We present results from CDF and D\O\ on $W\gamma$ and $Z\gamma$ productions in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.8{\rm TeV}.$ The goal of the analyses is to test the non-abelian self-couplings of the $W$, $Z$ and photon, one of the most direct consequences of the $SU(2)_L\otimes U(1)_Y$ gauge symmetry. We present direct measurements of $WW\gamma$ couplings and limits on $ZZ\gamma$ and $Z\gamma\gamma$ couplings, based on $p\bar{p}\rightarrow \ell\nu\gamma + X$ and $p\bar{p}\rightarrow \ell\ell\gamma+X$ events, respectively, observed during the 1992--1993 run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider.

The result of a feasibility study to measure the Λ polarization in associated K + – Λ electro-production is presented. This measurement was performed in the experimental Hall C at Jefferson Lab. The scattered electron was detected in the HMS spectrometer, and the electro-produced kaon and the proton from the Λ → pπ − decay were both detected in the SOS spectrometer. This quantity is very sensitive to the elementary p ( e , e ′ K ) Λ process and gives information on resonance production, and Regge exchange, among others. The result presented was measured at Q 2 =1.50 (GeV/c) 2 and cos θ Kγ CM =14°. The limits of the Λ polarization, with respect to the p γ × p K axis, were found to be −0.21 and +0.89 with a confidence level of 68%. The result is compared to theoretical predictions based on an effective hadronic field Lagrangian model and a Regge framework model.

η production has been investigated by the Mark II collaboration at the SLAC e+e− storage ring PEP. η particles are reconstructed by their γγ decay mode. The η fragmentation function has been measured and found to be in good agreement with the Lund-model prediction. η′ production has been measured for the first time in high-energy e+e− annihilation. There is evidence at the 3σ level for Ds± decay into ηπ± and η′π±.

We report on a measurement of the mass of the Z 0 boson, its total width, and its partial decay widths into hadrons and leptons. On the basis of 25 801 hadronic decays and 1999 decays into electrons, muons or taus, selected over eleven energy points between 88.28 GeV and 95.04 GeV, we obtain from a combined fit to hadrons and leptons a mass of M z =91.154±0.021 (exp)±0.030 (LEP) GeV, and a total width of Γ z =2.536±0.045 GeV. The errors on M z have been separated into the experimental error and the uncertainty due to the LEP beam energy. The measured leptonic partial widths are Γ ee =81.2±2.6 MeV, Γ μμ =82.6± 5.8 MeV, and Γ ττ =85.7±7.1 MeV, consistent with lepton universality. From a fit assuming lepton universality we obtain Γ ℓ + ℓ − = 81.9±2.0 MeV. The hadronic partial width is Γ had =1838±46 MeV. From the measured total and partial widths a model independent value for the invisible width is calculated to be Γ inv =453±44 MeV. The errors quoted include both the statistical and the systematic uncertainties.
Errors are statistical and point to point systematic luminosity error of 1 pct.

The deep-inelastic electromagnetic structure functions of deuterium and aluminum nuclei have been measured. The kinematic dependence of the ratio of aluminum and deuterium structure functions is similar to the dependence of the ratio of steel and deuterium structure functions, and provides further evidence for the distortion of the quark momentum distributions of nucleons bound in a nucleus.

We have measured the partial widths for the three reactions e + e − → Z 0 → e + e − , μ + μ − , τ + τ − . The results are Γ ee = 84.3±1.3 MeV, √ Γ ee Γ μμ =83.9±1.4 MeV, and √ Γ ee Γ ττ =83.9±1.4 MeV, where the errors are statistical. The systematic errors are estimated to be 1.0 MeV, 0.9 MeV, and 1.4 MeV, respectively. We perform a simultaneous fit to the cross sections for the e + e − →e + e − , μ + μ − , and τ + τ − data, the differential cross section as a function of polar angle for the electron data, and the forward- backward asymmetry for the muon data. We obtain the leptonic partial with Γ ℓℓ =84.0±0.9 (stat.) MeV. The systematic error is estimated to be 0.8 MeV. Also, we obtain the axial-vector and vector weak coupling constants of charged leptons, g A =−0.500±0.003 and g ν =−0.064 −0.013 +0.017 .

A leading order determination of the gluon density in the proton has been performed in the fractional momentum range $1.9 \cdot 10~{-3} < x_{g/p} < 0.18$ by measuring multi-jet events from boson-gluon fusion in deep-inelastic scattering with the H1 detector at the electron-proton collider HERA. This direct determination of the gluon density was performed in a kinematic region previously not accessible. The data show a considerable increase of the gluon density with decreasing fractional momenta of the gluons.

The photon structure function F 2 γ has been measured at average Q 2 values of 73 and 390 GeV 2 using data collected by the AMY detector at the TRISTAN e + e − collider. F 2 γ is observed to be increasing as ln Q 2 . The x -dependence of F 2 γ , where x is the momentum fraction carried by the parton inside the photon, is also measured. A new measurement of the proton structure function $F_2(x,Q~2)$ is reported for momentum transfers squared $Q~2$ between 1.5GeV$~2$ and 5000GeV$~2$ and for Bjorken $x$ between $3\cdot 10~{-5}$ and $0.32$ using data collected by the HERA experiment H1 in 1994. The data represent an increase in statistics by a factor of ten with respect to the analysis of the 1993 data. Substantial extension of the kinematic range towards low $Q~2$ and $x$ has been achieved using dedicated data samples and events with initial state photon radiation. The structure function is found to increase significantly with decreasing $x$, even in the lowest accessible $Q~2$ region. The data are well described by a Next to Leading Order QCD fit and the gluon density is extracted.

We report the results of a pion-electron scattering experiment to measure the charge radius of the pion. The experiment was performed in a 50 GeV/ c negative, unseparated beam at the IHEP accelerator, Serpukhov, and has been briefly reported in an earlier publication [1]. A magnetic spectrometer instrumented with wire spark chambers was used to record the incident pion trajectory and the angles and momenta of the scattered particles. Events are reconstructed by detailed trackfinding programs, and a set of kinematic and geometric cuts define the elastic sample. Electrons are identified both by kinematic criteria and pulse height information from total absorption lead glass Čerenkov counters. The final elastic sample consisted of 40 000 πe events in the region of four-momentum transfer squared 0.013 (GeV/ c ) 2 ⩽ q 2 ⩽ 0.036 (GeV/ c ) 2 . A full error matrix fit to the form factors of the pion gave the r.m.s. charge radius of the pion: 〈r π 2 〉 1 2 = (0.78 −0.10 +0.09 ) fm .

The negative kaon electromagnetic form factor has been measured in the space-like q 2 range 0.015–0.10 (GeV/ c ) 2 by the direct scattering of 250 GeV kaons from electrons at the CERN SPS. It is found that the kaon mean square charge radius 〈 r 2 K 〉 = 0.34 ± 0.05 fm 2 . From data collected simultaneously for πe scattering, the difference between the charged pion and kaon mean square radii (which is less sensitive to systematic errors) is found to be 〈 r 2 π 〉 − 〈 r 2 K = 0.1 0 ± 0.045 fm 2 .

We have made a measurement of the lepton charge asymmetry in KL0 decays. Magnetic analyses of the decay products in a spectrometer using multiwire proportional counters allowed kinematic reconstruction of the event where the particles traversed only 293 mg of matter. The leptons were differentiated from the pions only through their different transverse-momentum distributions. The asymmetry was measured to be (3.33 ± 0.50) × 10−3, in accord with the superweak description of CP nonconservation.
The asymmetry is defined as follows: ASYM = Cik/Bik, where Cik and Bik are the related to intensity of the events and depend on the particular set of transverse momenta of the leptons and pions (see text for details).

The measurement was made by the NA7 collaboration at the CERN SPS, by observing the interaction of 300 GeV pions with the electrons of a liquid hydrogen target. The form factor is fitted by a pole form with a pion radius of 〈r 2 〈 1 2 = 0.657 ± 0.012 fm.

We present measurement of the π0γ*γ, ηγ*γ and η′γ*γ form factors. The π0-form factor is for the first time observed in the space-like region. The transition form factor of the η-meson is determined from its decay modes π+π−π0, π+π−γ and the neutral decay mode γγ. The decay of the η′ is observed in the decay channels ργ, ηπ+π− with η→γγ and in the four charged prong final state stemming from ηπ+π− with the η decaying into π+π−(π0/γ). All form factors agree well with a simple ρ-pole predicted by the vector meson dominance model and also with the QCD inspired Brodsky-Lepage model.

An analysis of proton-antiproton collisions at √s =1.8 TeV recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) yields σ(pp¯→WX)B(W→μν)=2.21±0.22 nb and σ(pp¯→ZX)B(Z →μ+μ−)=0.226±0.032 nb. A measurement of the proton structure function $F_{\!2}(x,Q~2)$ is reported for momentum transfer squared $Q~2$ between 4.5 $GeV~2$ and 1600 $GeV~2$ and for Bjorken $x$ between $1.8\cdot10~{-4}$ and 0.13 using data collected by the HERA experiment H1 in 1993. We report the extraction of R = σ L / σ T from a global analysis of eight SLAC deep inelastic experiments on e-p and e-d scattering performed between 1970 and 1985. Values of R p , R d , and R d − R p are determined over the entire SLAC kinematic range: 0.1⩽ x ⩽0.9 and 0.6⩽ Q 2 ⩽20.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 . We find that R p = R d . Measured values of R ( x , Q 2 ) are larger than predictions based on perturbative QCD and on QCD with the inclusion of kinematic target mass terms, indicating that dynamical higher twist effects may be important in the SLAC kinematic range.

This paper presents a study of events produced in 29-GeV electron-positron annihilation in which there are just two noncollinear charged particles, no detected photons, and two or more undetected particles. These events can be explained by attributing them primarily to the reactions e+e−→e+e−e+e− and e+e−→e+e−μ+μ− where just two particles appear in the Mark II detector. There is no evidence for unconventional sources for such events.

The non-Abelian nature of QCD suggests that particles that have a gluon constituent, such as glueballs or hybrids, should exist. Experiments WA76, WA91 and WA102 have performed a dedicated search for these states in central production using the CERN Omega Spectrometer. Several non-qqbar candidates have been observed. This paper presents a study of central meson production as a function of the difference in transverse momentum (dPT) of the exchanged particles which shows that undisputed qqbar mesons are suppressed at small dPT whereas the glueball candidates are enhanced.
Resonance production as a function of PT - the difference in the transversemomentum vectors of the two exchange particles, expressed as a percentage of it s total contribution.
