofK+ andKS0 mesons in a 70 GeV/cK+p experiment performed in BEBC filled withH2. The spectra of “prompt” non-diffractiveKS0 are determined by subtraction of the decay products of prominent resonances and diffractive contributions. These data, contrary to the overall inclusive spectra, allow to differentiate between some fragmentation models for soft hadron-hadron interactions.

The relative yields of kaons and protons compared with the yield of pions at highpT and polar angles θ away from 90° (in the range from 10° to 45°) are presented forpp, dd, and αα interactions at a centre-of-mass energy\(\sqrt {s_{NN} }= 31\) GeV per nucleon-nucleon collision. The reactionγγ→3π+3π- has been studied usig the JADE detector at PETRA. The topological cross sectionσ(γγ→3π+3π-) was measured in the CM energy range 1.5–5.5 GeV. The production ofρ0,s was observed and the average number ofρ0,s per event measured. The contributions of the subprocessesγγ→ρ02π+2π-,γγ→ρ0ρ0π+2π- andγγ→ 3π+3π- (phase space) were studied and 95% C.L. upper limits for the cross sectionσ(γγ→ρ0ρ0π+π- determined. Finally the Bose-Einstein correlation for pairs of like signed pions was observed. A fit to a standard parametrization gave results consistent with other studies of this effect in pion systems.
