$\pi^-$ - p interactions at 775 {MeV}

The interactions of 775 MeV (kinetic energy) π−-mesons in a hydrogen bubble chamber have been studied. Total and partial crosssections have been determined with the following results: σ (total) = (39.0±1.6) mb, σ (elastic)=(14.8±0.7) mb, σ (π− + p → all neutrals) = (9.0 ± 0.5) mb, σ (π− + p = π− + π+ + n) = (9.8 ± 0.5) mb, and σ (π− + p = π− + p + π0) = (4.8 ± 0.3) mb. The elastic-scattering angular distribution has been fitted with a Legendre polynomial series terminated at the fifth order. Various angular and effective-mass distributions of single-π production are presented and discussed in terms of the Olsson-Yodh and O.P.E. models.

Elastic Scattering of Negative Pions on Protons in the Energy Range 500-1000 MeV

Differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of negative pi mesons on protons (π−−p→π−−p) were measured at the Berkeley Bevatron at five laboratory kinetic energies of the pion between 500 and 1000 MeV. The results were least-squares fitted with a power series in the cosine of the center-of-mass scattering angle, and total elastic cross sections for π−−p→π−−p were obtained by integrating under the fitted curves. The coefficients of the cosine series are shown plotted versus the incident pion laboratory kinetic energy. These curves display as a striking feature a large value of the coefficient of cos5θ* peaking in the vicinity of the 900-MeV resonance. This implies that a superposition of F52 and D52 partial waves is prominent in the scattering at this energy, since the coefficients for terms above cos5θ* are negligible. One possible explanation is that the F52 enhancement comes from an elastic resonance in the isotopic spin T=12 state, consistent with Regge-pole formalism, and the D52 partial-wave state may be enhanced by inelastic processes. At 600 MeV the values of the coefficients do not seem to demand the prominence of any single partial-wave state, although the results are compatible with an enhancement in the J=32 amplitude. A table listing quantum numbers plausibly associated with the various peaks and "shoulders" seen in the π±−p total cross-section curves is presented.

Coulomb-Nuclear Interference in pi+- p and K+- p Elastic Scattering Below 3-GeV: Measurements, Real Parts and K+- p Dispersion Relations

The differential cross sections for π + p elastic scattering at0.6, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, GeV/ c for π - p at 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 GeV/ c , for K - p at 1.2, 1.8, 2.6 GeV/ c and for K - p at 0.9, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, 2.6 GeV/ c have been measured with an overall accuracy ofthe order of 1 to 2% in an electronics experiment over the angular region corresponding to momentum transfer t between 0.0005 and 0.10 GeV 2 . Making use of the interference effects between the Coulomb and the nuclear interaction, we have determined the magnitude and sign of the real part of the scattering amplitude near t = 0. The K ± p real parts have been used in a dispersion relation to derive the value of the KNΛ coupling constant.

Pi+- proton elastic scattering at 180 degrees from 0.60 to 1.60 gev/c

The differential cross section for π±−p elastic scattering at 180° was measured from 0.572 to 1.628 GeVc using a double-arm scintillation-counter spectrometer with an angular acceptance θ* in the center-of-mass system defined by −1.00≤cosθ*≤−0.9992. The π+−p cross section exhibits a large dip at 0.737 GeVc and a broad peak centered near 1.31 GeVc. The π−−p cross section exhibits peaks at 0.69, 0.97, and 1.43 GeVc.

Measurement of the pi- p elastic scattering cross-section near 180 degrees between 600 and 1280 mev/c

Differential cross sections for π−p elastic scattering over the angular range 155° to 177° in the center-of-mass system have been measured at 33 incident pion momenta in the range 600 to 1280 MeV/c. The experiment, which was performed at the Bevatron at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, employed a liquid hydrogen target, a double-arm spectrometer, and standard counter techniques to detect the elastic events. The data from this experiment are compared to all other published data in this momentum region. The over-all agreement is good. The data of this experiment are also compared with the results of the recent phase-shift analysis by Almehed and Lovelace. In the momentum region between 700 and 900 MeV/c, the slope of the backward angular distribution goes rapidly through zero from negative to positive, and the magnitude of the differential cross section falls by more than a factor of 10. Momentum-dependent structure is seen in the extrapolated differential cross sections at 180°. Two prominent dips in the 180° differential cross sections appear at 880 and 1150 MeV/c. This structure is discussed in terms of a direct-channel resonance model that assumes only resonant partial waves are contributing to the cross sections for large scattering angles.
