Neutral strange particle production in deep inelastic scattering at HERA

This paper presents measurements of \k\ and \lam\ production in neutral current, deep inelastic scattering of 26.7 GeV electrons and 820 GeV protons in the kinematic range $ 10 < Q~{2} < 640 $ GeV$~2$, $0.0003 < x < 0.01$, and $y > 0.04$. Average multiplicities for \k\ and \lam\ production are determined for transverse momenta \ \ptr\ $> 0.5 $ GeV and pseudorapidities $\left| \eta \right| < 1.3$. The multiplicities favour a stronger strange to light quark suppression in the fragmentation chain than found in $e~+ e~-$ experiments. The production properties of \k's in events with and without a large rapidity gap with respect to the proton direction are compared. The ratio of neutral \k's to charged particles per event in the measured kinematic range is, within the present statistics, the same in both samples.

Neutral Strange Particle Production in $K^+ p$ Interactions

The production properties ofKs0,$\bar \Lambda$ andK+p interactions at 32 GeV/c are investigated using the final statistics of the experiment. We present total and semi-inclusive cross sections and aver-age multiplicities. Estimates are given of the diffractive dissociation contributions to total and differential cross sections. Thex-,pT−, and transverse mass dependence of inclusive and semi-inclusive distributions is discussed as well as properties of “prompt”Ks0's. The ratio of “prompt”K890+ (K8900) to “prompt”K0 cross sections is measured to be 1.03±0.12 (0.98±0.17). From a comparison of$\bar \Lambda$ production inK±p interactions at 32 GeV/c, we estimate a strange sea-quark suppression of 0.26 ±0.02. The double differential cross sections ofKs0's is studied as a function of Feynman-x andpT2, and a Triple-Regge fit performed. The data are compared in detail to versions of the Lund-model for low-pT hadronic collisions.

Theπ0 andη0 production is studied inπ−p interactions at 360 GeV/c. The cross section forπ0 production in the forward hemisphere (X>0) isσ(π0)=(49.7 ± 1.0 ± 1.1) mb and for η withX>0.1,Nch>2,σ(η0)=(3.1 ± 0.5) mb. The ratio of theπ0 toη0 cross section forX>0.1,Nch>2 isσ(π0)/σ(η0). Results on FeynmanX andpT distributions are presented. The data were obtained using the European Hybrid Spectrometer EHS and the bubble chamber LEBC at CERN.

Investigation of inclusive reactions with production of meson resonances in pion-carbon interactions at 5 GeV/c

Total inclusive cross sections for rho0, ω and f (1270) meson production and the corresponding average multiplicities < n(rho0) > = 0.072+-0.019, < n(ω) > = 0.033+-0.022, < n(f) > = 0 01 +-0.010 have been measured in π-C interactions at 5 GeV/c. It is shown that approximately 8 percent of secondary π- mesons are produced from the meson resonance decay. For the reactions with the production of rho0 mesons the dependence of the inclusive differential cross sections on the rapidity and squared transverse momentum is analysed

Study of Inclusive Production of $\pi^\pm$ and Protons in $\bar{p} p$ Interactions at 32-{GeV}/$c$

Results are presented on the inclusive production of π± mesons and protons in$\bar p$p interactions at an incident antiproton momentum of 32 GeV/c in the MIRABELLE bubble chamber, based on a sample of 55,000 inelastic events. The spectra of π+(π−) andp($\bar p$) are separated in the whole kinematically admitted region of phase space by a statistical method. The semi-inclusive and inclusive cross sections and the main average characteristics of π andp production are calculated. The invariant differential cross sections are studied as functions of the Fevnman scaling variablex, the rapidity and the transverse momentum. Thex distribution of π± mesons in the proton fragmentation region does not show any significant contribution from quark exchange or annihilation processes. A possible contribution of hard quark scattering on mesons or baryons is observed for large transverse momenta.

INCLUSIVE gamma PRODUCTION IN anti-p p INTERACTIONS AT 12-GeV/c

The inclusive production of photons in$\bar pp$ interactions has been studied at incident momentum of 12 GeV/c. Topological cross section has been presented and KNO distribution for$\bar pp$ interactions has been studied. Inclusive cross section for γ production has been measured to be 149.5±8.8 mb. Bulk of these photons come from π0 decays whose cross section has been evaluated independently to be 60.4±7.9 mb. Signals of η and ω have been seen in γγ and π+π-π0 decay modes and their inclusive cross sections have been estimated to be 14.9±8.8 mb and 14.6±7.0 mb respectively. Results on average multiplicities of γ and two particle correlation parameters are presented. Neutral pions seem to be more strongly correlated than the charged pions. The inclusive distributions of the Feynmanx andpT/2 of the photons are compared with expectation from charged pions on the basis of charge independence. Energy dependence of the normalised invariant distributions has been studied. The distribution of the scaling variablez of photons ine+e− and$\bar pp$ interactions has been compared.
