The Mark II detector at SPEAR has been used to study D-meson production in e+e− annihilation at center-of-mass energies between 3.8 and 6.7 GeV. The neutral and charged D mesons are identified from their K∓π± and K∓π±π± decay modes. Measurements of RD and of the inclusive differential cross section s dσdz are presented. The quasi-two-body cross sections σDD¯, σD*D¯, and σD*D¯* are derived from an overall fit to the D recoil spectra. No evidence was found for the associated production of charmed mesons and charmed baryons.

THE DIFFERENTIAL SCALING CROSS SECTION FOR NEUTRAL AND CHARGED D'S. DEFINITION OF Z IS 2*E(P=3)/SQRT(S).
The differential cross sections for single-π+ photoproduction from hydrogen have been measured over a range of momentum transfers from -2×10−4 to -2 (GeV/c)2, and photon energies from 5 to 16 GeV. The differential cross section increases by roughly a factor of 2 as the magnitude of the square of the momentum transfer decreases from 0.02 (GeV/c)2. The cross section falls approximately as exp(−3|t|) at large momentum transfers, with a similar momentum-transfer dependence of the cross section at all photon energies studied.

A comparison is made of the properties and production mechanisms of the π + ω and K − ω systems produced in the reactions π + p → π + ω p at 4, 5, 8 and 16 GeV/ c and K − p → K − ω p at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . In the π + ω case apeak is observed at 1.23 GeV (the B meson), while the K − ω mass distribution has a threshold enhancement. The cross section of the low mass (<2.0 GeV) π + ω system falls as p lab −2 , while that of the low mass (<2.0 GeV) K − ω system is almost constant with energy, indicating diffractive production of the K − ω system, but not of the πω system. Using a modified version of the Illinois partial-wave analysis program, it is found that the K − ω system is dominantly produced in the J P = 1 + state with small contributions of 0 − and 2 + , mainly by natural parity exchange - as is found for reactions such as K − p → (K − π + π − )p which are predominantly diffractive. For the π + ω system in the B mass region, J P = 1 + states, produced mainly by natural parity exchange are found; the contributions of 0 − P, 1 − P, 2 − P and 2 + D are consistent with zero. The 1 + D state occurs in the π + ω case but not in the K − ω system, nor in the K ππ − system produced in the K − p → K ππ p reaction.

By using (pp) interactions at three different c.m. energies,\(\left( {\sqrt 8 } \right)_{pp} \)=30, 44, 62 GeV, it is shown that the average charged-particle multiplicity <nch>vs. the invariant mass of the hadronic systemm1,2 has the same behaviour as it hasvs. 2Ehad. We present a measurement of the total cross section for γγ→hadrons, with one photon quasireal and the other a spacelike photon of mass squared −Q2. Results are presented as a function of Q2 and the γγ center-of-mass energy W, with the Q2 range extending from 0.2 to 60 GeV2, and W in the range from 2 to 10 GeV. The data were taken with the TPC/Two-Gamma facility at the SLAC e+e− storage ring PEP, which was operated at a beam energy of 14.5 GeV. The cross section exhibits a gentle falloff with increasing W. Its Q2 dependence is shown to be well described by an incoherent sum of vector-meson and pointlike scattering over most of the observed W range. Agreement at high Q2 is improved if a minimum-pT cutoff (motivated by QCD) is imposed on the pointlike contribution.

The cross-section ratio of neutral-current and charged-current semileptonic interactions of muon-neutrinos on isoscalar nuclei has been measured with the result:Rv=0.3093±0.0031 for hadronic energy larger than 4 GeV. From this ratio we determined the electroweak mixing angle sin2θW, wheremc is the charm-quark mass in GeV/c2. Comparison with direct measurements ofmw andmz determines the radiative shift of the intermediate boson mass Δr=0.077±0.025(exp.)±0.038(syst.), in agreement with the prediction. We present a measurement of the muon neutrino-nucleon inclusive charged current cross-section, off an isoscalar target, in the neutrino energy range $2.5 \leq E_\nu \leq 40$ GeV. The significance of this measurement is its precision, $\pm 4$% in $2.5 \leq E_\nu \leq 10$ GeV, and $\pm 2.6$% in $10 \leq E_\nu \leq 40$ GeV regions, where significant uncertainties in previous experiments still exist, and its importance to the current and proposed long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments.

We report the extraction of R = σ L / σ T from a global analysis of eight SLAC deep inelastic experiments on e-p and e-d scattering performed between 1970 and 1985. Values of R p , R d , and R d − R p are determined over the entire SLAC kinematic range: 0.1⩽ x ⩽0.9 and 0.6⩽ Q 2 ⩽20.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 . We find that R p = R d . Measured values of R ( x , Q 2 ) are larger than predictions based on perturbative QCD and on QCD with the inclusion of kinematic target mass terms, indicating that dynamical higher twist effects may be important in the SLAC kinematic range.

Asymmetries in charged-pion photoproduction from hydrogen and deuterium have been measured with 16-GeV linearly polarized photons. Considerable energy dependence is seen in the natural-parity contribution to the π−π+ ratio from deuterium, and in the unnatural-parity part of the cross section for γn→π−p. The energy dependence of this latter cross section is consistent with the expected from a conventional pion Regge trajectory.

Elastic scattering of p¯ on p has been studied for cosθc.m. between -0.88 and -1.0 and Plab(p¯) between 0.70 and 2.16 GeV/c. The momentum dependence of the cross section shows a sharp dip at 0.9 GeV/c and a broad peaking around 1.4 GeV/c. The possibility of the peak resulting from direct formation of boson resonances has been studied. Alternatively, a diffraction model agrees qualitatively with our data and other elastic data at different angles.

The results of a study of strange particle production in charged current $\bar{\nu}_{\mu} N$ interactions in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber filled with a heavy $Ne-H_2$ mixture are presented. Production rates and average multiplicities of $K^0$'s and Λ's as functions of W 2 and Q 2 are given. The experimental data agree well with the quark-parton model predictions if a yield of 0.06 ± 0.02 of $K^0$'s and Λ's from charm production is included. Upper limits for D-meson production are given and the shape of the charmed quark fragmentation function is discussed. Inclusive production of the K ∗ (890) and Σ(1385) resonances is measured and it is shown that only about 5% of the K 0 mesons and Λ hyperons results from resonance decays. Relative production rates of neutral strange particles on proton and neutron targets are studied.

Data on multiplicities of charged particles produced in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at 200 GeV per nucleon are presented. It is shown that the mean multiplicity of negative particles is proportional to the mean number of nucleons participating in the collision both for nucleus-nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions. The apparent consistency of pion multiplicity data with the assumption of an incoherent superposition of nucleon-nucleon collisions is critically discussed.

The dissociation of virtual photons, $\gamma^{\star} p \to X p$, in events with a large rapidity gap between $X$ and the outgoing proton, as well as in events in which the leading proton was directly measured, has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The data cover photon virtualities $Q^2>2$ GeV$^2$ and $\gamma^{\star} p$ centre-of-mass energies $40<W<240$ GeV, with $M_X>2$ GeV, where $M_X$ is the mass of the hadronic final state, $X$. Leading protons were detected in the ZEUS leading proton spectrometer. The cross section is presented as a function of $t$, the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex and $\Phi$, the azimuthal angle between the positron scattering plane and the proton scattering plane. It is also shown as a function of $Q^2$ and $\xpom$, the fraction of the proton's momentum carried by the diffractive exchange, as well as $\beta$, the Bjorken variable defined with respect to the diffractive exchange.

The joint decay distribution for the reaction pp → Δ++Δ0 is described in terms of double statistical tensors, which were determined in a model-independent way using the World Proton-Proton Data Summary Tape. The statistical tensors were calculated in nontransversal and in transversal reference frames. The results are presented as a function of the proton laboratory momentum, covering the range from 5 to 25 GeV/c. Due to a lack of statistics, the values as a function of the four-momentum transfers were obtained by adding together data from different energies. In a single-arm spectrometer experiment, high-precision measurements of dσdt for π−p, K−p, and p¯p elastic scattering have been made at 8 and 16 GeV/c. The π−p data show rich structure at 8 GeV/c, indicative of strong non-Pomeron contributions, while the 16-GeV/c data are much smoother. For −t≳1 (GeV/c)2 there is a strong s dependence while there is very little for −t<1 (GeV/c)2. For p¯p scattering the forward region is smoothly diffractive for −t<0.4 (GeV/c)2 and shows antishrinkage. The exponential slope parameter b is measured to be 12.36 ± 0.04 (GeV/c)−2 at 8 GeV/c and 11.40 ± 0.04 (GeV/c)−2 at 16 GeV/c. The structure near −t=0.6 (GeV/c)2 seen at lower energies is still obvious at 16 GeV/c. The K−p data show some structure at 8 GeV/c, but can be represented adequately by a quadratic exponential form. At 16 GeV/c the K−p angular distribution shows antishrinkage and lies above the 8-GeV/c cross section for 0.11<−t<0.8 (GeV/c)2.

We present results on transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) and rapidity ($y$) differential production cross sections, mean transverse momentum and mean transverse momentum square of inclusive J/$\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ at forward rapidity ($2.5<y<4$) as well as $\psi(2S)$-to-J/$\psi$ cross section ratios. These quantities are measured in pp collisions at center of mass energies $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ and 13 TeV with the ALICE detector. Both charmonium states are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel, using the muon spectrometer. A comprehensive comparison to inclusive charmonium cross sections measured at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$, 7 and 8 TeV is performed. A comparison to non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics and fixed-order next-to-leading logarithm calculations, which describe prompt and non-prompt charmonium production respectively, is also presented. A good description of the data is obtained over the full $p_{\rm T}$ range, provided that both contributions are summed. In particular, it is found that for $p_{\rm T}>15$ GeV/$c$ the non-prompt contribution reaches up to 50% of the total charmonium yield.

The production of η(550) and ω(780) mesons is studied in π ± p interactions at 16 GeV/ c and K − p interactions at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . Cross sections for exclusive channels are presented, and for the π + p data differential cross sections are given for quasi-inclusive production where the η or ω is required to be accompanied by charged particles only. Close similarities are observed between η, ω and also ϱ 0 (770) production in terms of longitudinal and transverse variables. By a rough estimate, the η, ω and ϱ 0 inclusive yields are found to be in the ratio 0.32 : 0.85 : 1, respectively, for 16 GeV/ c π + p collisions. For non-peripheral production we estimate this same ratio to be 0.34 : 0.9 : 1.

A partial-wave analysis has been performed on the (K − π − π + ) system produced in the reaction K − p → K − π − π + p at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . In the Q mass region it is found that the two dominant states, K ∗ π and Kπ, both in 1 + S wave, are produced with different polarisations, helicity being approximately conserved in the t -channel for K ∗ π and in the s -channel for Kπ. This is in contradiction with the assumption that the amplitude can be factorised into “production” and “decay” parts, and hence that the two amplitudes are fully coherent. The phase variation of the two states do not indicate simple resonance behaviour. It is concluded that the Q-mass enhancement is composite.

We have performed a partial-wave analysis of the mainly diffractively produced low-mass (K ππ ) system in the reactions K − p → K − π + π − p and K − p → K 0 π − π 0 p at 10, 14 and 16 GeV /c . We find that the dominant 1 + S ( K ∗ π ) state has possibly a two-peak structure (around 1.27 and 1.37 GeV). In contrast the 1 + S(K ϱ ) state shows one narrow peak near thershold (around 1.27 GeV). These states are found to be of different origin. The results favour the interpretation of the 1 + S(K ϱ ) as a 1 + resonance below the (K ϱ ) threshold. The t ′ pp dependence is found to be different for the 1 + and 0 − states.
