Data on inclusive jet production in the transverse-momentum (p⊥) range 0-8 GeV/c for 200-GeV/c p, π−, π+, K−, K+, and p¯ incident on a hydrogen target are presented. The jet cross section is fully corrected for losses and biases, and compared with the predictions of a model based on quantum chromodynamics. Both the absolute cross section and the inclusive charged-particle distributions inside and outside the jet are in qualitative agreement with the model.

The charmonium χ states are observed in both π− and p Be interactions near 200 GeV/c via their radiative decay into J/ψ. The χ(3510) and χ(3555) are produced with roughly equal cross sections in π− collisions while the χ(3555) dominates in p collisions. Simple gluon fusion can account for χ production with incident protons but additional mechanisms are needed for incident π−.

We present here the analysis of low mass dimuon events (1.8 < M μμ < 2.6 GeV / c 2 ) produced by positive and negative pion and proton beams at 200 GeV / c . Using the difference between the π - and the π + cross sections, and comparing to the Drell-Yan model, we find a K -factor of 2.47 ± 0.5. Only about 1 2 of the events can be attributed to the Drell-Yan mechanism. If the remaining events are attributed to muonic decays of D mesons we findan upper limit for the cross section of charmed meson production.

New results on the forward produced protons and antiprotons in high energy muon-nucleon scattering are presented. Their W 2 , z and p 2 T dependences are compared with those of the other charged hadrons. Significant differences are observed which can be related to the flavour content of the target and to a difference between the baryon content of quark and gluon jets.

Significant two-particle correlations of dynamical origin are observed in 200 GeV/c π−p inclusive interactions. This is demonstrated by comparison with kinematic correlations calculated from an independent-particle-emission model. Two distinct correlation types are observed: (a) unlike-particle correlations with correlation length ∼ 1.3 rapidity units independent of azimuthal separation, and (b) like-particle correlations with correlation length ∼ 0.4 rapidity units which are observed only for small azimuthal separations.

Nucleon structure functions obtained from neutrino and anti-neutrino scattering on iron nuclei at high energies (Ev=30 to 250 GeV) are presented. These results are compared with the results of other lepton-nucleon scattering experiments. The structure functions are used to test the validity of the Gross-Llewellyn-smith sum rule, which measures the number of valence quarks in the nucleons, and to obtain leading and second order QCD fits.

We have measured the ratio of inclusive production of η to π0 at transverse momenta above 1.5 GeV/c. Results are presented for various meson and proton beams with momenta of 100, 200, and 300 GeV/c incident upon a hydrogen target. The ηπ0 production ratio is found to be independent of incident beam momentum and of the transverse and longitudinal momenta of production. The ratio for pion- and proton-induced reactions is 0.44 ± 0.05; for kaons, it is 0.74 ± 0.12.

We report results from a measurement of the inclusive processes pp→Xp and pd→Xd in the range 5<Mx2s<0.1, 0.01≲|t|≲0.1 (GeV/c)2, and incident proton momenta of 65, 154, and 372 GeV/c. Both pp and pd data show an exponential t dependence and a dominant 1Mx2 behavior for Mx2s≲0.05. We have measured large-transverse-momentum (p⊥) inclusive π0 production at c.m. angles centered near 90° for π±p and pp interactions at 100 and 200 GeV/c. This is the first such measurement using a pion beam. The ratio σ(pp→π0X)σ(πp→π0X) decreases with increasing p⊥ and is independent of energy when expressed as a function of x⊥=p⊥pmax. We compare the data with predictions of various models.

For the reaction π−N→V0X, where V0 is a Ks0, Λ, and Λ¯ and X are charged particles, we measured the transverse- and longitudinal-momentum distributions, and inclusive cross sections for the V0 and for K*±(892), Σ±(1385), and Ξ±(1321). We compare our results with predictions of quark-counting rules, and conclude that valence quarks play an important role in strange-particle production.

The Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber, filled with a heavy neon-hydrogen mix, was exposed to a narrow-band νμ beam. Based on the observation of 830 charged-current νμ interactions, the cross section was found consistent with a linear rise with the neutrino energy in the interval 10 GeV<~Eν≲240 GeV. The average slope was determined to be σνEν=(0.62±0.05)×10−38 cm2 GeV−1.

Results of two studies of small angle elastic scattering are presented. The first experiment measured hadron-nucleus elastic scattering at 70, 125, 175 GeV/c incident momentum. The second experiment is a high statistics study of hadron-proton elastic scattering at 200 GeV/c incident momentum. Hadron-nucleus elastic scattering was measured for $\mu^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $p$, and $\bar{p}$ scatterinq from Be, C, Al, Cu, Sn, and Pb targets at .incident beam momenta of 70 and 175 GeV/c and for $\mu^+$, $K^+$, and $p$ scattering from Be, Al, and Pb targets at an incident beam momentum of 125 GeV/c. In all cases the minimum -t is 0.001 $(GeV/c)^2$ ; the maximum -t is 0.07, 0.16. 0.30 ($GeV/c)^2$ for incident beam momenta of 70, 125, 175 GeV/c respectively. Parameterizations of the differential cross section, $d\sigma/dt$, in the forward direction are presented....

This Letter reports measurements of the ratios of $\pi$, K, and p production at large values of transverse momentum in $\pi^- −p$ collisions. The charge ratios, such as $\frac {\pi^−} {\pi^+}$, $\frac {K^−} {K^+}$, and $\frac {\overline{p}}{p}$ are seen to be quite different from those measured in p −p collisions. These ratios are sensitive tests of hard-scattering models, and are compared with theoretical predictions. The particle ratios have also been studied as a function of center-of-mass angle ($\theta^*$) at $\theta^*$ = 90°, 77°, and 60°.

Measurements of inclusive scattering in the target-fragmentation region are extended to higher incident energy. The combined data set shows departures from an approach to the asymptotic scaling limit as A+Bs−12 that are significant even at the highest energies. When these departures are taken into account, the data approach a limit that is consistent with equal cross sections induced by particles and antiparticles and with Pomeron factorization. The corrections to A+Bs−12 are so large that detailed tests of Mueller-Regge relationships are not conclusive.

We present results from a direct photon pair search performed with the NA3 spectrometer, using incident positive and negative beams at 200 GeV/ c interacting with a carbon target. The experiment is sensitive to photons with p T >1.8 GeV / c and −0.4⩽y ∗ ⩽1.0 , one in each arm of the apparatus. A 3 standard deviation signal is seen in τ − and p interactions. The cross section is higher than the second order QCD calculations, but systematic errors are large.

We compare high-transverse-momentum (P⊥) inclusive π0 production from π−, K−, p, and p¯ beams, at 100 and 200 GeV/c, for center-of-mass (c.m.) angles ranging from 2° to 115° and P⊥<4.5 GeV/c. The ratio σ(pp→π0X)σ(πp→π0X) decreases with increasing P⊥, and changes dramatically with c.m. angle. Also, the ratios σ(K−p→π0X)σ(π−p→π0X) and σ(p¯p→π0X)σ(pp→π0X) are approximately constant. These measurements are consistent with a theoretical viewpoint in which constituents of the incident hadrons undergo a hard-scattering subprocess.

Inclusive charged-current interactions of high-energy neutrinos and antineutrinos have been studied with high statistics in a counter experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The energy dependence of the total cross-sections, the longitudinal structure function, and the nucleon structure functionsF2,xF3, and\(\bar q^{\bar v} \) are determined from these data. The analysis of theQ2-dependence of the structure functions is used to test quantum chromodynamics, to determine the scale parameter Λ and the gluon distribution in the nucleon.

Total cross sections have been measured for the transmission of long-lived neutral K mesons through hydrogen and deuterium. The momentum range for the KL0 was 130-550 MeV/c. The momentum of each detected kaon was measured by time of flight. The cross sections are consistent with earlier less precise results. Comparison of the KL0 cross sections is made with the results of several K-matrix fits to other K¯N data, and the KL0 total cross sections are compared with existing theoretical calculations for K−d total cross sections.

We have measured the differential cross section for small angle p−p scattering from 25 to 200 GeV incident energy and in the momentum transfer range 0.015<|t|<0.080 (GeVc)2. We find that the slope of the forward diffraction peak, b(s), increases with energy and can be fitted by the form b(s)=b0+2α′ lns, where b0=8.3±1.3 and α′=0.28±0.13 (GeVc)−2. Such dependence is compatible with the data existing both at higher and lower energies. We have also obtained the energy dependence of the p−p total cross section in the energy range from 48 to 196 GeV. Within our errors which are ± 1.1 mb the total cross section remains constant.

The measurements were carried out with a neutron beam by using the standard transmission technique and a liquid-hydrogen target. We report the results of an experiment which measured n-p elastic scattering differential cross sections over a range in -t from 0.15 to ~ 3.6 (Gev/c)2 for incident neutron momenta from 70 to 400 GeV/c. We find the logarithmic slope parameter, evaluated at -t = 0.2 (GeV/c)2, to be consistent with existing proton-proton parameterizations. The data exhibit a dip in the cross section near -t 1.4 (Gev/c)2 for incident neutron momenta above 200 Gev/c. For neutron momenta less than 280 GeV/c, the neutron-proton cross sections are found to be higher than existing proton-proton data in the range 0.7 ~ -t ~ 1.3 (Gev/c)2 which is in contradic- tion to most Regge predictions.

Inclusive and semi-inclusive cross sections for gp0 production in 100, 200, and 360 GeV/c π−p interactions are presented. Differential cross sections for ρ0 production as functions of c.m. rapidity and transverse momentum are compared with the corresponding differential cross sections for pion production. Effects of various methods of estimating background on the values obtained for ρ0 production cross sections are discussed. About 10% of the final-state charged pions appear to come from ρ0 decay. Thus, while ρ0 production and decay is a significant source of final-state pions, other sources must contribute the majority of the produced pions.

Using data from the Fermilab 15 ft hydrogen bubble chamber, we have studied inclusive ϱ 0 production in antineutrino-proton charged-current interactions. We measure (0.21 ± 0.03) ϱ 0 /event, corresponding to ϱ 0 / π − =0.12 ± 0.02. As a function of Q 2 and for hadronic masses above a threshold region, the ϱ 0 / π − ratio shows little variation. At least 50% of the ϱ 0 's are consistent with coming from the current fragmentation region. We have measured π+p, π−p, and pp elastic scattering at an incident-beam momentum of 200 GeV/c in the region of −t, four-momentum transfer squared, from 0.021 to 0.665 (GeV/c)2. The data allow an investigation of the t dependence of the logarithmic forward slope parameter b≡(ddt)(lndσdt). In addition to standard parametrization, we use functional forms suggested by the additive quark model to fit the measured dσdt distributions. Within the context of this model we estimate the size of the clothed quark in the pion and proton. Limits on the elastic-scattering amplitude derived from unitarity bounds are checked, and no violations are observed.
