We have obtained the branching ratios for p p annihilation at rest into π + π − and K + K − in a pure p p initial angular momentum state L = 1. A gaseous hydrogen target at normal pressure and temperature was used and events associated with transitions of the antiprotonic atom to the 2p level were selected by detecting the Balmer X-ray series. The branching ratios for p p annihilation into π + π − and K + K − from the 2p state are (4.81 ± 0.49) × 10 −3 and (2.87 ± 0.51) × 10 −4 , respect The pion yield is slightly larger than in liquid hydrogen, where L = 0 annihilation dominates, while the kaon yield is suppressed by a factor of four. Using these and previous data, we derive the branching ratios for pp annihilation into all ππ and K K modes from S and P states. A measurement in gaseous hydrogen, without X-ray requirement, yields the branching ratios (4.30 ± 0.14) × 10 −3 and (6.92 ± 0.41) × 10 −4 . With the known branching ratios of (3.33 ± 0.17) × 10 −3 and (1.01 ± 0.05) × 10 −3 in liquid hydrogen, we find that (50.3 ± 6.4)% of all annihilations in gas at NTP occur in the initial angular momentum state L = 1.

p̄p total cross sections have been measured from 220 to 413 MeV/ c in small (⩽ 10 MeV/ c ) steps of momentum with statistics of ± 0.5 %. There is no evidence for structure in the cross section, and a limit of 8 mb MeV/ c 2 is set with 90% confidence on the strength of any narrow resonance down to 250 MeV/ c .

This is the first full solid angle analysis of large transverse energy events in\(p\bar p\) collisions at the CERN collider. Events with transverse energies in excess of 200 GeV at\(\sqrt s= 630 GeV\) are studied for any non-standard physics and quantitatively compared with expectations from perturbative QCD Monte Carlo models. A corrected differential cross section is presented. A detailed examination is made of jet profiles, event jet multiplicities and the fraction of the transverse energy carried by the two jets with the highest transverse jet energies. There is good agreement with standard theory for events with transverse energies up to the largest observed values\(( \approx \sqrt {s/2} )\) and the analysis shows no evidence for any non-QCD mechanism to account for the event characteristics.

Reactions p p → p p and p p → n n were studied at the kinetic energy 230 MeV of incident p by using bubble chamber films. Total cross sections for both of the reactions were found to be 51.2 ± 1.6 mb and 9.1 ± 0.6 mb, respectively. Differential cross sections are well explained by the phenomenological theory given by Bryan and Phillips.

We have made improved measurements of 43.8 ± 0.8, 41.3 ± 0.4 and 39.3 ± 0.8 mb for the p p elastic cross sections at 1.11, 1.33 and 1.52 GeV/ c laboratory momenta respectively. Sharp forward peaks in the differential cross sections with broad secondary maxima agree with previous observations [3–6]. The forward differential cross sections are (11 ± 3)% above the optical point in agreement with real amplitudes extended from lower momenta using dispersion relations [7]. The elastic cross sections do not show any structure in the s -channel. Backward differential cross sections show the onset of a “third diffraction peak” but no evidence for other structure in agreement with earlier experiments [6, 13].

Data on antiproton-proton cross sections at the c.m. energies 200 and 900 GeV are presented. The data were obtained at the CERN antiproton-proton Collider operated in a new pulsed mode in which the same beams were accelerated and decelerated between beam energies of 450 and 100 GeV. The properties of the machine determine the ratio of the luminosities at the two energies to about 1% and thus an accurate measurement of the ratioR of the inelastic cross sections could be made. We findR (=σ900/σ200)=1.20±0.01±0.02, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. Interpolating existing data to estimateσine1(200 GeV) this measurement ofR leads toσine1(900 GeV)=50.3+0.4+1.0 mb. Using an extrapolated value ofσe1/σtot we estimate the total cross section at 900 GeV to be 65.3±0.7±1.5 mb. Both the inelastic and total cross sections are compatible with a ln2s dependence. Comparisons are made with different fits to the total cross section energy dependence.

Antiproton-proton and proton-proton small-angle elastic scattering have been measured for centre-of-mass energies √ s = 30.7 and 62.5 GeV at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). Antiproton-proton and proton-proton total cross sections are obtained using the optical theorem. The measurement of the Coulomb scattering and its interference with the nuclear scattering allows a determination of the ratio of the real-to-imaginary part of the forward nuclear scattering amplitude. Also presented are measurements for the nuclear slope parameter at √ s = 62.5 GeV. Our new results reinforce the conclusions drawn recently from our measurements at √ s = 52.8 GeV. In particular, the pp̄ total cross section is rising at ISR energies and should continue to rise well beyond these energies.

Proton-antiproton and proton-proton elastic scattering have been measured in the four-momentum transfer range 0.001⩽| t |⩽0.06 GeV 2 for center-of-mass energy 52.8 GeV at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). Using the known pp total cross section, a simultaneous fit to the pp̄ and pp differential cross sections yields the pp̄ total cross section; in addition, we obtain the ratio of the real-to-imaginary part of the forward nuclear-scattering amplitude and the nuclear-slope parameter for both pp̄ and pp. Our results show conclusively that the pp̄ total cross section is rising at ISR energies and lend support to conventional theories in which the difference between the pp̄ and pp total cross section vanishes at very high energy.

A strong-focusing momentum channel has been arranged to form a beam from antiprotons produced by 6.0-Bev protons striking an internal target of the Bevatron. The channel consists of five 4-inch-diameter magnetic quadrupole lenses and two deflecting magnets adjusted to give a ±5% momentum interval. The antiprotons were selected from a large background of mesons by a scintillation counter telescope with a time-of-flight coincidence circuit having a resolution of ±2×10−9 second. This system allowed detection of approximately 400 antiprotons per hour. With a liquid hydrogen attenuator, the total antiproton-proton cross section at four different energies, 190, 300, 500, and 700 Mev, has been observed to be 135, 104, 97, and 94 mb, respectively. Also, the total cross sections for antiprotons incident on Be and C have been measured at two energies. The inelastic cross sections for carbon have been measured by observing the pulse heights produced by the interactions in a target of liquid scintillator. To measure the inelastic cross section for a high-Z element, lead wafers were immersed in the liquid scintillator, and to select inelastic events the pulse heights were measured.

The elastic, the pion-production, and the multipion-annihilation cross sections for antiproton-proton interactions at 3.28 and 3.66 BeV/c incident antiproton momenta have been measured. A comparison of the elastic interactions at 3.28 BeV/c with a purely-absorbing disc optical model gave a best value for the radius of interaction of 1.3 F. The real part of the forward scattering amplitude has been found to be less than 20% of the imaginary part. An extensive investigation of antiproton-proton interactions at 5.7 GeV/c without strange-particle production was carried out using a hydrogen bubble chamber. Cross-sections for different channels are given and discussed. The reliability of the analysis was checked using artificially generated events. The cross-sections for elastic scattering, for all processes involving annihilation, and for all other inelastic processes are respectively σel=(16.3±0.6)mb,σannlbil=(22.5±2.0)mb, σinel=(24.8±2.0)mb. TheN * 1:38 is present both in the single and multiple pion production channels. For the reaction MediaObjects/11539_2007_Article_BF02720569_f1.jpg a cross-section of (1.05±0.21) mb was obtained. Cross-sections forN * 1238 production in other channels are also given. Some indication of the presence ofI=1/2 isobars was found in the nucleon-pion and the nucleon-two-pion systems. The inelastic nonannihilation reactions were found to be strongly peripheral. The one-pion exchange model including either a form factor or corrections for absorption was applied to the reaction MediaObjects/11539_2007_Article_BF02720569_f2.jpg . Neither version of the model could correctly account for all features of the reaction. The average number of pions in the annihilation was found to be 7.3±0.6. The presence of an asymmetry in the angular distribution of the charged pions was confirmed at this energy; it is due mostly to high-energy pions. The production of ρ and ω mesons was observed in various annihilation channels. Rates of up to 80% for ρ production and up to 15% for ω production were obtained by fitting phase-space and Breit-Wigner curves to the effective-mass distributions of different channels.

An experiment using the Fermilab Single Arm Spectrometer (SAS) facility and an associated nonmagnetic vertex detector studied the reactions a+p→c+X, where a and c were π±, K±, p, or p¯. Extensive measurements were made at 100 and 175 GeV/c beam momenta with the outgoing hadrons detected in the SAS covering a kinematic range 0.12<x<1.0 and pT<1.25 GeV/c. Additional data covering a more restricted range in x were also gathered at 70 GeV/c incident momentum. In this high-statistics experiment, the identification of both the incoming and outgoing charged hadrons were made with a total of eight Čerenkov counters. The inclusive production of photons in\(\bar pp\) interactions has been studied at incident momentum of 12 GeV/c. Topological cross section has been presented and KNO distribution for\(\bar pp\) interactions has been studied. Inclusive cross section for γ production has been measured to be 149.5±8.8 mb. Bulk of these photons come from π0 decays whose cross section has been evaluated independently to be 60.4±7.9 mb. Signals of η and ω have been seen in γγ and π+π-π0 decay modes and their inclusive cross sections have been estimated to be 14.9±8.8 mb and 14.6±7.0 mb respectively. Results on average multiplicities of γ and two particle correlation parameters are presented. Neutral pions seem to be more strongly correlated than the charged pions. The inclusive distributions of the Feynmanx andpT/2 of the photons are compared with expectation from charged pions on the basis of charge independence. Energy dependence of the normalised invariant distributions has been studied. The distribution of the scaling variablez of photons ine+e− and\(\bar pp\) interactions has been compared.

The small-angle elastic scattering for pp at s=23.5, 30.7, and 52.8 GeV and for p¯p at s=52.8 GeV are measured. The data are normalized on Coulomb scattering. Using the optical theorem and the best estimate of the real part of the forward scattering amplitude, ρ(pp¯)=0.1, we obtain σtot(p¯p)=44.1±2.9 mb for the total cross section and b(p¯p)=13.6±2.2 GeV−2 for the nuclear slope parameter. This supports the dispersion relation prediction that σtot(p¯p) will start to rise above Elab≈200 GeV.

We measured the differential cross section for p̄p and pp elastic scattering in the momentum-transfer range 0.01 <| t | < 1.0 GeV 2 at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings with center-of-mass energy s = 52.8 GeV . Fitting the differential cross section with an exponential [ A exp ( bt )], we found b p p = 13.92 ± 0.59 GeV −2 for | t | < 0.05 GeV 2 , whilst for | t | > 0.09 GeV 2 , b p p = 10.68 ± 0.26 GeV −2 . Using the optical theorem, we obtained for the total cross section σ tot ( p p)= 44.86 ± 0.78 mb and, by integrating the differential cross section, we obtained for the total elastic cross section σ el ( p p) = 7.89 ± 0.28 mb . Calculations of σ tot combining elastic-rate and total-rate measurements are also given. All of these measurements were also performed for pp scattering at the same energy, and the results for both reactions are compared.
