The e + e − → p p cross section has been measured in the energy interval (1975 ⩽ 2 E ⩽ 2250) MeV for |cos θ | < 0.7. The measurement is based on ∼ 100 events, thus improving by a factor 3 on the previous existing statistics in this energy interval. The form factor | G | 2 is given as a function of energy under the assumption | G E | = | G M |. We also give the first measurement of the differential cross section, averaged over the energy interval, and estimate the ratio G M |/| G E | from it.

Using BEBC equipped with a hydrogen-filled neon-surrounded track-sensitive target, the charged current cross sections and structure functions of hydrogen and neon targets traversed by the same neutrinos and antineutrinos are compared directly. The measured total cross-section ratios between hydrogen and neon allow precise total cross-section values for hydrogen to be inferred. Using this normalization, the ν and ν hydrogen data are combined and the quark distributions in free nucleons, parametrised as functions of ξ, are extracted. This free-nucleon parametrisation is then compared directly with the neon data in order to measure nuclear effects such as those recently reported by the EMC collaboration. Only small effects are seen, in excellent agreement with recent SLAC data in a more similar A and q 2 range.

The deep-inelastic electromagnetic structure functions of deuterium and aluminum nuclei have been measured. The kinematic dependence of the ratio of aluminum and deuterium structure functions is similar to the dependence of the ratio of steel and deuterium structure functions, and provides further evidence for the distortion of the quark momentum distributions of nucleons bound in a nucleus.

We have made a detailed comparison of the charged-particle flow in three-jet events (e+e−→qq¯g) and radiative two-jet events (e+e−→qq¯γ) from e+e− annihilation at Ec.m.=29 GeV. Accurate comparisons can be made because these two event types have similar topologies. In the angular region between the quark and antiquark jets, we observe substantially fewer charged tracks in the two-jet events than in the radiative three-jet events.

The photon structure function F 2 γ has been measured at average Q 2 values of 73 and 390 GeV 2 using data collected by the AMY detector at the TRISTAN e + e − collider. F 2 γ is observed to be increasing as ln Q 2 . The x -dependence of F 2 γ , where x is the momentum fraction carried by the parton inside the photon, is also measured. The reaction e+e−→e+e−π0π0 has been analyzed using 97 pb−1 of data taken with the Crystal Ball detector at the DESY e−e+ storage ring DORIS II at beam energies around 5.3 GeV. For the first time we have measured the cross section for γγ→π0π0 for π0π0 mvariant masses ranging from threshold to about 2 GeV. We measure an approximately flat cross section of about 10 nb for W=mπ0π0<0.8 GeV, which is below 0.6 GeV, in good agreement with a theoretical prediction based on an unitarized Born-term model. At higher invariant masses we observe formation of the f2(1270) resonance and a hint of the f0(975). We deduce the following two-photon widths: Γγγ(f2(1270))=3.19±0.16±0.280.29 keV and Γγγ(f0(975))<0.53 keV at 90% C.L. The decay-angular distributions show the π0π0 system to be dominantly spin 0 for W<0.7 GeV and spin 2, helicity 2 in the f2(1270) region, with helicity 0 contributing at most 22% (90% C.L.).

A study of the fragmentation properties of charm and bottom quarks intoD mesons is presented. From 263 700Z0 hadronic decays collected in 1991 with the DELPHI detector at the LEP collider,D0,D+ andD*+ are reconstructed in the modesK−π+,K−π+K+ andD0π+ followed byD0→K−π+, respectively. The fractional decay widths\(\Gamma {{(Z^0\to {D \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {D {\bar D}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\bar D}}X)} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{(Z^0\to {D \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {D {\bar D}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\bar D}}X)} {\Gamma _h }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\Gamma _h }}\) are determined, and first results are presented for the production ofD mesons from\(c\bar c\) and\(b\bar b\) events separately. The average energy fraction ofD*± in charm quark fragmentation is found to be 〈XE(D*)〉c=0.487±0.015 (stat)±0.005 (sys.). Assuming that the fraction ofDs and charm-baryons produced at LEP is similar to that around 10 GeV, theZ0 partial width into charm quark pairs is determined to beΓc/Γh=0.187±0.031 (stat)±0.023 (sys). The probability for ab quark to fragment into\(\bar B_s \) orb-baryons is inferred to be 0.268±0.094 (stat)±0.100 (sys) from the measured probability that it fragments into a\(\bar B^0 \) orB−.

We have measured the photon yield in lepton pair events recorded by the OPAL detector in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.1 pb −1 at centre-of-mass energies between 88 GeV and 94 GeV. The results are compared to QED expectations for initial and final state photon radiation. No anomalous photon yield has been found, and stringent limits on the branching ratio for exotic radiative three body Z 0 decays into a photon and a pair of leptons are obtained. We also place limits on possible Z 0 decays into a photon and a resonance X with subsequent decays of X into a pair of leptons. Acollinear μ + μ − events with missing momentum along the beam direction are identified as events with hard initial state photon radiation and used to measure an average cross section of 15 ± 8 6 pb for e + e − annihilation into μ + μ − , in the so far untested range of centre-of-mass energies between 60 GeV and 84 GeV. This value is consistent with a cross section of 24 pb, expected from Z 0 and photon exchange.

We present a measurement of the cross section for the reaction e + e − → e + e − π + π − π + π − at SPEAR. We report the results of a pion-electron scattering experiment to measure the charge radius of the pion. The experiment was performed in a 50 GeV/ c negative, unseparated beam at the IHEP accelerator, Serpukhov, and has been briefly reported in an earlier publication [1]. A magnetic spectrometer instrumented with wire spark chambers was used to record the incident pion trajectory and the angles and momenta of the scattered particles. Events are reconstructed by detailed trackfinding programs, and a set of kinematic and geometric cuts define the elastic sample. Electrons are identified both by kinematic criteria and pulse height information from total absorption lead glass Čerenkov counters. The final elastic sample consisted of 40 000 πe events in the region of four-momentum transfer squared 0.013 (GeV/ c ) 2 ⩽ q 2 ⩽ 0.036 (GeV/ c ) 2 . A full error matrix fit to the form factors of the pion gave the r.m.s. charge radius of the pion: 〈r π 2 〉 1 2 = (0.78 −0.10 +0.09 ) fm .

The negative kaon electromagnetic form factor has been measured in the space-like q 2 range 0.015–0.10 (GeV/ c ) 2 by the direct scattering of 250 GeV kaons from electrons at the CERN SPS. It is found that the kaon mean square charge radius 〈 r 2 K 〉 = 0.34 ± 0.05 fm 2 . From data collected simultaneously for πe scattering, the difference between the charged pion and kaon mean square radii (which is less sensitive to systematic errors) is found to be 〈 r 2 π 〉 − 〈 r 2 K = 0.1 0 ± 0.045 fm 2 .

Measurements have been made of the inclusive scattering of 96, 147, and 219 GeV muons from hydrogen, and of 147 GeV muons from deuterium. Results are presented for the nucleon structure function F2(x,Q2) [≡νW2(x,Q2)] for 10<ν<200 GeV and 0.2<Q2<80 GeV2. The value of F2 rises with Q2 at small x, and falls with Q2 at large x, in agreement with the ideas of quantum chromodynamics. An average value of the ratio σLσT≡R=0.52±0.35 has been obtained for the region 0.003<x<0.10 and 0.4<Q2<30 GeV2. The values of F2 from this experiment have been combined with those from other charged-lepton scattering experiments to determine moments of the structure functions. The variation with Q2 of these moments is used to derive values for Λ, taking into account corrections up to second order in αs. The fit to the data is very good.

We report a measurement of the negative pion electromagnetic form factor in the range of space-like four-momentum transfer 0.014 < q 2 < 0.122 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The measurement was made by the NA7 collaboration at the CERN SPS, by observing the interaction of 300 GeV pions with the electrons of a liquid hydrogen target. The form factor is fitted by a pole form with a pion radius of 〈r 2 〈 1 2 = 0.657 ± 0.012 fm.

Within the framework of the quark-parton model, the quark and anti-quark structure functions of the proton have been measured by fitting them to the distributions of the events in the Bjorkeny variable. The data used form the largest sample of neutrino and antineutrino interactions on a pure hydrogen target available, and come from exposures of BEBC to the CERN wide band neutrino and antineutrino beams. It is found that the ratiodv/uv of valence quark distributions falls with increasing Bjorkenx. In the context of the quark-parton model the results constrain the isospin composition of the accompanying diquark system. Models involving scattering from diquarks are in disagreement with the data.

We present measurement of the π0γ*γ, ηγ*γ and η′γ*γ form factors. The π0-form factor is for the first time observed in the space-like region. The transition form factor of the η-meson is determined from its decay modes π+π−π0, π+π−γ and the neutral decay mode γγ. The decay of the η′ is observed in the decay channels ργ, ηπ+π− with η→γγ and in the four charged prong final state stemming from ηπ+π− with the η decaying into π+π−(π0/γ). All form factors agree well with a simple ρ-pole predicted by the vector meson dominance model and also with the QCD inspired Brodsky-Lepage model.

Antinucleon-nucleus annihilations into two-body final states containing only one or no meson are unusual annihilations (Pontecorvo reactions), practically unexplored experimentally, with the exception of the channel p d → π − p , for which only two low-statistics measurements exist. Their physical interest lies in the possibility of exploring small-distance nuclear dynamics, in which an important role can be played by non-nucleonic degrees of freedom. A new measurement of the p d → π − p reaction rate at rest, performed with the OBELIX spectrometer at LEAR, with the best statistics up to now and a careful evaluation of systematic effects is reported, together with a critical analysis of the existing theoretical models. The measured branching ratio, which confirms the previous results, can represent a reference point for the studies in the field.

We have identified 262 doubly tagged two-photon events. A subset of the data shows an enhancement of 21 events in the inclusive two-photon mass squared distribution between 0.8 and 2.2 GeV 2 . This paper presents a study of events produced in 29-GeV electron-positron annihilation in which there are just two noncollinear charged particles, no detected photons, and two or more undetected particles. These events can be explained by attributing them primarily to the reactions e+e−→e+e−e+e− and e+e−→e+e−μ+μ− where just two particles appear in the Mark II detector. There is no evidence for unconventional sources for such events.

The UA2 experiment, running at the CERN SPS\(\bar pp\) Collider, has performed a study of events containing three hard jets in the final state. The angular distributions of the three jets show evidence for gluon bremsstrahlung, in good agreement with a QCD model to leading order in the strong coupling constant αs. The yield of three-jet events relative to that of two-jet events provides a measure of the strong coupling constant: ;3K3/K2=0.23±0.01±0.04, whereK2 andK3 represent the contributions arising from higher order corrections in α3 to the two- and three-jet exclusive cross-sections. This paper describes an analysis of sub-jet multiplicities, which are expected to be sensitive to the properties of soft gluon radiation, in hadronic decays of theZ0. Two- and three-jet event samples are selected using thek⊥ jet clustering algorithm at a jet resolution scaley1. The mean sub-jet multiplicity as a function of the sub-jet resolution,y0, is determined separately for both event samples by reapplying the same jet algorithm at resolution scalesy0<y1. These measurements are compared with recent perturbative QCD calculations based on the summation of leading and next-to-leading logarithms, and with QCD Monte Carlo models. The analytic calculations provide a good description of the sub-jet multiplicity seen in three- and two-jet mvents in the perturbative region (y0≈y1)), and the measured form of the data is in agreement with the expectation based on coherence of soft gluon radiation. The analysis provides good discrimination between Monte Carlo models, and those with a coherent parton shower are preferred by the data. The analysis suggests that coherence effects are present in the data.

We measured the inclusive electron-proton cross section in the nucleon resonance region (W < 2.5 GeV) at momentum transfers Q**2 below 4.5 (GeV/c)**2 with the CLAS detector. The large acceptance of CLAS allowed for the first time the measurement of the cross section in a large, contiguous two-dimensional range of Q**2 and x, making it possible to perform an integration of the data at fixed Q**2 over the whole significant x-interval. From these data we extracted the structure function F2 and, by including other world data, we studied the Q**2 evolution of its moments, Mn(Q**2), in order to estimate higher twist contributions. The small statistical and systematic uncertainties of the CLAS data allow a precise extraction of the higher twists and demand significant improvements in theoretical predictions for a meaningful comparison with new experimental results.

This paper completes the detailed presentation of our PV experiment on the 6S1/2 - 7S1/2 transition in Cs. A detailed description of the data acquisition and processing is given. The results of two independent measurements made on ΔF = 0 and ΔF =1 hfs components agree, providing an important cross-check. After a complete reanalysis of systematics and calibration, the precision is slightly improved, leading to the weighted average Im Epv 1/β = - 1.52 ± 0.18 mV/cm. Later results from an independent group agree quite well. With the semi-empirical value β = (26.8 ± 0.8) a30, our result yields Epv1 = (- 0.79 ± 0.10) x 10-11 i |e|a0. Coupled with the atomic calculations, this implies that the weak nuclear charge of Cs is Qw = -68 ± 9. This value agrees with the standard electroweak theory and leads to a weak interaction angle sin2 θ W = 0.21 ± 0.04. The complementarity of these measurements with high energy experiments is illustrated.

Combined of the two above measurements following the philosophy: quadratic sum of the statistical and systematic uncertainties and weighting each result by the squared reciprocal of that uncertainty. (7s)2S1/2 --> (6s)2S1/2 transitions.
Using the CELLO detector, we have measured cross sections for the processγγ→π+π− in the mass range 0.75–1.9 GeV/c2. A partial wave fit to the data indicates the presence of a sizeableS-wave amplitude with signs of resonant behaviour. Values for the γγ width of thef2(1270) are given, showing the model-dependence of this quantity. At higher dipion masses, the model of Brodsky and Lepage is found to give an order of magnitude description of the data.

We are reporting an improved determination of the electroweak mixing angle sin 2 Θ w from the ratio of ν μ e to ν μ e scattering cross sections. The CHARM II detector was exposed to neutrino and antineutrino wide band beams at the 450 GeV CERN SPS. Including new data collected in 1989 we have obtained 1316 ± 56 ν μ e and 1453 ± 62 ν μ e events. From the ratio of the visible cross sections we determined sin 2 Θ 0 =0.239 ± 0.009(stat) ± 0.007(syst) without radiative corrections and g V e g A e =0.047 ± 0.046 . Combining this last result with recent results on g A e at LEP we obtain g V e = −0.023 ± 0.023.
Systematic error presented includes error from flux normalization 'F'=1.030+- 0.022, no detaled description of the other sources and of the combination pr ocedure.. 'F'.
Without radiative corrections, systematic error combined in quadrature fromconponents listed under SYSTEMATICS.

Distributions of the Feynman x variable have been determined for positive and negative pions in charged current neutrino-proton and antineutrino-proton reactions with hadronic energy W > 3 GeV and Bjorken x B > 0.1. The distributions have been corrected for experimental effects such as measurement errors, uncertainties in estimating the neutrino energy and particle misidentification. In the framework of the quark-parton model, the distributions yield information about the fragmentation of forward going u and d quarks and backward going uu and ud diquarks. Approximate Feynman scaling is observed for the invariant Feynman x F distributions. They can be fitted by a power law of the form (1 − | x F |) n as suggested by the dimensional counting rules. Simple isospin relations predicted by the quark-parton model are fulfilled. The fragmentation of diquarks is compared with that of protons into π ± .

Antineutrino interactions in BEBC are compared to look for differences between the differential cross sections per nucleon in neon and in deuterium. The identical geometries, beam spectra and muon identification criteria and acceptances allow comparison with very small systematic errors. The results are compared in detail with μ and e scattering data from EMC and SLAC. We find no rise in the ratio d σ/ d x ( ν Ne )/σ/ d x ( ν D 2 ) at low x , independent of Q 2 up to Q 2 ∼ 14 GeV 2 .
