We have made the first observations of Ξ − production in p p interactions at √ s =540 GeV. In a sample of 6964 non single-diffractive events we observe 17 Ξ − decays with an estimated background of less than one event. This corresponds to 0.04 ± 0.01 Ξ − per event in the transverse momentum range p t >1.0 GeV/ c and in the pseudorapidity range |η| < 3.5. Assuming an exponential p t distribution, we find 〈 p t 〉=1.1 −0.2 +0.3 GeV/ c .

The production of very large transverse momentum hadron jets has been measured in the UA2 experiment at the CERN p p Collider for s = 540 GeV using a highly segmented calorimeter. The range of previously available cross sections for inclusive jet production is extended to p T = 150 GeV and the two-jet invariant mass distribution to m jj = 280 GeV with the largely increased data sample collected during the 1983 running period. The results are compared with the predictions of QCD models.

We show that the transverse momentum distributions resemble those in high-energy pp interactions and discuss the influence of annihilation processes on the p T 2 distributions. The invariant inclusive cross section for pions in the central region is found to be 28 ± 1 mb. A charge asymmetry is indicated by the y ∗ spectrum in the central region, the asymmetry parameter having the value 0.15 ± 0.01. Finally, we estimate the upper limit of the diffraction dissociation of the beam particle to be 3.68 −0.15 +0.45 mb.

The inclusive production of K̄ ∗ (890) and K̄ ∗ (1420) is studied in K̄ − p interactions at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . At 10 GeV/ c an enhancement in the ( K ̄ 0 π − ) mass distribution is found at 1.74 GeV, but no clear signal is seen at 16 GeV/ c . The fraction of K 0 ' s coming from decay of the K ∗ (890) or K ∗ (1420) is large, being (50 ± 6)% and (45 ± 5)% at 10 and 16 GeV/ c , respectively. Inclusive production of Λ and Λ in K + p interactions is studied at incident momenta of 8.2 and 16.0 GeV/ c . Cross sections and single-particle distributions are presented, the correlation between longitudinal and transverse momentum is investigated, and the dependence of average charge multiplicity on missing mass measured. For Λ production, early scaling is observed in the target fragmentation region when the data are presented in terms of ( M 2 - M th 2 )/ s and t , where M th is the threshold value of the missing mass M . Furthermore, a triple-Regge analysis in these variable yields an effective exchange trajectory which passes through the K, Q and L mesons. There is evidence for beam fragmentation in Λ and Λ production, but the contributions seem not to be dominant in the fragmentation region. Nevertheless, the parameter values in a triple-Regge description are estimated, and together with those for target fragmentation in Λ production, provide a complete description of the fragmentation contributions to the two reactions. Integration of the resultant distribution functions over the complete Chew-Low plot yields fragmentation cross sections increasing approximately as log s ; in addition the observed features of the x , p L and p T 2 projections and of the p L - p T correlation are well-described in the fragmentation regions. We have investigated inclusive Λ , Λ and Σ ± (1385) productions in 405 GeV/ c pp interactions. The observed cross sections are σ ( Λ )=4.05±0.39 mb, σ( Λ =0.63±0.17 mb, σ ( Σ + (1385))=0.74±0.17 mb and σ ( Λ − (1385))=0.56±0.17 mb. Λ production is dominant in a central region of ∣ x ∣≤0.4. The Λ/ Λ production ratio at ∣ x ∣≈0 is found to be 1.2±0.5. The excess, about 0.2 mb, of σ ( Λ + (1385)) over σ ( Λ − (1385)) is most likely attributed to proton fragmentations (∣ x ∣≥0.4), and gives an evidence for scaling.

Results of a Fermilab experiment using the 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber are reported, with the main emphasis on pion production in the central region. Single-particle inclusive and semi-inclusive distributions in rapidity, Feynman x, and pT2 for both π− and π+ are presented and compared with results of other experiments. Two-particle distributions are investigated using the correlation-function formalism. The relation between inclusive and semi-inclusive correlation functions is discussed. The semi-inclusive correlation functions in rapidity are found to have short-range character compatible with the ideas of independent-cluster-emission models. Evidence for effects due to Bose-Einstein statistics of like particles is found by comparing the joint correlation function in rapidity and azimuthal angle, as well as the charged multiplicity associated with transverse momentum in the like- and unlike-charge combinations. Data on the average associated transverse momentum are also presented. The inclusive and semi-inclusive three-particle distributions are presented for all charge combinations. The inclusive three-particle correlations are found to be small for events with more than four particles in the final state. Two independent ways were found in which three-particle densities can be expressed in terms of one- and two-particle densities.

We have investigated the inclusive production of γ, KS0, Λ0, and Λ¯0 in 100-GeV/c p¯p interactions in the 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber at Fermilab. We present various inclusive distributions and compare them with corresponding distributions in 100-GeV/c pp interactions and lower-energy p¯p interactions. We find some evidence for Σ(1385) production but none for K*(890) production. We find evidence for a nonzero Λ0 polarization of -0.45 ± 0.21.

We have studied inclusive Δ++(1236) production for |tpΔ|<1.0 (GeV/c)2 in a 50 000 picture exposure of the 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber to a 205 GeV/c proton beam. The inclusive Δ++ cross section for one hemisphere in the center-of-mass system is (1.30±0.14) mb. The mean charged multiplicity of the system recoiling off the Δ++ is in agreement with that for laboratory π−p interactions at the same energy in the center-of-mass frame. The inclusive Δ++ production is compared to inclusive Λ0 and proton production in the same experiment. The connection between Δ++ production and diffraction is discussed. We find that not all Δ++ come from the decay of a diffractively-produced state. The PT2 distribution for the Δ++ has a slope of (10.5±0.9) (GeV/c)−2 for PT2≲0.2 (GeV/c)2. This slope, together with the decay angular distribution of the Δ++ at small momentum transfer, suggests a strong pion-exchange contribution to the inclusive process. We compare the data to the expectation of a triple-Regge model with ρ- and π-exchange contributions.

Inclusive proton production in pp interactions at 205 GeV/c is studied using the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) 30-in. bubble chamber. The invariant cross section is presented in terms of several kinematic variables and compared with similar data obtained from counter experiments at Fermilab and at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). An important feature of this experiment is that it provides data for much wider ranges of the four-momentum transfer than have been attained in the counter experiments. It also gives full information on the associated charged-particle multiplicity of every event, thus permitting a detailed investigation of how various kinematic quantities depend on this parameter.

The measurements of the z and p T 2 distribution of hadrons produced in the interactions of 200 GeV muons with copper and carbon nuclei are shown in different x Bj and virtual photon energy intervals. Effects of the jet scattering are seen at the lowest virtual photon energies while for energies above 70 GeV there is no evidence of these effects. Comparison with a theoretical model indicates that at high jet energies the parton fragmentation distance is greater than the nuclear radius and that the parton absorption cross section is less than 10 mb.

The production of the Δ ++ as a function of the variables χ BJ , W , Q 2 , χ F and p T 2 is investigated. Lambda production is studied in K − p interactions at 32 GeV/ c . The total Λ cross section is 2.31±0.03 mb . Using the measured Λγ combinations we find that (31±4)% of all Λ's are produced via the Σ 0 → Λγ decay. About 60% of the Λ's are associated with either a N N or K K pair; about 40% of the Λ's are produced through the hypercharge annihiltion reaction K − p→ Λ + π 'a. The two-peak structure of the invariant x distribution can be related to fragmentation processes. The Λ is found to be unpolarized in the target fragmentation region, whereas a transverse polarization is observed for forward produced Λ's. As a function of p ⊥, a polarization effect is measured at medium p ⊥.

The production of K S 0 , Λ and Λ is measured in π + p reactions at 16 GeV/ c . The total strange particle cross section is found to be 4.0 ± 0.3 mb, about 20% of the inelastic cross section. Cross sections for single strange particles and for strange particle pairs are determined, both inclusively and as functions of the charged multiplicity. Relative production rates for different strange particle combinations are compared with the prediction of the isospin statistical model. Inclusive spectra for single particles are studied and it is found the K S 0 are produced mostly in the forward hemisphere, most probably by fragmentation of the incident pion into K K π . Results of the experimental study of inclusive φ meson production off berillium nuclei by 70 GeV/ c protons in the beam fragmentation region x > 0.41 are presented. Fitting of the measured differential cross sections to the forms d σ d x ∼ (1 − x) n x and d σ d p 2 t ∼ exp (−bp 2 t ) gives the parameters n = 6.0 ± 1.7 and b = (2.4 ± 0.7) (GeV/ c ) −2 . In the framework of a quark-parton model the measured φ meson x -distribution suggests that in the region of x > 0.41 nearly 90% of the φ mesons are produced via a strange sea quark fusion. The ratio of the OZI-forbidden and OZI-allowed transition coupling constants has been found to be ten times smaller than the same ratio calculated from the partial decay widths. The total inclusive cross section is estimated to be σ (pN → φ X) = (0.7 ± 0.2) × 10 −27 cm 2 .

We present results from a direct photon pair search performed with the NA3 spectrometer, using incident positive and negative beams at 200 GeV/ c interacting with a carbon target. We have studied muon-produced hadrons from a deuterium target. The structure functions and the charge ratios are reported for neutrons; the transverse momentum and azimuthal distributions are reported for deuterons. The structure function for the neutron is similar to that of the proton. The charge ratio of produced hadrons follows the expectation of a simple spin-½ quark model. Transverse-momentum results agree with those at lower energy and are similar to those from hadron-hadron interactions. No azimuthal anisotropy is seen.

Invariant mass spectrum of μ + μ − pairs produced by 70 GeV/ c protons in Be target are presented. Distinct enhancements in the mass regions of ϱ, ω mesons, φ meson and J/ψ particle are observed. For J/ψ production x and p ⊥ 2 distributions are given. The total cross section for the reaction p + Be → ( J ψ → μ + μ − ) + … is equal to 9.5 ± 2.5 nb/nucleus .
