Compensation of transverse momentum is studied in π+p interactions at 250 GeV/c. SignificantpT-transfer is found between c.m.s. hemispheres. With respect to the beam axis transverse momentum is compensated over the whole event, with respect to the sphericity axis mainly within one hemisphere. The highestpT in the event is mainly compensated by increased multiplicity. The QGSM and FRITIOF models qualitatively reproduce these effects, but important differences are observed.

Measurements have been made of inclusive 525 GeV π− interactions in emulsion. The results are compared to proton-emulsion and lower energy pion-emulsion data. Average multiplicities of relativistic shower particles increase with increasing energy, although with a somewhat steeper slope above 60 GeV than at lower energies. The ratio 〈ns〉p/〈ns〉π∼1.1 over the energy range 60–525 GeV. The ratio of the dispersion in the multiplicity distribution to the average multiplicity is the same for proton and pion collisions in emulsion, and is independent of projectile energy. The shape of the shower particle multiplicity distribution does not vary significantly with energy, and KNO scaling appears to hold over the energy range 60–525 GeV. The shower particle pseudorapidity distributions are independent of the beam energy in the target and projectile fragmentation regions, and both the pseudorapidity and multiplicity distributions agree reasonably well with the fritiof model predictions for 525 GeV pions. The dependence of the shower particle multiplicity 〈ns〉 on the number of heavy tracks Nh appraoches saturation as the total shower particle energy becomes a significant fraction of √s , and the pseudorapidity distributions shift toward smaller 〈η〉 with increasing numbers of grey and black tracks at 525 GeV. Neither the average number 〈Nh〉 nor the multiplicity distributions of the heavily ionizing tracks vary significantly with energy, and the normalized angular distributions of grey and black tracks are independent of the type of projectile or projectile energy.

The reaction pp → pp π 0 has been measured using electron-cooled protons incident on an internal gas-jet target at seven different incident beam energies, from 280.7 MeV (1 MeV above the reaction threshold) up to 310.2 MeV. The pions were measured by their decay photons. In the overlapping energy region, the measured total cross sections agree with those measured in a recent Indiana experiment. The angular distributions are consistent with a 3 P 0 → 1 S 0 s 0 transition in the full energy range studied. The kinematical distributions are well described when taking into account the final state and the Coulomb interactions.

Data on the mean multiplicity ofπ- produced in minimum bias proton-proton, proton-neutron and proton-nucleus interactions as well as central nucleus-nucleus collisions at momenta of 1.4–400 GeV/c per nucleon have been compiled and studied. The results for neutron-neutron and nucleon-nucleon interactions were then constructed. The dependence of the mean pion multiplicity in proton-nucleus interactions and central collisions of identical nuclei are studied as a function of the collision energy and the nucleus mass number. The number of produced pions per participant nucleon in central collisions of identical nuclei is found to be independent of the number of participants at a fixed incident momentum per nucleon. The mean multiplicity of negatively charged hadrons per participant nucleon for central nucleus-nucleus collisions is lower by about 0.12 than the corresponding multiplicity for nucleon-nucleon interactions atpLAB≲15 A·GeV/c, whereas the result at 200 A·GeV/c is above the corresponding nucleon-nucleon multiplicity. This may indicate change of the collision dynamics at high energy.

MEAN MULTIPLICITY OF N N COLLISIONS IS DEDUCED FROM PROTON-PROTON DATA.
We have studied J ψ production in p p collisions at s = 1.8 TeV with the DØ detector at Fermilab using μ + μ − data. We have measured the inclusive J ψ production cross section as a function of J ψ transverse momentum, p T . For the kinematic range p T > 8 GeV/ c and |η| < 0.6 we obtain σ(p p → J ψ + X) · Br ( J ψ → μ + μ − ) = 2.08 ± 0.17( stat) ± 0.46(syst) nb. Using the muon impact parameter we have estimated the fraction of J ψ mesons coming from B meson decays to be f b = 0.35 ± 0.09(stat)±0.10(syst) and inferred the inclusive b production cross section. From the information on the event topology the fraction of nonisolated J ψ events has been measured to be f nonisol = 0.64 ± 0.08(stat)±0.06(syst). We have also obtained the fraction of J ψ events resulting from radiative decays of χ c states, f χ = 0.32 ± 0.07(stat)±0.07(syst). We discuss the implications of our measurements for charmonium production processes.

Integrated b-quark production cross section.
The inclusive jet differential cross section has been measured for jet transverse energies, $E_T$, from 15 to 440 GeV, in the pseudorapidity region 0.1$\leq | \eta| \leq $0.7. The results are based on 19.5 pb$~{-1}$ of data collected by the CDF collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The data are compared with QCD predictions for various sets of parton distribution functions. The cross section for jets with $E_T>200$\ GeV is significantly higher than current predictions based on O($\alpha_s~3$) perturbative QCD calculations. Various possible explanations for the high-$E_T$\ excess are discussed.

The inclusive production of η mesons has been studied using 1.6 million hadronic Z decays collected with the L3 detector. The η multiplicity per event, the multiplicity for two-jet and three-jet events separately, and the multiplicity in each jet have been measured and compared with the predictions of different Monte Carlo programs. The momentum spectra of η in each jet have also been measured. We observe that the measured η momentum spectrum in quark-enriched jets agrees well with the Monte Carlo prediction while in gluon-enriched jets it is harder than that predicted by the Monte Carlo models.

Antiproton production near midrapidity has been studied in central collisions of 32 S with sulphur, silver and gold nuclei at 200 GeV per nucleon. The measured transverse mass distributions can be described by an exponential with inverse slope parameters of about 200 MeV, similar to those obtained from Λ spectra. The rapidity density increases weakly with the target mass, ranging from 0.4 to 0.7. The ratio Λ p near midrapidity is approximately 1.4 on average, significantly larger than the corresponding ratio observed in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions.
