The total and differential cross sections of the K¯0p→Λπ+ and K¯0p→∑0π+ reactions have been measured in the centre-of-mass energy range of l.5 to 2.3 GeV. Using our K¯0p→∑0π+ data as well as available cross-section data of isospin related channels, we have calculated the total I=0K¯N→∑π cross section as function of energy. The results are compared with predictions obtained from K¯N phase-shift analyses.

Qausi-elastic ω production by ep scattering in the kinematic region 0.3. < Q 2 < 1.4 GeV 2 and 1.7 < W < 2.8 GeV was studied using a streamer chamber at DESY. The production angular distribution for γ V p → ω p has a strong non-peripheral component for W < 2 GeV. The ω production cross section falls by a factor of 4 as W changes from 1.7 to 2.8 GeV. In contrast the cross section for ω production with | t | < 0.5 GeV 2 is W independent between 1.7 and 2.8 GeV and for W > 2.0 GeV consistent in both W and Q 2 dependence with the predictions of a model based on one-pion exchange and diffraction.

We have measured the cross sections at 90° c.m. for π± and π0 photoproduction with polarized photons. The photon energies ranged from 0.8 to 2.2 GeV. The target asymmetry T = ( σ ↑ − σ ↓)/( σ ↑ + σ ↓) for the reaction γ p → π + n has been measured at the Bonn 2.5 GeV electron synchrotron for a pion c.m. angle of 40° and γ energies between 0.5 and 2.2 GeV. Butanol was used as the target material. About 35% of the protons could be polarized using the dynamic-polarization method in a continuous-flow cryostat operating at 1°K and 25 kG. The π + mesons were detected in a magnetic-spectrometer system. Considerable structure in the asymmetry was observed.

Cross sections, differential cross sections, and hyperon polarization results are presented for the reactions K¯0p→Λπ+ and K¯0p→Σ0π+ in the momentum interval 1 to 12 GeV/c. Emphasis is placed on the comparison of Λ and Σ channels, and on the momentum dependences of the data. In particular, the Λ polarization data are consistent with being independent of energy above 2 GeV/c; and the slopes of the forward cross sections are found to increase toward the slope values for the line-reversed reactions πp→K(Λ,Σ) as energy increases.

The reaction γ V p → p π + π − was studied in the W , Q 2 region 1.3–2.8 GeV, 0.3–1.4 GeV 2 using the streamer chamber at DESY. A detailed analysis of rho production via γ V p→ ϱ 0 p is presented. Near threshold rho production has peripheral and non-peripheral contributions of comparable magnitude. At higher energies ( W > 2 GeV) the peripheral component is dominant. The Q 2 dependence of σ ( γ V p→ ϱ 0 p) follows that of the rho propagator as predicted by VDM. The slope of d σ /d t at 〈 Q 2 〉 = 0.4 and 0.8 GeV 2 is within errors equal to its value at Q 2 = 0. The overall shape of the ϱ 0 is t dependent as in photoproduction, but is independent of Q 2 . The decay angular distribution shows that longitudinal rhos dominate in the threshold region. At higher energies transverse rhos are dominant. Rho production by transverse photons proceeds almost exclusively by natural parity exchange, σ T N ⩾ (0.83 ± 0.06) σ T for 2.2 < W < 2.8 GeV. The s -channel helicity-flip amplitudes are small compared to non-flip amplitudes. The ratio R = σ L / σ T was determined assuming s -channel helicity conservation. We find R = ξ 2 Q 2 / M ϱ 2 with ξ 2 ≈ 0.4 for 〈 W 〉 = 2.45 GeV. Interference between rho production amplitudes from longitudinal and transverse photons is observed. With increasing energy the phase between the two amplitudes decreases. The observed features of rho electroproduction are consistent with a dominantly diffractive production mechanism for W > 2 GeV.

From a muon-proton scattering experiment with a streamer chamber at the Stanford Linear Accelerator we present results in the ranges 0.3<Q2<4.7 GeV2 and 1.7<W<4.7 GeV for the reactions μ+p→μpV where V is a vector meson (ρ0, ω, or φ). It is shown that in ρ production the skewing parameter and the longitudinal-transverse ratio change significantly as Q2 increases above 1 GeV2. The cross section for ρ0 production as a function of Q2 falls below the vector-meson-dominance prediction. The ratio of the cross section for exclusive vector-meson production to the total cross section falls by a factor of 10 between photoproduction and a Q2 of 2 GeV2, yet the ratio of ω to ρ production remains constant at the photoproduction value out to Q2>2 GeV2.

Measurements of C LL of pp elastic scattering near θ c.m. = 90° at thirteen energies between 300 and 800 MeV are reported. These, together with previous values of C NN , are used to extract values of two quantities, ƒ s and ƒ t , which contain only spin-singlet and only coupled spin-triplet partial waves, respectively. The ƒ s curve, which is not dependent on C LL , exhibits the behavior expected for the previously conjectured 1 D 2 resonance. The ƒ t curve also exhibits a resonance-like behavior, which could be due either to the 3 P 0 or the 3 P 2 partial wave.

Recent data are presented on spin-spin correlation parameters CLL=(L,L;0,0) and CSL=(S,L;0,0) at forward angles from 1.18 to 2.47 GeV/c incident momenta in proton-proton elastic scattering. Values for ΔσL (inelastic) are derived and are shown to disagree with predictions of theoretical models attempting to describe p−p scattering without dibaryon resonances. Finally, the CLL and CSL data discriminate among various phase-shift solutions, and will lead to a clarification of the p−p phase shifts.

Measurements are reported of the difference ΔσL between proton-proton total cross sections for parallel and antiparallel spin states and of the parameter CLL for proton-proton elastic scattering near 90°, for thirteen energies between 300 and 800 MeV. The ΔσL results agree well with previous ANL ZGS and SIN data, but disagree with recent results from TRIUMF. Attempts to understand the cause of the discrepancy have been unsuccessful, but possible sources are discussed. The ΔσL and CLL results have been used with other experimental data to extract quantities which depend only on spin-singlet, coupled spin-triplet, and spin-triplet partial waves. Structure is found in these quantities, which appears to be associated with the resonantlike D21 and F33 partial waves. Additional similar structure is also found, which may be due either to the P03 partial wave or the (P23,F23) partial-wave pair.

We present first measurements of total cross section differences Δσ T and Δσ L for a polarized neutron beam transmitted through a polarized proton target. Measurements were carried out at SATURNE II, at 0.63, 0.88, 0.98 and 1.08 GeV. The first spin-transfer observables for the πd→pp reaction have been measured at a number of energies spanning the Δ resonance in this system. These parameters correspond to KSL and KSS of the pp→dπ reaction for incident proton energies ranging from 600 to 800 MeV. Such data can provide an important constraint on the determination of the partial-wave amplitudes describing this fundamental reaction. The discrepancies between our data, theoretical predictions, and values calculated from published partial-wave amplitudes demonstrate the need for further work in this area.

Measurements are presented for several mixtures of the spin observables CSS,CSL=CLS, CLL, and CNN for neutron-proton elastic scattering.
