Results are presented on two-jet and three-jet cross sections, measured in the UA1 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) pp̄ Collider, at the highest available subprocess cms energies ( s ̂ >150 GeV ). Precise measurements of the two-jet angular distribution are consistent with previous results but show significant scale-breaking effects. The three-jet Dalitz plot and the three-jet angular distributions show evidence for final- and initial-state bremsstrahlung processes, in agreement with the leading-order QCD predictions. A comparison of the yield of wide-angle three-jet events with the yield of two-jet events at smaller scattering angles gives for the strong interaction coupling constant: α s ( K 3J K 2J )=0.16±0.02±0.03 at Q 2 ≈4000 GeV 2 , where the factor K 3J K 2J may plausibly be assumed to be close to unity.

Upper Limits for $B \bar{B}$ Production in $\pi^-$ Tungsten Interactions at 194-{GeV}/$c$

We present a study of events with three muons in the final state, produced in π − -tungsten interactions at 194 GeV/ c . Trimuons can be attributed to B-meson pair production, and this allows us to set (model-dependent) upper limits for the corresponding cross section. Assuming a correlated central production model, we obtain the limit of 1.5 nb per nucleon at the 95% confidence level.

We have studied neutral final states produced in π−p collisions at momenta of 1.71, 1.89, 2.07, 2.27, and 2.46 GeVc, by observing the γ rays emitted. In particular, measurements are presented of (i) π−p→π0n, for which the Regge-pole fit at momenta ≥5.9 GeVc also agrees rather well here; (ii) π−p→η0n, for which the Regge model which fits at higher energies does not agree here; (iii) π−p→π0γn, in which there is some evidence for a diffraction dissociation process as well as ω0-meson production; (iv) π−p→π0π0n, which is dominated by production of N*0(1236)π0 and by peripheral production of pion pairs. In (iv), the former process is found to fit with the same Reggeized ρ-meson exchange model as charge-exchange scattering, while the latter gives indication of the s-wave ππ interaction. An account is given of new techniques, particularly in the data analysis, which were developed in the course of this work.

Measurement and analysis of the reaction gamma gamma ---> 3 pi+ 3 pi-

The JADE collaboration Pust, R. ; Olsson, J. ; Allison, J. ; et al.
Z.Phys.C 51 (1991) 531-540, 1991.
Inspire Record 314005 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.14926

The reactionγγ→3π+3π- has been studied usig the JADE detector at PETRA. The topological cross sectionσ(γγ→3π+3π-) was measured in the CM energy range 1.5–5.5 GeV. The production ofρ0,s was observed and the average number ofρ0,s per event measured. The contributions of the subprocessesγγ→ρ02π+2π-,γγ→ρ0ρ0π+2π- andγγ→ 3π+3π- (phase space) were studied and 95% C.L. upper limits for the cross sectionσ(γγ→ρ0ρ0π+π- determined. Finally the Bose-Einstein correlation for pairs of like signed pions was observed. A fit to a standard parametrization gave results consistent with other studies of this effect in pion systems.

We present high-statistics results on the reactions a+p→c+X where a and c can be any of π±, K±, p, or p¯. The data were taken at 100 and 175 GeV/c incident momenta using the Fermilab Single-Arm Spectrometer operated over the kinematic range 0.2<x<1.0 and pt<~1.0 GeV/c. Investigating the x dependence of the data, we find agreement with a quark-parton picture, namely the cross sections have a power-law behavior in 1−x independent of pbeam and pt.

Inclusive cross sections and longitudinal momentum distributions are presented for γ rays produced in K − p and K + p interactions at 32 GeV/c in the 4.5 m Mirabelle hydrogen bubble chamber at the Serpukhov accelerator. The average longitudinal and transverse momentum of neutral pions and the average π 0 multiplicity ▪ 〈 n π 0〉 are estimated. It is found that 〈 n π 0〉 is an increasing function of the number of charged prongs.

Hadronization in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on nuclei

Inspire Record 749249 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.13387

A series of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering measurements on deuterium, helium, neon, krypton, and xenon targets has been performed in order to study hadronization. The data were collected with the HERMES detector at the DESY laboratory using a 27.6 GeV positron or electron beam. Hadron multiplicities on nucleus A relative to those on the deuteron, R_A^h, are presented for various hadrons (\pi^+, \pi^-, \pi^0, K^+, K^-, p, and \bar{p}) as a function of the virtual-photon energy \nu, the fraction z of this energy transferred to the hadron, the photon virtuality Q^2, and the hadron transverse momentum squared p_t^2. The data reveal a systematic decrease of R_A^h with the mass number A for each hadron type h. Furthermore, R_A^h increases (decreases) with increasing values of \nu (z), increases slightly with increasing Q^2, and is almost independent of p_t^2, except at large values of p_t^2. For pions two-dimensional distributions also are presented. These indicate that the dependences of R_A^{\pi} on \nu and z can largely be described as a dependence on a single variable L_c, which is a combination of \nu and z. The dependence on L_c suggests in which kinematic conditions partonic and hadronic mechanisms may be dominant. The behaviour of R_A^{\pi} at large p_t^2 constitutes tentative evidence for a partonic energy-loss mechanism. The A-dependence of R_A^h is investigated as a function of \nu, z, and of L_c. It approximately follows an A^{\alpha} form with \alpha \approx 0.5 - 0.6.

Neutrino and anti-neutrinos Charged Current Inclusive Scattering in Iron in the Energy Range 20-GeV < Neutrino Energy < 300-GeV

Inclusive charged-current interactions of high-energy neutrinos and antineutrinos have been studied with high statistics in a counter experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The energy dependence of the total cross-sections, the longitudinal structure function, and the nucleon structure functionsF2,xF3, and\(\bar q^{\bar v} \) are determined from these data. The analysis of theQ2-dependence of the structure functions is used to test quantum chromodynamics, to determine the scale parameter Λ and the gluon distribution in the nucleon.
