We have measured the analyzing power in π+, π−, and KS0 production by a polarized proton beam at 13.3 and 18.5 GeV/c. The data cover the central and the beam fragmentation region, in the transverse-momentum range up to 2 GeV/c. The results indicate that sizable effects are present at high xF and also persist into the hard-scattering region for KS0 and π+. A zero value of the analyzing power was observed for π− production.

The mean multiplicities of π− mesons and protons originating from pC, dC, αC, and CC interactions at a momentum of p=4.2 GeV/c per projectile nucleon and the distributions of these particles in kinematical variables are presented. These experimental distributions are compared with the corresponding predictions obtained on the basis of the FRITIOF model. It is shown that the FRITIOF version used in the present analysis describes satisfactorily our experimental data.

Measurements of the invariant cross sections for the reaction p(400 GeV)+(Li6, Be,C,Al,Cu,Ta)→(π±, K±)+X at laboratory angles from 70° to 160° are reported. Upper limits for p¯ production are given. Comparisons of the data are made using several scaling variables. Charged pion production induced by 201 MeV protons on Ni58 and Ni64 has been studied. The double differential cross sections have been measured over a wide angular range. Different behavior of the angular distribution is observed for low and high energy pions. The yield of positive pions shows a pronounced forward peaked component. The deduced total production yields are about the same for (p,π+) on both isotopes whereas that for (p64,π−) is twice as large as for (p58,π−).
MOMENTUM ACCEPTANCE OF SPECTROMETER = 2.5 PCT, AND TOTAL EFFICIENCY =0.8 +-0.05. THE TARGET THICKNESS WERE 42.7 +-0.2 AND 41. +-0.2 MG/(CM**2), ENRICHED TO 99.3 AND 98.2 PCT FOR NI58 AND NI64 RESPECTIVELY.
