Elastic Electroproduction of $\rh0$ and $J/\Psi$ Mesons at large $Q~2$ at HERA

The total cross sections for the elastic electroproduction of $\rh0$ and $J/\Psi$ mesons for $Q~2$ $>$ 8 GeV$~2$ and $\langle W \rangle \simeq 90$ GeV/c$~2$ are measured at HERA with the H1 detector. The measurements are for an integrated electron$-$proton luminosity of $\simeq$3pb$~{-1}$. The dependences of the total virtual photon$-$proton ($\gamma~* p$) cross sections on $Q~2$, $W$ and the momentum transfer squared to the proton ($t$), and, for the $\rho$, the dependence on the polar decay angle ($\cos \theta~*$), are presented. The $J/\Psi$ : $\rh0$ cross section ratio is determined. The results are discussed in the light of theoretical models and of the interplay of hard and soft physics processes.

The Missing Mass Squared Dependence of the Average Charged Particle Multiplicity in the Reaction K+ p --> K0 X++ from 5-GeV/c-16-GeV/c

The average charged particle multiplicity, 〈 n ch ( M X 2 )〉, in the reaction K + p→K o X ++ is studied as a function of the mass squared, M X 2 , of the recoil system X and also as a function of the K o transverse momentum, p T , at incident momenta of 5.0, 8.2 and 16.0 GeV/ c . The complete data samples yield distributions which are not independent of c.m. energy squared, s , They exhibit a linear dependence on log ( M X 2 X / M o 2 )[ M o 2 =1 GeV 2 ] with a change in slope occurring for M X 2 ≈ s /2, and do not agree with the corresponding distributions of 〈 n ch 〉 as a function of s for K + p inelastic scattering. Sub-samples of the data for which K o production via beam fragmentation, central production and target fragmentation are expected to be the dominant mechanisms show that, within error, the distribution of 〈 n ch ( M X 2 )〉 versus M X 2 is independent of incident momentum for each sub-sample separately. In particular in the beam fragmentation region the 〈 n ch ( M X 2 )〉 versus M X 2 distribution agrees rather well with that of 〈 n ch 〉 versus s for inelastic K + p interactions. The latter result agrees with recent results on the reactions pp → pX and π − p → pX in the NAL energy range. Evidence is presented for the presence of different production mechanisms in these separate regions.

Massive hadron pair production by 800-geV/c protons on nuclear targets

We report data on proton-nucleon collisions obtained on Fermilab experiment E711, in which high transverse momentum hadrons are produced near 90° in the proton-nucleon center of mass forming high mass states, using an 800 GeV/c proton beam on targets of beryllium, aluminum, iron, and tungsten. The data presented cover the mass range from 7 to 15 GeV/c2, the three dihadron charge states ++, +-, and --, and parton-parton scattering angles up to cosθ*=0.50. We present the differential mass dihadron cross section, as well as the angular and charge dependence of the measurement. The cross section as a function of the parton-parton scattering angle for the three charge states is shown to vary linearly with the value of the atomic weight. While the angular distributions are shown to be independent of the target type, a small dependence on the charge state of the distributions is observed. The data are shown to be in good agreement with extrapolations from previous measurements and phenomenological QCD calculations.

Production of $\pi^0$ Mesons at high $p_T$ in $\pi^-$Be and pBe Collisions at 500 GeV/c

We present new measurements of π0 production at high transverse momenta (pT) for π− and p interactions on Be and Cu targets at 500 GeV/c. The observed dependence of the yields as a function of pT and rapidity (y) is compared with expectations from leading-log QCD over a kinematic range in which the inclusive cross sections fall by more than 4 order of magnitude.

Neutral strange particle production in 200-GeV/c p / pi+ / K+ interactions on Au, Ag, and Mg.

We have used the Fermilab 30-in. bubble-chamber-hybrid spectrometer to study neutral-strange-particle production in the interactions of 200-GeV/c protons and π+ and K+ mesons with nuclei of gold, silver, and magnesium. Average multiplicities and inclusive cross sections for K0 and Λ are measured, and a power law is found to give a good description of their A dependence. The exponent characterizing the A dependence is consistent with being the same for K0 and Λ production, and also the same for proton and π+ beams. Average K0 and Λ multiplicities, as well as their ratio, have been measured as functions of the numbers of projectile collisions νp and secondary collisions νs in the nucleus, and indicate that rescattering contributes significantly to enhancement of Λ production but not to K0 production. The properties of events with multiple K0's or Λ's also corroborate this conclusion. K0 rapidities are in the central region and decrease gently with increasing νp, while Λ rapidities are in the target-fragmentation region and are independent of νp. K0 and Λ multiplicities increase with the rapidity loss of the projectile, but their rapidities do not.

Production of direct photons and neutral mesons at large transverse momenta by pi- and p beams at 500-GeV/c

We present results from the initial run of Fermilab experiment E706. The data include incident π− and p beams at 500 GeV/c on Be and Cu targets, and span the kinematic ranges of transverse momentum and rapidity of 3.5≤pT≤10 GeV/c and −0.7≤yc.m.≤0.7, respectively. We have measured cross sections for π0 and direct-photon production, as well as the ηπ0 production ratio. From the data on Be and Cu, we have extracted the nuclear dependence of π0 production, parametrized as Aα. The cross sections are compared with next-to-leading-log QCD predictions for different choices of the QCD momentum scales and several sets of parton distribution functions.

Calorimeter measurements of dσ de t for pp, dd, pα , and αα collisions at S nn =31.5 GeV are presented for the pseudorapidity interval | η cm | ⩽ 0.7, extending over eight decades to E t ⩾ 30 GeV. The data are compared with models that predict nuclear cross sections directly from pp data, under the assumption of independent nucleon scatters.

In an experiment performed at Fermilab we have studied the production of high p t hadron jets from 400 GeV/ c pp interactions. A large solid-angle, towered calorimeter was used to trigger and reconstruct the jet events. We report results for inclusive single-jet production and compare those results with QCD predictions and results obtained at the ISR and the SPS Collider.
