New bubble chamber data on the reaction K − n → π − Λ in the c.m.s. energy range 2050 MeV to 2175 MeV are presented. These new data have been combined with published data on this reaction and on the reaction K − p → π 0 Λ and a partial-wave analysis has been carried out between 1875 MeV and 2175 MeV. Parameters of the established resonances in this c.m.s. energy region have been determined and further evidence is presented for the existence of a Σ resonance with mass around 2100 MeV/ c 2 in the P 3 partial wave.

K ∗0 (890) production in the hyperchange exchange reaction π − p → K ∗0 (890) Λ 0 Σ 0 at 10 GeV/ c (28 448 events) is discussed. An amplitude analysis in the t ′ range up to 1 GeV 2 shows that the production mechanism is dominated by natural parity exchange (∼84%). Comparisons are made with predictions from a Regge model and a quark model.

Differential cross sections for elastic p−p scattering have been measured at 285, 348, 398, 414, 455, 497, 530, and 572 MeV kinetic energy. The experiment was performed at the CERN synchrocyclotron, using multiwire proportional chambers placed directly in a proton beam. Scattering was observed for 1.5°≲θ≲10° in the laboratory system. The ratio αp of the real and imaginary parts of the non-spin-flip nuclear forward amplitude was derived from the interference between the Coulomb and nuclear amplitudes. The values obtained are model-dependent, but in this energy range αp is positive and decreases with energy. Qualitatively good agreement with dispersion-relation predictions is observed.

An experimental analysis of p p interactions between the p p threshold (√ s = 1878 MeV) and √ s = 2 100 MeV leads to clear evidence for an s -channel effect in the reaction p p → π + π − π + π − π 0 at 1949 ± 10 MeV /c 2 (Γ ⋍ 80 MeV /c 2 ) . A comparison is made with the backward elastic scattering and charge-exchange behaviour. An interpretation in terms of an object strongly coupled to mesonic decay modes, with small or middle-sized elasticity ( x ⩽ 0.135 −0.06 +0.13 ) is given. No significant narrow structure is observed in the backward elastic scattering between 1.9 and 2 GeV. The experimental resolution of √ s in this case is 2 MeV.

The reaction p n → p p π − at 2.98 GeV/ c is studied with high statistics. The dominant Δ −− production is found in the framework of the additive quark model to proceed mainly through unnatural parity exchange in the t -channel. A detailed comparison with the reaction K − p → K ∗0 n confirms, for the dominant part of the cross section, the predictions of the quark model.

We observe production of a Ξ * (2370) in the reactions K − p→ [YK¯π] K, [YK¯π] Kπ and [ΩK] (K or Kπ) at 8.25 GeV/ c in a high statistics bubble chamber experiment. The mass and width are determined to be 2373 ± 8 MeV and 80 ± 25 MeV, respectively. The I = 1/2 assignment is strongly favoured.

An analysis of the K 0 K 0 system at threshold produced in the final states p p → K S 0 K S 0 ( n π) at 700–760 MeV/ c , is presented. A simultaneous fit to the ππ phase shifts and inelasticities and to the K S 0 K S 0 effective-mass distributions using parametrizations which take into account the analytical and unitarity properties of the I = 0 S-wave amplitudes is performed. The behaviour of the eigenphases and the unphysical Riemann sheet structure for different solutions is studied.

We present evidence for a narrow Y ∗ with a mass of 3.17 GeV and a width ⩽ 20 MeV decaying to ΣKK̄ + pions, ΛKK̄ + pions and ΞK + pions. The data come from two high statistics K − p bubble chamber experiments with a sensitivity of ≈100 eV/ μb at 8.25 GeV/ c and ≈ 45 eV/ μb at 6.5 GeV/ c .
