A study ofW± andZ0 properties has been performed using the UA2 detector at the\(\bar pp\) collider. The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 142 nb−1 at\(\sqrt s \)=546 GeV, and of 310 nb−1 at\(\sqrt s \)=630 GeV. The experimental results are compared with the predictions of the Standard Model of the unified electroweak theory.

Results are presented on the exclusive production of four-prong final states in photon-photon collisions from the TPC/Two-Gamma detector at the SLAC e+e− storage ring PEP. Measurement of dE/dx and momentum in the time-projection chamber (TPC) provides identification of the final states 2π+2π−, K+K−π+π−, and 2K+2K−. For two quasireal incident photons, both the 2π+2π− and K+K−π+π− cross sections show a steep rise from threshold to a peak value, followed by a decrease at higher mass. Cross sections for the production of the final states ρ0ρ0, ρ0π+π−, and φπ+π− are presented, together with upper limits for φρ0, φφ, and K*0K¯ *0. The ρ0ρ0 contribution dominates the four-pion cross section at low masses, but falls to nearly zero above 2 GeV. Such behavior is inconsistent with expectations from vector dominance but can be accommodated by four-quark resonance models or by t-channel factorization. Angular distributions for the part of the data dominated by ρ0ρ0 final states are consistent with the production of JP=2+ or 0+ resonances but also with isotropic (nonresonant) production. When one of the virtual photons has mass (mγ2=-Q2≠0), the four-pion cross section is still dominated by ρ0ρ0 at low final-state masses Wγγ and by 2π+2π− at higher mass. Further, the dependence of the cross section on Q2 becomes increasingly flat as Wγγ increases.

Using the UA5 detector, the inclusive central production of Ks0 and K± mesons has been measured in non-single-diffractive interactions at the CERN SPS <math altimg="si1.gif"><ovl type="bar" style="s">p</ovl>p</math> Collider at a c.m. energy of 540 GeV. The average transverse momentum is found to be 〈pT〉 = 0.57±0.03 GeV/c in the rapidity range |y|<2.5, which is an increase of about 30% over the top ISR energy. The K/π ratio has increased from about 8% at ISR energies to 9.5±0.9±0.7% (the last error is systematic) at 540 GeV. Results of the first experiments with the Neutral Detector at the electron-positron storage ring VEPP-2M are presented. Branching ratios of the ø-meson radiative decays have been measured: B ( ø → ηγ )=(1.30±0.06)%, B ( ø → π 0 γ )=(0.130±0.013)%, their accuracy being several times higher than the world average. The width ratio is Γ(ø→ηγ) Γ(ø→π 0 γ)=(10±1) . Using the abovementioned quantities, the ω − ø mixing angle θ v =(38.3±0.2) ° , as well as the ratio between the effective magnetic moments of the s- and u-quarks, μ s μ u =(0.57±0.03) have been calculated.

We have measured the production cross-section times branching ratio for J/ψ→μ + μ − in pp̄ interactions at √ s = 630 GeV in the kinematic range |y|<2.0 and p T >5 GeV /c, BR ( J /ψ→μ + μ − )σ( p p ̄ → J /ψ)=6.18±0.24±0.81 nb . The data sample collected in 1988 and 1989 for an integrated luminosity of 4.7 pb −1 represents a fivefold improvement over the statistics in our earlier study of the J / ψ production process, and the p T distribution which is measured extends to 28 GeV / c . Using event topology we show that the rate for the direct production of J / ψ , via radiative decays of χ states, is larger than that for production via B-hadrons. Production of ψ′ is also studied using the decay modes < ψ ′→ μ + μ − and ψ ′→ J / ψπ + ψ − .

The yields and average transverse momenta of pions, kaons, and antiprotons produced at the Fermilab p¯p collider at s=300, 540, 1000, and 1800 GeV are presented and compared with data from the energies reached at the CERN collider. We also present data on the dependence of average transverse momentum 〈pt〉 and particle ratios as a function of charged particle density dNcdη; data for particle densities as high as six times the average value, corresponding to a Bjorken energy density 6 GeV/fm3, are reported. These data are relevant to the search for quark-gluon phase of QCD.

Measurements of inclusive transverse-momentum spectra for KS0 mesons produced in proton-antiproton collisions at s of 630 and 1800 GeV are presented and compared with data taken at lower energies. The ratio, as a function of pT, of the cross section for KS0 to that for charged hadrons is very similar to what is observed at lower energies. At 1800 GeV, we calculate the strangeness-suppression factor λ=0.40±0.05.

Inclusive production of $\mathrm{D^{*\pm}}$ mesons in two-photon collisions was measured by the L3 experiment at LEP. The data were collected at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 189$ GeV with an integrated luminosity of $176.4 \mathrm{pb^{-1}}$. Differential cross sections of the process $\mathrm{e^+e^- \to D^{*\pm} X}$ are determined as functions of the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the $\mathrm{D^{*\pm}}$ mesons in the kinematic region 1 GeV $< p_{T}^{\mathrm{D^*}} < 5 $ GeV and $\mathrm{|\eta^{D^*}|} < 1.4$. The cross section integrated over this phase space domain is measured to be $132 \pm 22(stat.) \pm 26(syst.)$ pb. The differential cross sections are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

We summarize the results obtained in the UA1 experiment on the production of bottom quarks in proton-antiproton collisions at √ s =0.63 TeV. Independent muon data samples are used to determine the bottom quark production cross section in different transverse momentum ranges from 6 to 30 GeV. A recent theoretical calculation to O(α s 3 ) of the inclusive bottom quark transverse momentum spectrum in hadronic collisions shows reasonable agreement with the data. We extrapolate the integral P T distribution to P T =0 and in rapidity to estimate the total cross section forthe production of bottom quark pairs. Assuming the shape in P T and rapidity given by the O(α s 3 ) calcultaion, we obtain σ( p p→b b +X) = 10.2 ±3.3 μb .

New data are presented on the charged multiplicity distribution for non single-diffractive events produced in pp̄ interactions at a CM energy s = 540 GeV . The distribution in the full pseudorapidity range is compared with data from the ISR. Using the scaling variable z = n 〈n〉 a change of shape is observed. The effect is manifested as an increase from 2% to 6% in the proportion of high multiplicity ( z > 2) events. For the central pseudorapidity range, | η | ⪅ 1.5, scaling is approximately valid up to s = 540 GeV .
THE SCALING VARIABLE Z IS N/MEAN(N). THE ERRORS ARE HIGHLY CORRELATED AND ARE BASED ON THE SQUARE ROOT OF THE NUMBER OF EVENTS IN THE BIN. Muons of high transverse momentum p μ T have been observed in the large drift chambers surrounding the UA1 detector at the CERN 540 GeV pp̄ collider. For an integrated luminosity of 108 nb −1 , 14 isolated muons have been found with p T > 15 GeV/ c . They are correlated with a large imbalance in total transverse energy, and show a kinematic behaviour consistent with the muonic decay of the Intermediate Vector Boson W ± of weak interactions. The partial cross section is in agreement with previous measurements for electronic decays and with muon-electron universality. The W mass is determined to be m W = 81 +6 −7 GeV/ c 2 .

New data are presented on charged particle multiplicity distributions for non single-diffractive events produced at CM energies s = 200 and 900 GeV . The data were obtained at the CERN antiproton-proton collider operated in a new pulsed mode. The multiplicity distributions are very well described by a negative binomial distribution. The highest energy data show no sign of approaching scaling, confirming our earlier results on the breaking of KNO scaling. The energy variation of the average charged multiplicity can be fitted to a quadratic in ln s or a s 0.13 dependence.

Results are presented on two-jet and three-jet cross sections, measured in the UA1 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) pp̄ Collider, at the highest available subprocess cms energies ( s ̂ >150 GeV ). Precise measurements of the two-jet angular distribution are consistent with previous results but show significant scale-breaking effects. The three-jet Dalitz plot and the three-jet angular distributions show evidence for final- and initial-state bremsstrahlung processes, in agreement with the leading-order QCD predictions. A comparison of the yield of wide-angle three-jet events with the yield of two-jet events at smaller scattering angles gives for the strong interaction coupling constant: α s ( K 3J K 2J )=0.16±0.02±0.03 at Q 2 ≈4000 GeV 2 , where the factor K 3J K 2J may plausibly be assumed to be close to unity.

The production of Λ 's and Ξ − 's in proton-antiproton collisions at 200 and 900 GeV c.m. energy has been studied using decays observed in the UA5 streamer chambers. The results are compared to previously published 546 GeV data, to results from other experiments, and to four theoretical models. The Λ yield per inelastic event is estimated to be 0.42±0.11 at 200 GeV and 0.66±0.14 at 900 GeV. We find a mean number of Ξ − 's per inelastic collision of 0.03 −0.02 +0.04 at 200 GeV and 0.06 −0.03 +0.05 at 900 GeV. The average transverse momentum of Λ's in the rapidity region | y |⩽2 is found to be 0.80 −0.14 +0.20 GeV/ c at 200 GeV and 0.74±0.09 GeV/ c at 900 GeV. The average transverse momentum of Ξ − 's in the rapidity region | y |⩽3 is estimated to be 0.8 −0.2 +0.4 GeV/ c at 200 GeV and 0.7 −0.1 +0.2 GeV/ c at 900 GeV which is lower than the unexpectedly high value of 1.1±0.2 GeV/ c measured at 546 GeV. The ratio of Ξ − production to Λ production in the region | y |⩽2, p t >1 GeV/ c is 0.07 −0.04 +0.08 at 900 GeV. This value is consistent with the ratio found in e + e − collisions and lower energy pp collisions but lower than the value obtained at 546 GeV. The average particle composition of events at 200 and 900 GeV, estimated using UA5 data, is presented.

An analysis of W and Z boson production at UA1, using 4.66 pb −1 of data from the 1988 and 1989 CERN p p Collider runs at s =0.63 TeV , yields R ≡ σ W Br(W→ μ v)/ σ z Br( Z → μμ )=10.4 −1.5 +1.8 stat.±0.8(syst.) We find R =9.5 −1.0 +1.1 (stat.+syst.) when combining all available UA1 data, in both the electron and muon channel, taken in the period 1983–1989. The production of single photons has been studied in the reaction e+e- -> gamma + invisible particles at centre-of-mass energies of 183 GeV and 189 GeV. A previously published analysis of events with multi-photon final states accompanied by missing energy has been updated with 189 GeV data. The data were collected with the DELPHI detector and correspond to integrated luminosities of about 51 pb^{-1} and 158 pb^{-1} at the two energies. The number of light neutrino families is measured to be 2.84 +/- 0.15(stat) +/- 0.14(syst). The absence of an excess of events beyond that expected from Standard Model processes is used to set limits on new physics as described by supersymmetric and composite models. A limit on the gravitational scale is also determined.

The decays W → ev and Z → e + e − are studied in [ovbar|p]p collisions at √ s =630 GeV . The products of production cross section and branching ratio are measured as σ e w =682±12±40 pb and σ e w =65.6±4.0±3.8 pb. The results are in good agreement with O(α 2 s ) calculations of the production cross sections. Many systematic effects cancel in the ratio, R =10.4± 0.7 0.6 ±0.3, which can be used to give an indirect measurement of the total width of the W boson: Γ w =2.10±0.13±0.09 GeV . The width gives a limit on the top quark mass, m top >53 GeV (95% CL), which is independent of the top decay mode.

We measured the elastic scattering of αα at s = 126 GeV and of α p at s = 89 GeV . For αα , the differential cross section d σ /d t has a diffractive pattern minima at | t | = 0.10 and 0.38 GeV 2 . At small | t | = 0.05−0.07 GeV 2 , this cross section behaves like exp[(100 ± 10) t ]. Extrapolating a fit to the data to the optical point, we obtained for the total cross section α tot ( αα ) = 250 ± 50 mb and an integrated elastic cross section σ e1 ( αα ) = 45 ± mb. Another method of estimating σ tot ( αα ), based on measuring the interaction rate, yielded 295 ± 40 mb. For α p, d σ /d t has aminimum at | t | = 0.20 GeV 2 , and for 0.05 < | t | < 0.18 GeV 2 behaves like exp[(41 ± 2) t ]. Extrapolating this slope to | t | = 0, we found σ tot ( α p) = 130 ± 20 and σ e1 ( α p) = 20 ± 4mb. Results on pp elastic scattering at s = 63 GeV agree with previous ISR experiments.

Results on inclusive kaon production at 200 and 900 GeV centre of mass (CM) energy obtained with the UA5 detector at the pulsed CERN SPS antiproton-proton Collider are presented and compared with our earlier data at 546 GeV. The yield of kaons per inelastic p p event is found to be (0.72±0.12) at 200 GeV and (1.31±0.14) at 900 GeV. Finally, the K/π ratio has been found to exhibit a very slow increase with CM energy.

We present updated results from the UA1 experiment on cross sections times leptonic branching ratios for intermediate vector bosons produced in proton-antiproton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 0.630 TeV. We find that σ·B( W → l βn)=0.63±0.04±0.10 nb and σ·B( Z 0 → l + l − =0.071±0.011 nb where l denotes an average of electron and muon channels. Using current theoretical predictions for this quantity, limits are extracted on the number of light neutrino types. Combining UA1 and UA2 data and imposing the bound N ν ⩾3 we find that N ν ⩽5.9 at 90% CL. Constraints on the mass of the top quark are also discussed.

We report evidence for beauty particle production through the observation of dimuon events from proton-antiproton collisions at energies of √ s =546 GeV and √ s =630 GeV at the CERN collider. Our data indicate that semi-leptonic decays of beauty particles are the dominant source of pairs of high- p T muons. The beauty flavour creation (gg or q¯q→b¯b ) cross-section needed to explain the dimuon rate is σ{ p¯p→b¯b +X, p b T 5 GeV/c, |η|<2.0}=(1.1±0.1±0.4) μb, which is in good agreement with QCD calculations. We also observe clear signals for ϒ→μ + μ − (hidden beauty) and high- p T J/ψ→μ + μ − , well above the backgraound of continuum muon pairs from the Drell-Yan mechanism.

The production of jets is studied in deep-inelastic e+p scattering at low negative four momentum transfer squared 5<Q^2<100 GeV^2 and at inelasticity 0.2<y<0.7 using data recorded by the H1 detector at HERA in the years 1999 and 2000, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 43.5 pb^-1. Inclusive jet, 2-jet and 3-jet cross sections as well as the ratio of 3-jet to 2-jet cross sections are measured as a function of Q^2 and jet transverse momentum. The 2-jet cross section is also measured as a function of the proton momentum fraction xi. The measurements are well described by perturbative quantum chromodynamics at next-to-leading order corrected for hadronisation effects and are subsequently used to extract the strong coupling alpha_s.

We present measurements of the total interaction cross section and of the single-diffractive dissociation cross section in αα collisions at √ s = 126 GeV. The result obtained for the total cross section, σ tot = (315±18) mb, is a substantial improvement on the precision of earlier measurements. Earlier elastic data were re-analysed, incorporating, through the optical theorem, the present σ tot measurement, resulting in improved determinations of the forward slope, b − t <0.07 = (87±4) GeV −2 , and of the integrated elastic cross section, σ el = (58±6) mb. The single-diffractive differential cross section falls exponentially with momentum transfer at small values of t with a slope b sd = (19.3 ± 0.6) GeV −2 . The integrated single-diffractive cross section is σ sd = (16.6±2.5) mb. The topology of charged tracks resulting from the disintegration of the α in single-diffractive events reveals a two-component distribution. The cross section data are compared with multiple-scattering models.

The inclusive production of D*+- mesons in photon-photon collisions has been measured using the OPAL detector at LEP at e+e- centre-of-mass energies of 183 and 189GeV. The D* mesons are reconstructed in their decay to D0pi+ with the D0 observed in the two decay modes Kpi+ and Kpi+pi-pi+. After background subtraction, 100.4+-12.6(stat) D*+- mesons have been selected in events without observed scattered beam electron ("anti-tagged") and 29.8+-5.9 (stat) D*+- mesons in events where one beam electron is scattered into the detector ("single-tagged"). Direct and single-resolved events are studied separately. Differential cross-sections as functions of the D* transverse momentum p_t and pseudorapidity \eta are presented in the kinematic region 2<p_t<12GeV and \eta<1.5. They are compared to next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculations. A first measurement of the charm structure function F2 of the photon is performed in the kinematic range 0.0014<x<0.87 and 5<Q^2<100 GeV^2, and the result is compared to a NLO perturbative QCD calculation.

This paper reports a complete analysis of data taken at DCI to measure lepton and pion pair production close to the threshold in two-photon processes: e + e − → e + e − (e + e − , μ + μ − , π + π − ). Preliminary results have been previously published including one-half of the total statistics. Final results presented here are in good agreement with QED for lepton pair production. The measured cross section for pion pair production is twice as large as that expected from Born terms only — a two standard deviation effect.

Inclusive dijet production at large pseudorapidity intervals (delta_eta) between the two jets has been suggested as a regime for observing BFKL dynamics. We have measured the dijet cross section for large delta_eta in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1800 and 630 GeV using the DO detector. The partonic cross section increases strongly with the size of delta_eta. The observed growth is even stronger than expected on the basis of BFKL resummation in the leading logarithmic approximation. The growth of the partonic cross section can be accommodated with an effective BFKL intercept of a_{BFKL}(20GeV)=1.65+/-0.07.
Z(P=3) and Z(P=4) are longitudinal momentum fractions of the proton and antiproton, carried by the two interacting partons: Z(P=3,4) = 2*ET(P=3,4)/SQRT(S)*EXP(+-ETARAP)*COSH(DELTA(ETARAP)/2), where ETARAP = (ETARAP(P=3)+ETARAP(P=4))/2,DELTA(ETARAP) = ABS(ETARAP(P=3)-ETARAP(P=4)).

The production properties of a sample of 172 charged intermediate vector bosons produced at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron Collider are described. The production cross-section, the longitudinal- and transverse-momentum distributions and the properties of hadronic jet activity produced in association with the weak bosons are in agreement with the expectations of the QCD-improved Drell-Yan mechanism.

We search for Higgs bosons produced in association with a massive vector boson in 91±7pb−1 of pp¯ collisions at s=1.8TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We assume the Higgs scalar H0 decays to a bb¯ pair with branching ratio β, and we consider the hadronic decays of the vector boson V ( W or Z). Observations are consistent with background expectations. We place 95% confidence level upper limits on σ(pp¯→H0V)β as a function of the scalar mass (MH0) over the range 70<MH0<140GeV/c2. When combined with an analysis of the case where V is a leptonically decaying W, these limits vary from 23 pb at MH0=70GeV/c2 to 17 pb at MH0=140GeV/c2.
Cross section from the hadronic analysis fit (C=MEASURED) plus 95 PCT confidence upper limits from the hadronic, leptonic and combined analyses.
The ratio of the W+≥1 jet cross section to the inclusive W cross section is measured using W±→e±ν events from p¯p collisions at s=1.8TeV. The data are from 108pb−1 of integrated luminosity collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Measurements of the cross section ratio for jet transverse energy thresholds (ETmin) ranging from 15 to 95 GeV are compared to theoretical predictions using next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. Data and theory agree well for ETmin>25GeV, where the predictions lie within 1 standard deviation of the measured values.

We report on a search for second generation leptoquarks (Phi_2) using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 110 pb^{-1} collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We present upper limits on the production cross section as a function of Phi_2 mass, assuming that the leptoquarks are produced in pairs and decay into a muon and a quark with branching ratio beta. Using a Next-to-Leading order QCD calculation, we extract a lower mass limit of M_{\Phi_2} > 202 (160) GeV$/c^{2} at 95% confidence level for scalar leptoquarks with beta=1(0.5).

We have searched for first generation scalar leptoquark (LQ) pairs in the enu+jets channel using ppbar collider data (integrated luminosity= 115 pb^-1) collected by the DZero experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1992-96. The analysis yields no candidate events. We combine the results with those from the ee+jets and nunu+jets channels to obtain 95% confidence level (CL) upper limits on the LQ pair production cross section as a function of mass and of beta, the branching fraction to a charged lepton. Comparing with the next-to-leading order theory, we set 95% CL lower limits on the LQ mass of 225, 204, and 79 GeV/c^2 for beta=1, 1/2, and 0, respectively.
The cross section values are extracted with the assumption that BR(LQ --> EQUARK) = 1/2.
We present an analysis of dilepton events originating from top-antitop production in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 109+-7 pb^{-1}. We observe 9 candidate events, with an estimated background of 2.4+-0.5 events. We determine the mass of the top quark to be M_top = 161+-17(stat.)+-10(syst.) GeV/c^2. In addition we measure a top-antitop production cross section of 8.2+4.4-3.4 pb (where M_top = 175 GeV/c^2 has been assumed for the acceptance estimate).

We present the results of a search for third generation leptoquark (LQ) pairs in 110±8pb−1of p¯p collisions at s=1.8TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We assume third generation leptoquarks decay to a τ lepton and a b quark with branching ratio β. We observe one candidate event, consistent with standard model background expectations. We place upper limits on σ(p¯p→LQLQ¯)̇β2 as a function of the leptoquark mass MLQ. We exclude at 95% confidence level scalar leptoquarks with MLQ<99GeV/c2, gauge vector leptoquarks with MLQ<225GeV/c2, and nongauge vector leptoquarks with MLQ<170GeV/c2 for β=1.

We report a measurement of the diffraction dissociation differential cross section d2σSD/dM2dt for p¯p→p¯X at √s =546 and 1800 GeV, M2/s<0.2 and 0≤-t≤0.4 GeV2. Our results are compared to theoretical predictions and to extrapolations from experimental results at lower energies.

We report a measurement of the proton-antiproton total cross section σT at c.m.s. energies √s =546 and 1800 GeV. Using the luminosity-independent method, we find σT=61.26±0.93 mb at √s =546 GeV and 80.03±2.24 mb at √s =1800 GeV. In this energy range, the ratio σel/σT increases from 0.210±0.002 to 0.246±0.004.

The cross sections of the processes $e^+e^- \to K^+K^-$, $e^+e^- \to K_SK_L$ and $e^+e^- \to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ were measured in the SND experiment at the VEPP-2M collider in the energy region near the $\phi(1020)$ meson. These measurements were based on about $10^6$ $K^+K^-$, $0.5 \times 10^6$ $K_SK_L$ and $0.4 \times 10^6$ $\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ selected events. Themeasured cross sections have been analyzed in the framework of the vector meson dominance model and the main parameters of the $\phi$-resonance were obtained, such as its mass, width, the production cross section and branching ratios of the main decay modes. The measured value of the $\phi$ meson total width, $\Gamma_{\phi} = 4.21 \pm 0.04$ is lower than the present world average of $4.458 \pm 0.032$ MeV. Contributions in addition to the conventional vector meson dominance model were found in the $e^+e^- \to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ reaction cross section.

This Letter describes a measurement of the muon cross section originating from b quark decay in the forward rapidity range 2.4 < y(mu) < 3.2 in pbarp collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. The data used in this analysis were collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. We find that NLO QCD calculations underestimate b quark production by a factor of four in the forward rapidity region. A cross section measurement using muon+jet data has been included in this version of the paper.
