Using BEBC equipped with a hydrogen-filled neon-surrounded track-sensitive target, the charged current cross sections and structure functions of hydrogen and neon targets traversed by the same neutrinos and antineutrinos are compared directly. The measured total cross-section ratios between hydrogen and neon allow precise total cross-section values for hydrogen to be inferred. Using this normalization, the ν and ν hydrogen data are combined and the quark distributions in free nucleons, parametrised as functions of ξ, are extracted. This free-nucleon parametrisation is then compared directly with the neon data in order to measure nuclear effects such as those recently reported by the EMC collaboration. Only small effects are seen, in excellent agreement with recent SLAC data in a more similar A and q 2 range.

Proton-nucleon interactions at 14 GeV in nuclear emulsion

Inspire Record 1185337 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.37671

Interactions of 14 GeV protons with free and quasi-free nucleons are studied in nuclear emulsion. The elastic cross-section for proton-free proton collision is estimated to be (11±4) mb. The numbers of protons, charged π-mesons and K-mesons per inelastic interaction are found to be 1.24±0.09, 2.53±0.19 and 0.30±0.06, respectively. The centre-of-mass system angular distributions and the mean values of the centre-of-mass system momenta for charged secondaries are given and compared with the results of works at other energies.

Elastic and inelastic 19.8 GeV/c proton-proton collisions in nuclear emulsion are examined using an external proton beam of the CERN Proton Synchrotron. Multiple scattering, blob density, range and angle measurements give the momentum spectra and angular distributions of secondary protons and pions. The partial cross-sections corresponding to inelastic interactions having two, four, six, eight, ten and twelve charged secondaries are found to be, respectively, (16.3±8.4) mb, (11.5 ± 6.0) mb, (4.3 ± 2.5) mb, (1.9 ± 1.3) mb, (0.5 ± 0.5) mb and (0.5±0.5)mb. The elastic cross-section is estimated to be (4.3±2.5) mb. The mean charged meson multiplicity for inelastic events is 3.7±0.5 and the average degree of inelasticity is 0.35±0.09. Strong forward and backward peaking is observed in the center-of-mass system for both secondary charged pions and protons. Distributions of energy, momentum and transverse momentum for identified charged secondaries are presented and compared with the results of work at other energies and with the results of a statistical theory of proton-proton collisions.

BEBC filled in turn with hydrogen, and with a neon-hydrogen mixture, was exposed to the CERN SPS wide band neutrino and antineutrino beams. The ratios of the charged-current cross sections per nucleon, σ(νH 2 ) σ(ν Ne ) and σ( ν H 2 ) σ( ν Ne ) , between 20 and 300 GeV were found to be 0.656 ± 0.020 and 1.425 ± 0.052, respectively. Multiplying these ratios by the revised cross sections in neon, σ(ν Ne ) E = (0.723 ± 0.038) × 10 −38 cm 2 / GeV per nucleon and σ( ν Ne ) E = (0.351 ± 0.019) × 10 −38 cm 2 / GeV per nucleon, and their ratio, σ( ν Ne ) σ(ν Ne ) = 0.485 ± 0.020 ,, yields values for the total charged-current cross sections on protons, σ(νp)/ E and σ( ν p ) E , of (0.474 ± 0.029) × 10 −38 cm 2 /GeV and (0.500 ± 0.032) × 10 −38 cm 2 /GeV. respectively, and a value for the ratio σ( ν p ) σ(ν p ) of 1.053 ± 0.066.

Inclusive charged-current interactions of high-energy neutrinos and antineutrinos have been studied with high statistics in a counter experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The energy dependence of the total cross-sections, the longitudinal structure function, and the nucleon structure functionsF2,xF3, and\(\bar q^{\bar v} \) are determined from these data. The analysis of theQ2-dependence of the structure functions is used to test quantum chromodynamics, to determine the scale parameter Λ and the gluon distribution in the nucleon.
