COULOMB - NUCLEAR INTERFERENCE IN PROTON DEUTERIUM ELASTIC SCATTERING AT 600-MEV AND THE REAL PART OF P N SCATTERING AMPLITUDE

Nuovo Cim.A 61 (1981) 121-132, 1981.
Inspire Record 170137 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.37549

The differential cross-sections for the elastic scattering of protons on deuterium have been measured at 600 MeV in the |t| range between 0.003 and 0.030 (GeV/c)2. The results are analysed by using the Bethe and Glauber formalisms taking into account spin effects in deuterium wave function and nucleon-nucleon amplitudes. The ratio between the real and the imaginary parts of the spin-independent protonneutron amplitude αpn deduced from dispersion calculations and phase shift analysis is compared with experimental results.

Elastic π−+p differential cross-section data are presented at the incident-pion momenta 1.72, 1.89, 2.07, 2.27 and 2.46 GeV/c. Resonant behaviour in the coefficients of a Legendre polynomial expansion indicates G- or H-wave resonance. Further analysis using an energy-dependent parametrization of G- and H-waves shows the results to be compatible with the 7−/2 assignment for the , but equally acceptable solutions are obtained with the inclusion of an additional 9+/2 resonance contribution.

$\pi^{-}p$ interactions at 720 MeV

The interactions of 720 MeV negative pions with protons were investigated using pictures from the 35 cm Saclay hydrogen bubble chamber. Partial cross-sections were determined with the following results: σ(elastic)=13.2±0.5) mb, σ(π−pπ0)=(5.25±0.30) mb, σ(π−π+n)=()7.17±0.35) mb σ (neutrals)=(9.9±0.7) mb, σ (2π production)=(1.03±0.13) mb. The elastic-scattering angular distribution was fitted with a fifth-order polynomial in cos θ* π which shows the effect of a significantF 5/2-D 5/2 interference contribution and predicts a value for (dσ/dΩ) (0°) in agreement with dispersion theory. For both single-π production channels, the two-body effective mass plots and c.m. angular distributions are presented, discussed and compared with the predictions from phase-space, the Olsson-Yodh isobar model and the pole model of isobar production. TheN *(3/2, 3/2) isobar is seen to play an important role in the ππN final states, but the agreement of the data with the existing isobar models and their assumptions is not satisfactory. A comparison of the different two-pion production cross-sections π−pπ−π+, π−pπ0π0 and π−π+nπ0 suggests a strong contribution of π−p→η0n to the π−π+nπ0 final state. An upper limit for σ(π−p→η0n) of (3.0±0.4) mb was obtained.

Large Angle anti-Proton Proton Elastic Scattering Between 1.50-GeV/c and 2.06-GeV/c

We present differential cross-sections for pp elastic scattering at eight laboratory momenta from 1.50 to 2.06 GeV/c. The data are analysed using an 8-parameter optical modelà la Frahn and Venter. However, the best representation of the differential cross-sections is obtained by combining the glory model with a parametrization of the scattering amplitude in terms of coherent exponentials. Both representations show the dominance of the partial wave with orbital angular momentum equal to four.

By using (pp) interactions at three different c.m. energies,\(\left( {\sqrt 8 } \right)_{pp} \)=30, 44, 62 GeV, it is shown that the average charged-particle multiplicity <nch>vs. the invariant mass of the hadronic systemm1,2 has the same behaviour as it hasvs. 2Ehad. Moreover, in both cases <nch> is shown to be nearly independent of\(\left( {\sqrt 8 } \right)_{pp} \) and in good agreement with the average charged-particle multiplicity measured in the (e+e−) annihilation.

The final states\(\bar p\)pω and\(\Delta ^{ ++ } \bar \Delta ^{ -- } \pi ^0 \), produced in the reaction\(\bar p\)p →\(\bar p\)pπ+π−π0 (6435 events) at 5.7 GeV/c, are studied. Cross-sections are presented, and general features of the resonances produced are investigated. Spin alignment of the ω’s, reported earlier, is studied. An enhancement is observed in the ωp (ω\(\bar p\)) mass plot of mass (1810±15) MeV and width (87 ± 20) MeV.
