Photoproduction of pi0 on protons by polarized gamma rays

The asymmetry Σ(k,θ*)=(dσ⊥−dσ∥)(dσ⊥+σ∥) of the polarized cross sections for π0 photoproduction has been measured at θ*=90° for energies k of the incident photon in the range 230-380 MeV. The experiment has been performed with the polarized γ-ray beam of the Frascati 1-GeV electron synchrotron. The experimental results are compared with the present theoretical predictions in order to investigate the importance of ω exchange in the t channel and the contribution of the E1+(3) multipole at the 33 resonance. The theory with ω exchange is in the best agreement with the experiment.

Charged-Pion Photoproduction from Deuterium with Polarized Bremsstrahlung

Measurements have been made on the ratio of pion-production cross sections at right angles to and along the photon electric-field vector. The positive and negative pions were first momentum-analyzed and counted by means of a counter telescope. Data have been taken at 45, 90, and 135° in the c.m. system, and at proton energies of 225, 330, and 450 MeV. A comparison of the data is made with the dispersion-relation calculation of McKinley.

Neutral Meson Production with Polarized X Rays

Measurements of π0 photoproduction have been made at 235, 285, 335, and 435 MeV, using a beam of polarized x rays. Using a calculated value of polarization, an analysis is made which indicates a possible need for γ, ρ, π, or γ, ω, π coupling. The polarization calculations are checked by measurements made as a function of photon production angle at 335 MeV.

Polarized Target Asymmetry in $\pi^+$ Photoproduction Between 0.3-GeV and 1.0-GeV at 130°

The polarized target asymmetry for γ + p → π + + n was measured at c.m. angles around 130° for the energy range between 0.3 and 1.0 GeV. A magnetic spectrometer system was used to detect π + mesons from the polarized butanol target. The data show two prominent positive peaks at 0.4 and 0.8 GeV and a deep minimum at 0.6 GeV. These features are well reproduced by the phenomenological analysis made by us.

POSITIVE PION PRODUCTION BY POLARIZED BREMSSTRAHLUNG

By selecting bremsstrahlung produced in a 0.003-in. aluminum radiator at a small angle from the original electron direction, a beam of polarized bremsstrahlung has been obtained from the Stanford linear accelerator. The variation of the polarization and intensity with angle has been studied and compared with theoretical predictions. The polarized beam has been used to study π+-meson production at 90° c.m. angle and photon energies of 242, 296, 337, and 376 Mev. The ratio of meson production along and at right angles to the electric field vector has been measured and compared with the values predicted by the relativistic dispersion relation.

Radiative decay of the Delta resonance: Analyzing powers for pi- p (polarized) ---> gamma n

The polarized target asymmetry AN for π−p→→γn has been measured by coincident detection of the γ and the neutron at several angles across the Δ resonace energy region. A high-resolution NaI γ spectrometer together with good time-of-flight information for the neutron resulted in excellent separation of this radiative capture reaction from the much higher cross-section charge exchange reaction π−p→→π0n. Statistical uncertainties are ΔAN=0.02-0.04, representing a significant improvement over previous results. The new data are discussed in the context of recent theoretical models.
