Parity non-conserving (PNC) optical rotation has been measured by laser polarimetry in the 648 nm magnetic dipole transition (6p$^{3}J$=$\frac{3}{2}\rightarrow$6p$^{3}J'=\frac{5}{2}$) in atomic bismuth. The experiment involves finding the small differences in rotation between selected frequency points in the vicinity of the F = 6 $\rightarrow$ F' = 7 hyperfine component. Faraday rotation, which can be distinguished from PNC rotation by its wavelength dependence, is used in locking the laser frequency and calibrating the PNC' effect. Results obtained over a six-year period are summarised; a detailed discussion of error sources and associated tests is given. The final result for the PNC parameter of the 648 nm transition is R = (-9.3 $\pm$ 1.4)X10$^{-8}$. This is in agreement with the measurements of Birich et a/ but not with those of Barkov and Zolotorev. It is also consistent with the standard model of the electroweak interaction, but the uncertainty in the atomic theory is now the limiting factor in the comparison.

The total cross sections for the elastic electroproduction of $\rh0$ and $J/\Psi$ mesons for $Q~2$ $>$ 8 GeV$~2$ and $\langle W \rangle \simeq 90$ GeV/c$~2$ are measured at HERA with the H1 detector. The measurements are for an integrated electron$-$proton luminosity of $\simeq$3pb$~{-1}$. The dependences of the total virtual photon$-$proton ($\gamma~* p$) cross sections on $Q~2$, $W$ and the momentum transfer squared to the proton ($t$), and, for the $\rho$, the dependence on the polar decay angle ($\cos \theta~*$), are presented. The $J/\Psi$ : $\rh0$ cross section ratio is determined. The results are discussed in the light of theoretical models and of the interplay of hard and soft physics processes.

We report results on inclusive production of the charmed baryon Λc+ from e+e− annihilations at s=10.5 GeV. Measurements are presented of the inclusive cross section times branching fraction for the continuum production of Λc+ as observed in six different decay modes, and of a new, improved value of the Λc+ mass. The inclusive cross section times the branching fraction into pK−π+ is measured to be 10.0±1.5±1.5 pb summed over all xp. The branching fractions of Λc+ into pK¯0, pK¯0π+π−, Λπ+, Λπ+π−π+, and Ξ−K+π+ relative to that into pK−π+ are measured to be 0.44±0.07±0.05, 0.43±0.12±0.04, 0.18±0.03±0.03, 0.65±0.11±0.12, and 0.15±0.04±0.03, respectively. The Λc+ mass is measured to be 2284.7±0.6±0.7 MeV/c2. The measured momentum distributions for continuum production of Λc+ are compared to analytical fragmentation functions and to other measurements.

We have measured the production cross section for K s 0 in e + e − annihilation from 3.6 to 5.0 GeV center of mass energy. A substantial increase of the K s 0 yield is observed around 4 GeV in qualitative agreement with the charm hypothesis.
THE DATA GIVEN HERE AT 9.3 GEV AND ABOVE ARE REPORTED IN C. BERGER ET AL., PL 104B, 79 (1981). THE 12.0 AND 30 GEV DATA WERE TAKEN AT PETRA.

This is the first full solid angle analysis of large transverse energy events in\(p\bar p\) collisions at the CERN collider. Events with transverse energies in excess of 200 GeV at\(\sqrt s= 630 GeV\) are studied for any non-standard physics and quantitatively compared with expectations from perturbative QCD Monte Carlo models. A corrected differential cross section is presented. A detailed examination is made of jet profiles, event jet multiplicities and the fraction of the transverse energy carried by the two jets with the highest transverse jet energies. There is good agreement with standard theory for events with transverse energies up to the largest observed values\(( \approx \sqrt {s/2} )\) and the analysis shows no evidence for any non-QCD mechanism to account for the event characteristics.

At the electron-proton collider HERA the inclusive $D~{*\pm}$ meson photoproduction cross section has been measured with the H1 detector in two different, but partly overlapping, kinematical regions. For the first, where $\langle W_{\gamma p}\rangle \approx 200$\ GeV and $Q~2 < 0.01\,\gev~2$, the result is $\sigma(\gamma p \rightarrow c \bar{c} X) = (13.2 \pm 2.2 ~{+2.1}_{-1.7}\, ~{+9.9}_{-4.8})\,\mu b$. The second measurement for $Q~2 < 4\,\gev~2$ yields $\sigma(\gamma p \rightarrow c \bar{c} X) = ( 9.3 \pm 2.1 ~{+1.9}_{-1.8}\, ~{+6.9}_ {-3.2} )\,\mu b$ at $\langle W_{\gamma p}\rangle \approx 142$\,GeV and $\sigma(\gamma p \rightarrow c \bar{c} X) = ( 20.6 \pm 5.5 ~ {+4.3}_{-3.9}\, ~{+15.4}_{-7.2})\,\mu b$ at $\langle W_{\gamma p} \rangle \approx 230$\,GeV, respectively. The third error accounts for an additional uncertainty due to the proton and photon parton density parametrizations. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of the $D~{*\pm}$ transverse momentum and rapidity. The results compare reasonably well with next-to-leading order QCD calculations. Evidence for diffractive photoproduction of charm quark is presented.
