The properties of theZ resonance are measured on the basis of 190 000Z decays into fermion pairs collected with the ALEPH detector at LEP. Assuming lepton universality,Mz=(91.182±0.009exp±0.020L∶P) GeV,ГZ=(2484±17) MeV, σhad0=(41.44±0.36) nb, andГjad/Гℓℓ=21.00±0.20. The corresponding number of light neutrino species is 2.97±0.07. The forward-back-ward asymmetry in leptonic decays is used to determine the ratio of vector to axial-vector coupling constants of leptons:gv2(MZ2)/gA2(MZ2)=0.0072±0.0027. Combining these results with ALEPH results on quark charge and\(b\bar b\) asymmetries, and τ polarization, sin2θW(MZ2). The ratio of neutral-current to charged-current interactions is measured to be 0.30±0.03 for isoscalar targets, in good agreement with the results of previous experiments. Two independent methods are employed for isolating neutral-current events, one based on hadronic interactions, and the other on the momentum transverse to the hadron shower. The ratio of neutral-current interactions on neutrons to those on protons is measured to be 1.08±0.19.

We have measured neutral and charged current interactions of ν μ and ν μ on proton and neutron. From a combination of ratios we determine the neutral current chiral coupling constants. The results are u 2 L = 0.13 ± 0.03, d 2 L = 0.19 ± 0.03, u 2 R = 0.02 ± 0.02 and d 2 R = 0.00 ± 0.02. These results agree with the predictions of the standard SU(2) × U(1) model. The corresponding value of sin 2 θ W is 0.20 ± 0.04.

We present measured hadron energy distributions for the reactions ν(ν¯)+N→ν(ν¯)+hadrons at high energy, as well as for the similar charged-current interactions. Insofar as possible, the determination of these distributions avoids any a priori assumptions about either the neutral-current or the charged-current interactions. We further analyze the neutral-current distributions within the framework of specific models, particularly the scaling model, to obtain a positive-helicity component P=0.36±0.10, which lies between pure V−A and pure V or A, and a coupling strength of g0=0.31±0.03 relative to the charged-current interaction. These coupling parameters agree well with the predictions of the Weinberg-Salam model with sin2θW=0.33±0.07.

Samples of 9200 muon-neutrino and 3800 muon-antineutrino interactions on nuclei were obtained with the fine-grain calorimeter of the CHARM Collaboration at the CERN 200 GeV narrow-band neutrino beam. The interactions were classified as either neutral-current or charged-current processes on an event-by-event basis. Neutral-current and charged-current cross sections in neutrino and antineutrino interactions are presented. From these results we deduce a statistically significant contribution of right-handed coupling to the neutral hadronic current, and a value of the electroweak mixing angle corresponding to sin 2 θ = 0.220 ± 0.014.

The first spin-transfer observables for the πd→pp reaction have been measured at a number of energies spanning the Δ resonance in this system. These parameters correspond to KSL and KSS of the pp→dπ reaction for incident proton energies ranging from 600 to 800 MeV. Such data can provide an important constraint on the determination of the partial-wave amplitudes describing this fundamental reaction. The discrepancies between our data, theoretical predictions, and values calculated from published partial-wave amplitudes demonstrate the need for further work in this area.

The Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber has been exposed to a quadrupole triplet neutrino beam produced at the Tevatron. The ratio of ν to ν¯ in the beam is approximately 2.5. The mean event energy for ν-induced charged-current events is 150 GeV, and for ν¯-induced charged-current events it is 110 GeV. A total of 64 dimuon candidates (1 μ+μ+, 52 μ−μ+ and μ+μ−, and 11 μ−μ−) is observed in the data sample of approximately 13 300 charged-current events. The number and properties of the μ−μ− and μ+μ+ candidates are consistent with their being produced by background processes, the important sources being π and K decay and punchthrough. The 90%-C.L. upper limit for μ−μ−/μ− for muon momenta above 4 GeV/c is 1.2×10−3, and for momenta above 9 GeV/c this limit is 1.1×10−3. The opposite-sign-dimuon–to–single-muon ratio is (0.62±0.13)% for muon momenta above 4 GeV/c. There are eight neutral strange particles in the opposite-sign sample, leading to a rate per dimuon event of 0.65±0.29. The opposite-sign-dimuon sample is consistent with the hypothesis of charm production and decay.

Final data measured with the EMC forward spectrometer are presented on the production of forward charged hadrons in μp and μd scattering at incident beam energies between 100 and 280 GeV. The large statistic of 373 000 events allows a study of the semi-inclusive hadron production as a function ofz,pT2 and 〈pT2〉 in smallQ2,xBj andW bins. Charge multiplicity ratios and differences as a function ofz andxBj are given forp, d andn-targets. From the differences of charge multiplicities the ratio of the valence quark distributions of the protondv(x)/uv(x) is determined for the first time in charged lepton scattering. The Gronau et al. sum rule is tested, the measured sum being 0.31±0.06 stat. ±0.05 syst., compared with the theoretical expectation of 2/7≈0.286. Data are presented on Pomeron-Pomeron interactions which produce a centralπ+π− system in proton-proton collisions at\(\sqrt s= 62 GeV\) at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. This process may favor the production of gluonic bound states. A partial-wave analysis of theπ+π− system shows evidence for the production of the statesf0(975),f0(1400), andf2(1270). The fitted mass for thef2(1270) is about 50 MeV below the world average. In addition, the production mechanism for thef2(1270) is uniquely different from that for the other final states in that there is a correlation between the outgoing protons. this is consistent with a picture of two-gluon exchange with thef2(1270) produced by gluon fusion, and could indicate that thef2(1270) has a glueball component.

The results are consistent with leading order QCD calculations, and a lower limit Λ c >825 GeV (95% CL ) is set on the quark compositeness scale Λ c .

We report results on inclusive production of the charmed baryon Λc+ from e+e− annihilations at s=10.5 GeV. Measurements are presented of the inclusive cross section times branching fraction for the continuum production of Λc+ as observed in six different decay modes, and of a new, improved value of the Λc+ mass. The inclusive cross section times the branching fraction into pK−π+ is measured to be 10.0±1.5±1.5 pb summed over all xp. The branching fractions of Λc+ into pK¯0, pK¯0π+π−, Λπ+, Λπ+π−π+, and Ξ−K+π+ relative to that into pK−π+ are measured to be 0.44±0.07±0.05, 0.43±0.12±0.04, 0.18±0.03±0.03, 0.65±0.11±0.12, and 0.15±0.04±0.03, respectively. The Λc+ mass is measured to be 2284.7±0.6±0.7 MeV/c2. The measured momentum distributions for continuum production of Λc+ are compared to analytical fragmentation functions and to other measurements.

An analysis has been performed of neutrino and antineutrino interactions with protons and neutrons in a deuterium bubble chamber. The interactions under study are quasielastic neutrino-neutron scattering and one-, two- and three-pion production reactions. Results are presented on cross sections, effective mass distributions, resonance production, momentum transfer distributions and coefficients of the decay angular distributions. Where possible, comparisons are made with existing theoretical models and predictions.

A sample of 105 e + e − events with an invariant mass greater than 11 GeV/ c 2 produced in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 62.3 GeV is discussed. Cross sections are presented as a function of mass and transverse momentum. The multiplicity, transverse momentum, and azimuthal dependence of associated particles are also studied.
