A measurement of the cross-sections for single and double prompt photon production in p p interactions at s = 630 GeV is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 13.2 pb −1 . The results are in good agreement with the predictions of perturbative QCD. The signal from double prompt photon production has a statistical significance of 4.3 standard deviations.
There is an overall systematic error of 9 pct not included in the table.
Errors quoted include statistical and all PT dependent systematic uncertainties. There is in addition a 6.8 pct overall normalization uncertainty.
The decays W → ev and Z → e + e − are studied in [ovbar|p]p collisions at √ s =630 GeV . The products of production cross section and branching ratio are measured as σ e w =682±12±40 pb and σ e w =65.6±4.0±3.8 pb. The results are in good agreement with O(α 2 s ) calculations of the production cross sections. Many systematic effects cancel in the ratio, R =10.4± 0.7 0.6 ±0.3, which can be used to give an indirect measurement of the total width of the W boson: Γ w =2.10±0.13±0.09 GeV . The width gives a limit on the top quark mass, m top >53 GeV (95% CL), which is independent of the top decay mode.

A study of the two-jet mass spectrum measured with the UA 2 calorimeter has revealed a signal from hadronic decays ofW andZ bosons above a large background. Production and decay properties of the signal have been measured. The combined production cross-section σ·B(W, Z → two jets) is 9.6±2.3 (stat.)±1.1 (syst.) nb, compared with an expectation of 5.8 nb calculated to order αs2. A limit on the production cross-section of additional heavy vector bosons decaying into two jets is given as a function of the boson mass.

We report measurements of the inclusive reaction, p pbar -> p X pbar, in events where either or both the beam-like final-state baryons were detected in Roman-pot spectrometers and the central system was detected in the UA2 calorimeter. A Double-Pomeron-Exchange (DPE) analysis of these data and single diffractive data from the same experiment demonstrates that, for central masses of a few GeV, the extracted Pomeron-Pomeron total cross section exhibits an enhancement which exceeds factorization expectations by an order-of-magnitude. This may be a signature for glueball production. The enhancement is shown to be independent of uncertainties connected with possible non-universality of the Pomeron flux factor. Based on our analysis, we present DPE cross section predictions, for unit (1 mb) Pomeron-Pomeron total cross section, at the Tevatron, LHC and the 920 GeV fixed-target experiment, HERA-B.

From a sample of 2.36 million minimum bias events produced in p p collisions at s =630 GeV in the UA1 experiment and from other published data at the CERN S p p S collider we have estimated the relative production of π ± , π 0 , K ± , K S 0 , Λ, Λ , p and p . We obtain a meson over baryon ratio M B = 6.4 ± 1.1 . From the K S 0 π ± ratio we measure the strangeness suppression factor λ = 0.29 ± 0.02 ± 0.01 which, combining with other available data provides a new world average of 0.29 ± 0.015. Both the K S 0 π ± ratio and the strangeness suppression factor λ as a function of s are investigated, and an extrapolation to the LHC energy is performed.

We have measured the rate of D ∗± meson production inside the jets produced in p p collisions at √ s = 630 GeV. For jets in the transverse energy range 15< E T <60 GeV we find a production rate of 0.10±0.04±0.03 D ∗± per jet, which is in good agreement with perturbative QCD calculations. In addition, we find that the D ∗± fragmentation distribution is strongly peaked towards low z consistent with gluon splitting as the dominant production mechanism.

Angular distributions of high-mass jet pairs (180< m 2 J <350 GeV) have been measured in the UA1 experiment at the CERN pp̄ Collider ( s =630 GeV ) . We show that angular distributions are independent of the subprocess centre-of-mass (CM) energy over this range, and use the data to put constraints on the definition of the Q 2 scale. The distribution for the very high mass jet pairs (240< m 2 J <300 GeV) has also been used to obtain a lower limit on the energy scale Λ c of compositeness of quarks. We find Λ c >415 GeV at 95% confidence level.

We report evidence for beauty particle production through the observation of dimuon events from proton-antiproton collisions at energies of √ s =546 GeV and √ s =630 GeV at the CERN collider. Our data indicate that semi-leptonic decays of beauty particles are the dominant source of pairs of high- p T muons. The beauty flavour creation (gg or q¯q→b¯b ) cross-section needed to explain the dimuon rate is σ{ p¯p→b¯b +X, p b T 5 GeV/c, |η|<2.0}=(1.1±0.1±0.4) μb, which is in good agreement with QCD calculations. We also observe clear signals for ϒ→μ + μ − (hidden beauty) and high- p T J/ψ→μ + μ − , well above the backgraound of continuum muon pairs from the Drell-Yan mechanism.

We report measurements of b-quark and B-hadron production in pp̄ collisions at √ s =630 GeV. We use muon samples to extract beauty production cross-sections over a wide range of transverse momentum in the central rapidity range | y | < 1.5. We compare our results to an O(α s 3 ) QCD prediction and find good agreement over the measured b-quark transverse momentum range 6 GeV / c to 54 GeV / c . Using the shape of the p T and y distribution predicted by QCD to extrapolate our data, we infer a total cross-section for b-quark production at √s=630 GeV of σ( p p ̄ → b b ̄ + X )=19.3±7( exp. )±9( th. μ b .

We present the first wide-range measurement of the charged-particle pseudorapidity density distribution, for different centralities (the 0-5%, 5-10%, 10-20%, and 20-30% most central events) in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76$ TeV at the LHC. The measurement is performed using the full coverage of the ALICE detectors, $-5.0 < \eta < 5.5$, and employing a special analysis technique based on collisions arising from LHC "satellite" bunches. We present the pseudorapidity density as a function of the number of participating nucleons as well as an extrapolation to the total number of produced charged particles ($N_{\rm ch} = 17165 \pm 772$ for the 0-5% most central collisions). From the measured ${\rm d}N_{\rm ch}/{\rm d}\eta$ distribution we derive the rapidity density distribution, ${\rm d}N_{\rm ch}/{\rm d}y$, under simple assumptions. The rapidity density distribution is found to be significantly wider than the predictions of the Landau model. We assess the validity of longitudinal scaling by comparing to lower energy results from RHIC. Finally the mechanisms of the underlying particle production are discussed based on a comparison with various theoretical models.

We have measured the cross sections $d^2\sigma/dP_T d\eta$ for production of isolated direct photons in \pbarp collisions at two different center-of-mass energies, 1.8 TeV and 0.63 TeV, using the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). The normalization of both data sets agree with the predictions of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) for photon transverse momentum ($P_T$) of 25 GeV/c, but the shapes versus photon $P_T$ do not. These shape differences lead to a significant disagreement in the ratio of cross sections in the scaling variable $x_T (\equiv 2P_T/\sqrt{s}$). This disagreement in the $x_T$ ratio is difficult to explain with conventional theoretical uncertainties such as scale dependence and parton distribution parameterizations.

Bottom quark production in pbar-p collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV is studied with 5 inverse picobarns of data collected in 1995 by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The differential production cross section for b jets in the central rapidity region (|y(b)| < 1) as a function of jet transverse energy is extracted from a muon-tagged jet sample. Within experimental and theoretical uncertainties, DO results are found to be higher than, but compatible with, next-to-leading-order QCD predictions.

Cross-sections for diffractive particle production and pseudorapidity distributions of the decay products of diffractive states are presented. The data were obtained with the UA 5 streamer chamber detector at the CERNpp Collider operated in a new pulsed mode yieldingpp interactions at c.m. energies of 900 and 200 GeV. Data recorded with a special trigger designed to select a sample of events enriched in single-diffractive interactions clearly favour apt-limited fragmentation of diffractive states. The cross-section for single-diffractive particle production ϊ was found to be 7.8±0.5±1.1 mb at 900 GeV and 4.8±0.5±0.8 mb at 200 GeV (first error statistical, second systematic). From the pseudorapidity distribution of diffractive states we deduce the average number of charged particles to be 6.5±1.0 at 900 GeV and 4.1±1.1 at 200 GeV. Furthermore we report on our estimates for the cross-section of double-diffractive particle production at both Collider energies.

The properties of events having the topology and kinematic features of double Pomeron exchange are described. The data were taken at the CERN pp¯ collider at s=0.63 TeV in the UA1 detector. A calorimeter trigger was used to isolate events in which a central cluster of particles was separated from forward particles by large rapidity gaps. The invariant mass M of the central cluster (possibly a colliding Pomeron-Pomeron system) covers the range 10-70 GeV/c2. The M dependence of charged particle multiplicity distributions in these double Pomeron events is strikingly different from their s dependence in pp and pp¯ interactions.

We report on measurements of inclusive cross sections times branching fractions into electrons for W and Z bosons produced in ppbar collisions at sqrts=1.8 TeV.From an integrated luminosity of 84.5 inverse pb recorded in 1994--1995 using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, we determine sigma(ppbar->W+X)B(W->e nu) = 2310 +- 10(stat) +- 50(syst) +- 100(lum) pb and sigma(ppbar->Z+X)B(Z->e e) = 221 +- 3(stat) +- 4(syst) +- 10(lum) pb. From these, we derive their Ratio R = 10.43 +- 0.15(stat) +- 0.20(syst) +- 0.10(NLO), B(W->e nu) = 0.1066 +- 0.0015(stat) +- 0.0021(syst) +- 0.0011(theory)+- 0.0011(NLO), and Gamma_W = 2.130 +- 0.030(stat) +- 0.041(syst) +- 0.022(theory) +- 0.021(NLO) GeV. We use the latter to set a 95% confidence level upper limit on the partial decay width of the W boson into non-standard model final states, Gamma_W^{inv}, of 0.168 GeV. Combining these results with those from the 1992--1993 data gives R = 10.54 +- 0.24, Gamma_W = 2.107 +- 0.054 GeV, and a 95% C.L. upper limit on Gamma_W^{inv} of 0.132 GeV. Using a sample with a luminosity of 505 inverse nb taken at sqrts=630 GeV, we measure sigma(ppbar->W+X)B(W->e nu) = 658 +- 67 pb.

We present a measurement of the forward-backward charge asymmetry of the process pp¯→Z0/γ+X,Z0/γ→e+e− at Mee>MZ, using 110pb−1 of data at s=1.8TeV collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The measured charge asymmetries are 0.43±0.10 in the invariant mass region Mee>105GeV/c2, and 0.070±0.016 in the region 75<Mee<105GeV/c2. These results are consistent with the standard model values of 0.528±0.009 and 0.052±0.002, respectively.

Results are presented from analyses of jet data produced in pbarp collisions at sqrt{s} = 630 and 1800 GeV collected with the DO detector during the 1994-95 Fermilab Tevatron Collider run. We discuss details of detector calibration, and jet selection criteria in measurements of various jet production cross sections at sqrt{s} = 630 and 1800 GeV. The inclusive jet cross sections, the dijet mass spectrum, the dijet angular distributions, and the ratio of inclusive jet cross sections at sqrt{s} = 630 and 1800 GeV are compared to next-to-leading-order QCD predictions. The production of Λ 's and Ξ − 's in proton-antiproton collisions at 200 and 900 GeV c.m. energy has been studied using decays observed in the UA5 streamer chambers. The results are compared to previously published 546 GeV data, to results from other experiments, and to four theoretical models. The Λ yield per inelastic event is estimated to be 0.42±0.11 at 200 GeV and 0.66±0.14 at 900 GeV. We find a mean number of Ξ − 's per inelastic collision of 0.03 −0.02 +0.04 at 200 GeV and 0.06 −0.03 +0.05 at 900 GeV. The average transverse momentum of Λ's in the rapidity region | y |⩽2 is found to be 0.80 −0.14 +0.20 GeV/ c at 200 GeV and 0.74±0.09 GeV/ c at 900 GeV. The average transverse momentum of Ξ − 's in the rapidity region | y |⩽3 is estimated to be 0.8 −0.2 +0.4 GeV/ c at 200 GeV and 0.7 −0.1 +0.2 GeV/ c at 900 GeV which is lower than the unexpectedly high value of 1.1±0.2 GeV/ c measured at 546 GeV. The ratio of Ξ − production to Λ production in the region | y |⩽2, p t >1 GeV/ c is 0.07 −0.04 +0.08 at 900 GeV. This value is consistent with the ratio found in e + e − collisions and lower energy pp collisions but lower than the value obtained at 546 GeV. The average particle composition of events at 200 and 900 GeV, estimated using UA5 data, is presented.

We present updated results from the UA1 experiment on cross sections times leptonic branching ratios for intermediate vector bosons produced in proton-antiproton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 0.630 TeV. We present a study of the production of K_s^0 and Lambda^0 in inelastic pbar-p collisions at sqrt(s)= 1800 and 630 GeV using data collected by the CDF experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. Analyses of K_s^0 and Lambda^0 multiplicity and transverse momentum distributions, as well as of the dependencies of the average number and <p_T> of K_s^0 and Lambda^0 on charged particle multiplicity are reported. Systematic comparisons are performed for the full sample of inelastic collisions, and for the low and high momentum transfer subsamples, at the two energies. The p_T distributions extend above 8 GeV/c, showing a <p_T> higher than previous measurements. Results on inclusive kaon production at 200 and 900 GeV centre of mass (CM) energy obtained with the UA5 detector at the pulsed CERN SPS antiproton-proton Collider are presented and compared with our earlier data at 546 GeV. The yield of kaons per inelastic p p event is found to be (0.72±0.12) at 200 GeV and (1.31±0.14) at 900 GeV. Finally, the K/π ratio has been found to exhibit a very slow increase with CM energy.

The cross section for section for low mass, high p T Drell-Yan prod uction is compared to the measured direct photon cross section using QED and QCD derived relationship. This relationship is used to infer a measurement of the single photon cross section at lower values of transverse momentum, where photons cannot be unambigously identified.
GLOBAL SYTEMATIC ERROR OF 30PCT HAS TO BE ADDED.
The yields and average transverse momenta of pions, kaons, and antiprotons produced at the Fermilab p¯p collider at s=300, 540, 1000, and 1800 GeV are presented and compared with data from the energies reached at the CERN collider. We also present data on the dependence of average transverse momentum 〈pt〉 and particle ratios as a function of charged particle density dNcdη; data for particle densities as high as six times the average value, corresponding to a Bjorken energy density 6 GeV/fm3, are reported. These data are relevant to the search for quark-gluon phase of QCD.

Results of the first experiments with the Neutral Detector at the electron-positron storage ring VEPP-2M are presented. Branching ratios of the ø-meson radiative decays have been measured: B ( ø → ηγ )=(1.30±0.06)%, B ( ø → π 0 γ )=(0.130±0.013)%, their accuracy being several times higher than the world average. The width ratio is Γ(ø→ηγ) Γ(ø→π 0 γ)=(10±1) . Using the abovementioned quantities, the ω − ø mixing angle θ v =(38.3±0.2) ° , as well as the ratio between the effective magnetic moments of the s- and u-quarks, μ s μ u =(0.57±0.03) have been calculated.

SAME AS FIG 2A, BUT KINEMATICAL RECONSTRUCTION ARE APPLIED. I.E. THE ENERGY- MOMENTUM CONSERVATIONS ARE USED TO IMPROVE THE ACCURACY OF PARTICLE ENERGIES AND ANGLES MEASURED IN DETECTOR.
Results on the production cross sections ofW andZ bosons detected in the UA2 experiment are given based on a large sample ofW→eν andZ→e+e− decays. The measured cross sections are σWe = 660±15(stat)±37(syst)pb, σZe = 70.4±5.5(stat)±4.0(syst)pb and their ratioR=9.38−0.72+0.82(stat)±0.25(syst). In the framework of the Standard Model, the measured value ofR is used to determine the total width of theW, Γ(W)=2.30±0.19(stat)±0.06(syst) GeV.

A study ofW± andZ0 properties has been performed using the UA2 detector at the\(\bar pp\) collider. The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 142 nb−1 at\(\sqrt s \)=546 GeV, and of 310 nb−1 at\(\sqrt s \)=630 GeV. The experimental results are compared with the predictions of the Standard Model of the unified electroweak theory.

We report a measurement of the diffraction dissociation differential cross section d2σSD/dM2dt for p¯p→p¯X at √s =546 and 1800 GeV, M2/s<0.2 and 0≤-t≤0.4 GeV2. Our results are compared to theoretical predictions and to extrapolations from experimental results at lower energies.
Single diffraction dissociation cross section.
We report on measurements of correlated\(b\bar b\) production in\(p\bar p\) collisions at\(\sqrt s = 630GeV\), using dimuon data to tag both theb and\(\bar b\) quarks. Starting from an inclusive dimuon sample we obtain improved cross-sections for single inclusive beauty production and confirm our earlier results on\(B^0 - \bar B^0\) mixing. From a study of\(b\bar b\) correlations we derive explicit cross-sections for semi-differential\(b\bar b\) production. We compare the measured cross-sections and correlations to\(\mathcal{O}\left( {\alpha _s^3 } \right)\) QCD predictions and find good quantitative agreement. From the measured angular distributions we establish a size-able contribution from higher order QCD processes with a significance of about seven standard deviations. A large nonperturbative contribution to these higher order corrections is excluded.
The first error is PT-dependent, and the second is PT-independent. Dimuons from different b-quarks.

Total cross-section for single b-quark production in the restricted rapidity range.
We summarize the results obtained in the UA1 experiment on the production of bottom quarks in proton-antiproton collisions at √ s =0.63 TeV. Independent muon data samples are used to determine the bottom quark production cross section in different transverse momentum ranges from 6 to 30 GeV. A recent theoretical calculation to O(α s 3 ) of the inclusive bottom quark transverse momentum spectrum in hadronic collisions shows reasonable agreement with the data. We extrapolate the integral P T distribution to P T =0 and in rapidity to estimate the total cross section forthe production of bottom quark pairs. Assuming the shape in P T and rapidity given by the O(α s 3 ) calcultaion, we obtain σ( p p→b b +X) = 10.2 ±3.3 μb .

The inclusive jet cross section has been measured in the UA1 experiment at the CERN p p Collider at centre-of-mass energies √ s = 546 GeV and √ s = 630 eV. The cross sections are found to be consistent with QCD predictions, The observed change in the cross section with the centre-of-mass energy √ s is accounted for in terms of x T scaling.
