The reaction K + p → p + X is studied at a beam momentum of 16 GeV/ c using the events where a slow proton with momentum p lab < 1.2 GeV/ c is identified by its bubble density. The inclusive spectra presented and compared with those obtained in K + p interactions at 32 GeV/ c and K − p interactions at 14.3 GeV/ c . The prominent features associated with a triple-Regge formula are found to be consistent with the data. It is shown that the Δ ++ (1236) production strongly affects the shape of the inclusive spectra and the results of the triple-Regge fit. After removal of events associated with Δ ++ (1236) production, the data are consistent with the dominance of an ffR coupling.

Inclusive production of Λ and Λ in K + p interactions is studied at incident momenta of 8.2 and 16.0 GeV/ c . Cross sections and single-particle distributions are presented, the correlation between longitudinal and transverse momentum is investigated, and the dependence of average charge multiplicity on missing mass measured. For Λ production, early scaling is observed in the target fragmentation region when the data are presented in terms of ( M 2 - M th 2 )/ s and t , where M th is the threshold value of the missing mass M . Furthermore, a triple-Regge analysis in these variable yields an effective exchange trajectory which passes through the K, Q and L mesons. There is evidence for beam fragmentation in Λ and Λ production, but the contributions seem not to be dominant in the fragmentation region. Nevertheless, the parameter values in a triple-Regge description are estimated, and together with those for target fragmentation in Λ production, provide a complete description of the fragmentation contributions to the two reactions. Integration of the resultant distribution functions over the complete Chew-Low plot yields fragmentation cross sections increasing approximately as log s ; in addition the observed features of the x , p L and p T 2 projections and of the p L - p T correlation are well-described in the fragmentation regions. We present data on inclusive production ofK+ andKS0 mesons in a 70 GeV/cK+p experiment performed in BEBC filled withH2. Cross sections and inclusive Feynman-x distributions for identifiedK+'s andKS0's are presented. The spectra of “prompt” non-diffractiveKS0 are determined by subtraction of the decay products of prominent resonances and diffractive contributions. These data, contrary to the overall inclusive spectra, allow to differentiate between some fragmentation models for soft hadron-hadron interactions.

Measurements of inclusive cross sections at 100 GeV/c are presented for the double-charge-exchange reactions a+p→π−X with a=π, K, or p. The measurements covered a kinematic range in the Feynman x variable of 0.3<~x<~0.9 at transverse momenta of 0.3 and 0.5 GeV/c. A model summing the contributions from resonance production and from inclusive central-region π− production is used to fit the data and demonstrates the importance of resonance production via one-pion exchange for large values of the Feynman x.

Data are presented on the inclusive production of π±, K±, p, and p¯ for π+, K+, and protons incident on nuclear targets at 100 GeV. The results cover the kinematic range 30≤P≤88 GeV/c for Pt=0.3 and 0.5 GeV/c. The observed A dependence of the invariant cross sections exhibits remarkable simplicity, which does not naturally follow from current models of particle production. The results show that the hypothesis of limiting fragmentation can be extended to include collisions with nuclei.

Measurements of inclusive scattering in the target-fragmentation region are extended to higher incident energy. The combined data set shows departures from an approach to the asymptotic scaling limit as A+Bs−12 that are significant even at the highest energies. When these departures are taken into account, the data approach a limit that is consistent with equal cross sections induced by particles and antiparticles and with Pomeron factorization. The corrections to A+Bs−12 are so large that detailed tests of Mueller-Regge relationships are not conclusive.

π+p, K+p, and pp interactions at 100 GeV are studied using the Fermilab hybrid 30-inch bubble chamber with associated downstream multiparticle spectrometer and an unseparated tagged positive beam. Topological cross sections and charged-particle-multiplicity moments are presented and good agreement is found with Koba-Nielsen-Olesen scaling. The charged-multiplicity second moment, f2cc, and the second moment of produced (+ -) pairs, f2−−, are presented both with and without the diffractive-dissociation events, and are discussed in terms of the two-component model invoked to explain pp multiplicity distributions above 100 GeV. Single-particle inclusive distributions are presented and studied in terms of the Regge-Mueller forms of approach to scaling at asymptotic energies. Pomeron factorization is found to hold in the target-proton-associated backward center-of-mass hemisphere for inclusive particle production by incident π+, K+, and protons.

We present our final data on the production of the baryons p, Λ, Λ , Σ 0 , Σ 0 , Σ − , Σ + , Ω + , and of the baryon resonances Δ ++ (1232), Σ ∗± (1385), Σ ∗± (1385) in K + p interactions at 70 GeV/ c . Results are given on total and semi-inclusive cross sections, transverse momentum distributions and Feynman- x spectra. The data are compared with measurements at 32 GeV/ c and other energies. The predictions of the LUND fragmentation model for low- p T hadron-hadron collisions are examined and found to offer a reasonably successful description of the data.

The inclusive production of neutral kaons in 70 GeV/ c K + p interactions is studied with the CERN BEBC bubble chamber. The (semi-)inclusive cross sections are interpreted in terms of the various strangeness channels leading to neutral kaon production. The invariant inclusive cross section for kaon production is studied as a function of p t 2 and the Feynman variable x . The latter distributions are considered both “raw” and corrected for the presence of K 0 's resulting from K ∗ decay. They are compared with the predictions expected from the Regge-Mueller formalism, the recombination model and fragmentation models.

The elastic scattering of K+ mesons on protons is studied at 3.5 and 5 GeV/c. The total elastic cross-sections are found to be (4.36±0.36) mb and (3.82±0.41) mb respectively. The differential elastic cross-sections, which exhibit characteristic diffraction peaks, are fitted by dσ/dt=(dσ/dt)0eαt, giving α=(3.85±0.12) and (4.70±0.21) (GeV/c)−2 for the two momenta respectively, with |t|⪝0.65 (GeV/c)2. The results are compared to those at neighbouring energies, giving some support to the presence of a real part of the forward scattering amplitude. The diffraction peak shows definite shrinking with increasing momenta. The data are examined in the light of models for high-energy scattering.

In the course of a systematic study of K+p interactions at 3.0 GeV/c, the elastic-scattering reaction has been investigated. A total of 1720 events were identified as elastic scatters, giving a cross-section of (4.8±0.4) mb. The angular distribution shows characteristic diffraction peaking and was fitted using dσ/d|t|=(dσ/d|t|)0 exp [αt+βt 2], in the momentum-transfer region (0.05÷1.14) (GeV/c)2. The best fit gaveα=(4.55±0.39) (GeV/c)−2 andβ=(0.64±0.42)(GeV/c)−4. The extrapolated experimental cross-section at 0°, (dσ/dt)0, is found to be (19.5±2.3) mb/(GeV/c)2, and exceeds the optical-theorem prediction by (3.8±2.3) mb/(GeV/c)2, implying that there is a contribution from the real part of the K+p scattering amplitude at 3.0 GeV/c.

We present high-statistics results on the reactions a+p→c+X where a and c can be any of π±, K±, p, or p¯. The data were taken at 100 and 175 GeV/c incident momenta using the Fermilab Single-Arm Spectrometer operated over the kinematic range 0.2<x<1.0 and pt<~1.0 GeV/c. Investigating the x dependence of the data, we find agreement with a quark-parton picture, namely the cross sections have a power-law behavior in 1−x independent of pbeam and pt.

Inclusive cross sections and longitudinal momentum distributions are presented for γ rays produced in K − p and K + p interactions at 32 GeV/c in the 4.5 m Mirabelle hydrogen bubble chamber at the Serpukhov accelerator. The average longitudinal and transverse momentum of neutral pions and the average π 0 multiplicity ▪ 〈 n π 0〉 are estimated. We compare high-transverse-momentum (P⊥) inclusive π0 production from π−, K−, p, and p¯ beams, at 100 and 200 GeV/c, for center-of-mass (c.m.) angles ranging from 2° to 115° and P⊥<4.5 GeV/c. The ratio σ(pp→π0X)σ(πp→π0X) decreases with increasing P⊥, and changes dramatically with c.m. angle. Also, the ratios σ(K−p→π0X)σ(π−p→π0X) and σ(p¯p→π0X)σ(pp→π0X) are approximately constant. These measurements are consistent with a theoretical viewpoint in which constituents of the incident hadrons undergo a hard-scattering subprocess.

We present final results on inclusive production ofK*+(890),K*+(1430) andK*−(890) in\(\bar K^ +p\) interactions at 32 GeV/c, based on a statistics of ∼27 events/μb. Total cross sections,pT-andx-dependence of inclusive distributions are compared with experiments at other energies and with the Lund fragmentation model. Spin density matrix elements of theK*+(890) are also discussed. The results suggest that “recombination” of both initial state valence quarks\(\bar s\) andu of theK+ intoK*+(890), responsible in the Lund model for ∼45% of theK*+(890) cross section, is strongly suppressed.
