The cross section for the reaction p¯N→μ+μ−X with muon pairs in the mass range 4<M<9 GeV/c2 and xF>0 was measured to be σ=0.104±0.005±0.008 nb/nucleon. The distributions dσdxF and M3dσdM were compared to the QCD-improved Drell-Yan model and to calculations including first-order QCD corrections, with use of deep-inelastic structure functions. Excellent agreement with the data was obtained if the calculations were multiplied by factors of 2.45 and 1.41, respectively.

Evidence is presented for a narrow state, called ξ, in the decay modes J/ψ→γξ, ξ→K+K−, and ξ→KS0KS0. In the K+K− mode, the ξ has a mass of 2.230±0.006±0.014 GeV/c2, a width of Γ=0.026−0.016+0.020± 0.017 GeV/c2, a product branching ratio of (4.2−1.4+1.7±0.8)×10 −5, and a statistical significance of ∼4.5 standard deviations. In the KS0KS0 mode, it has a mass of 2.232±0.007±0.007 GeV/c2, a width of Γ=0.018−0.015+0.023± 0.010 GeV/c2, a product branching ratio of (3.1−1.3+1.6±0.7)×10 −5, and a statistical significance of ∼3.6 standard deviations. We present measurements of the differential cross section for the production of massive muon pairs in 225-GeV/c π−-nucleus collisions. We have used the data between the ψ and ϒ resonances in the framework of the Drell-Yan quark-antiquark annihilation model to predict the behavior of the cross section in the high-mass (mμμ>11 GeV/c2) region. The data are consistent with this extrapolation provided that a QCD leading-logarithmic evolution is included in the structure functions.

We have investigated the photoproduction process γ+p→π++n over a wide range of energies and u values at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) accelerator. We also have investigated γ+p→π−+N*++ at one value of u and γ+p→K++Λ0, Σ0 at one u value and three energies. Our results for dσdu for the photoproduction of π+ mesons from hydrogen are roughly α2π of the corresponding cross sections for the elastic scattering of π− mesons from hydrogen. The u dependence of our cross sections is not dominated by nucleon exchange as it is in the case of π+p elastic scattering.

We report measurements of the photoproduction from hydrogen of single π+ mesons at gamma-ray energies of 3.4 and 5.0 BeV and at laboratory angles of 5.1°, 7.1°, 9.9°, and 15.1°. The s dependence at fixed t is derived for momentum transfers of -0.20, -0.37, and -0.70 BeV2. The pion data are compared with a Reggeized one-pion-exchange model.

A total of 24 360 events having two charged particles in the final state from π−+p interactions at an incident π− momentum of 2.7 GeVc have been analyzed. The final states π−π+n and π−π0p are found to be dominated by rho-meson production, and in addition, significant N*(1238) production is seen. The partial cross sections for the dominant resonant channels are σ=(pρ−)=(1.3±0.2) mb, σ(nρ0)=(2.3±0.2) mb, and σ[π−N*+(→pπ0)]=(0.5±0.2) mb. The production of the ρ− and ρ0 and the decay of the ρ− agree very well with the predictions of an absorption-modified one-pion-exchange model. The production angular distributions of the ρ0 and ρ− follow an exponential of the form Ae+Bt. The results from a least-squares fit give B(ρ−)=9.32±0.08 (GeVc)−2, B(ρ0)=10.26±0.06 (GeVc)−2. A similar analysis for the elastic-scattering events gave B(el)=7.77±0.05 (GeVc)−2. The ρ0 decay distributions are asymmetric and they have been analyzed using a simple model which includes S−P-wave interference. No clear evidence is seen for a T=0, J=0 resonance at a mass near that of the ρ. The N*(1238) resonance production is found to be in agreement with the ρ-exchange model of Stodolsky and Sakurai. Indication of other resonance production with small cross section is seen, such as A1 and A2 production in the multiple missing neutral events. The masses and widths of the ρ0 and ρ− as a function of the four-momentum transfer squared to the nucleon have been determined.

The polarization parameter in proton-proton scattering has been measured at incident proton kinetic energies of 1.7, 2.85, 3.5, 4.0, 5.05, and 6.15 BeV and for four-momentum transfer squared between 0.1 and 1.0 (BeV/c)2. The experiment was done with an unpolarized proton beam from the Bevatron striking a polarized proton target. Both final-state protons were detected in coincidence and the asymmetry in counting rate for target protons polarized parallel and antiparallel to the scattering normal was measured. The maximum polarization was observed to decrease from 0.4 at 1.7 BeV to 0.2 at 6.1 BeV. The maximum of the polarization at all energies studied occurs at a four-momentum transfer squared of 0.3 to 0.4 (BeV/c)2.

Interactions of 2.08−BeVc positive pions with protons have been studied using the 20-in. hydrogen bubble chamber and the alternating gradient synchrotron at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Using 3000 elastic and 8000 inelastic events, the partial cross sections for elastic scattering and for meson production have been measured. The ρ+, ρ0, ω0, and η0 resonances are produced strongly and emerge predominantly in the forward direction in the center-of-mass system, suggesting a peripheral mechanism for their production. The possibility of explaining these reactions by specific particle-exchange models is investigated. More than 75% of the ρ0, ω0, and η0 are produced with the N33* (1238) isobar. The N* (1688) is produced in about one-third of the π+π+N final states. Cross sections for production of ρ+p, π+pω, N33*ω, π+pη, N33*η, π+pρ0, N33*ρ0, N15*π+, and N33*π0, are given. A1, B, φ, and X mesons are not observed.

We have made the first observations of Ξ − production in p p interactions at √ s =540 GeV. In a sample of 6964 non single-diffractive events we observe 17 Ξ − decays with an estimated background of less than one event. This corresponds to 0.04 ± 0.01 Ξ − per event in the transverse momentum range p t >1.0 GeV/ c and in the pseudorapidity range |η| < 3.5. Assuming an exponential p t distribution, we find 〈 p t 〉=1.1 −0.2 +0.3 GeV/ c .

The production of K 0 s, Λs and Λ s has been studied in a 280 GeV muon-proton scattering experiment with almost complete coverage of all kinematic regions. A study is made of the dependence of the multiplicities on the hadronic centre of mass energy, W , and of the Feynman x distributions. It is found that K 0 and Λ production is mostly central and increases strongly with W , whereas Λ production comes mainly from the remnant target system and is only weakly W dependent.

A determination of branching ratios for D meson decays into all charged particle final states is reported. The values obtained: (D ± → K ∓ π ± π ± /all D ± ) = (14 ± 6)% and ( D 0 /D 0 → K ± π ∓ π + π − /all D 0 /D 0 ) = (10 ± 4)%, are higher than those currently accepted. This result, if confirmed, implies a corresponding reduction in the accepted values for some total cross section measurements. The two-jet cross section measured in the UA1 apparatus at the CERN p p Collider has been analysed in terms of the centre-of-mass scattering angle θ and the scaled longitudinal parton momenta x 1 and x 2 . The differential cross section in x 1 and x 2 is consistent with factorization and provides a measurement of the proton structure function F(x) = G(x) + 4 9 [Q(x) + Q (x)] at values of the four-momentum transfer squared, -t̂ ≈ 2000 GeV 2 . Muons of high transverse momentum p μ T have been observed in the large drift chambers surrounding the UA1 detector at the CERN 540 GeV pp̄ collider. For an integrated luminosity of 108 nb −1 , 14 isolated muons have been found with p T > 15 GeV/ c . They are correlated with a large imbalance in total transverse energy, and show a kinematic behaviour consistent with the muonic decay of the Intermediate Vector Boson W ± of weak interactions. The partial cross section is in agreement with previous measurements for electronic decays and with muon-electron universality. The W mass is determined to be m W = 81 +6 −7 GeV/ c 2 .

The inclusive production of protons with laboratory momentum less than 1.2 GeV/ c is studied in the reacion K + p → pX at 32 GeV/ c . A comparison with the 16 GeV/ c data shows ahat the total cross section remains practically constant while the structure function shows a clear energy dependence. The data are compatible with a tripls-Regge expansion and with factorization. About 40% of the events include a K 0 in the final state. The analysis of the K 0 pX sample indicates a sizeable contribution of beam fragmentation and abundant K 890 ∗ and Δ ++ production.

A strong negative transverse polarization P z is found for forward produced lambdas observed in 10 and 16 GeV/ c K − p interactions. This indicates that exchanges of natural spin-parity are dominant in the production process. Using the polarization results, the d σ d u′ distributions for natural and unnatural spin-parity exchanges are derived. For unnatural exchanges, a dip is observed at u ′≅0.3 GeV 2 , which can be explained as a nonsense-wrong-signature zero of the N β trajectory. The value of P z for forward producted lambdas is constant with energy. This is in agreement with the triple-Regge model prediction, as is the fact that P z is constant as a function of M 2 s . The two non-transverse polarization components, P x and P y , have been measured and are found to be consistent with zero for all x values, unlike P z .

The production of neutral kaons in the reaction K + p → K n + X is studied at the incident momentum of 32 GeV/ c . Inclusive cross sections and single-particle distributions are presented and compared with the data at lower energies. The total inclusive cross section amounts to 7.9 ± 0.3 mb at 32 GeV/ c and is significantly higher than at lower energies due to the rapid rise of multikaon production. The fraction of K n 's coming from the decay of the K ∗ resonances stays roughly constant with energy between 8.2 and 32 GeV/ c . In the central and beam fragmentation regions the single-particle distributions reveal no energy dependence between the 16 and 32 GeV/ c data in contrast with the behaviour at lower energies, while in the proton fragmentation region the data are compatible with the trend observed at lower energies and with theoretical expectations.

We present results for the differential cross sections of neutrinos and antineutrinos on nucleons in the energy range E = 2−200 GeV, from the BEBC and Gargamelle experiments. The structure functions F 2 , 2 χF 1 and χF 3 have been evaluated as a function of χ and q 2 . Deviations are observed from Bjorken scaling, which are very similar to those found in electron and muon inelastic scattering. For the Callan-Gross ratio, we find 2χF 1 F 2 = 0.80 ± 0.12 and the corresponding value for 〈R〉 = 〈 σ S σ T 〉 = 0.15 ± 0.10 . Our results are consistent with the Gross-Llewellyn-Smith sum rule; we measure ⩾2.5 ± 0.5 valence quarks per nucleon. Quark and antiquark distributions are given. The Nachtmann moments of F 2 and χF 3 are quantitatively consistent with the predictions from QCD. The value of the strong interaction parameter is λ = 0.74 ± 0.05 GeV without corrections, and 0.66 ± 0.05 GeV including α S 2 corrections. The moments of the gluon distribution are found to be positive and indicate an χ distribution of gluons which is comparable with that of the valence quarks.

The inclusive reactions pn → p s + x and π + n → p s + x at incident momentum of 195 GeV/ c have been studied in an exposure of the Fermilab 30 inch deuterium filled bubble chamber to a mixed ( π + , p) beam. Analysing the t and M 2 dependence of our data within the framework of triple-Regge models we conclude that pion exchange yields a dominating contribution. Comparing our data with the pp results we conclude that isoscalar Regge exchange, ω, is much larger than isovector, ϱ, Regge exchange. We observe significant leading π − emission from the recoiling mass x, comparable to that observed in on-mass-shell π − p → π − experiments. This verifies our conclusions about pion-exchange dominance in the above reactions.

A study of the inclusive and semi-inclusive Λ and Λ production in K + p interactions at 32 GeV/ c is presented. The inclusive cross sections for Λ and Λ amount to 0.78 ± 0.05 and 0.42 ± 0.04 mb thus showing a remarkable growth between 16 and 32 GeV/ c with a factor of 1.7 for Λ and 2.8 for Λ . Target and beam fragmentation processes are found to be dominant for Λ and Λ production respectively with the following lower limits for the corresponding cross sections: σ(p → K + ʌ) > 0.5 mb and σ(K + → p ʌ ) > 0.3 mb . Although the early scaling conditions are fulfilled for the Λ production in the target fragmentation region, and Λ production in the beam fragmentation region, scaling is not observed between 16 and 32 GeV/ c in the x and p T 2 Feynman variables. The Λ production is found to be very similar in the K + p inclusive reaction at 32 GeV/ c and in the semi-inclusive reaction K − p → Λ K K X at the same energy. The Λ Λ pair production cross section increases significantly in K + p interactions from 16 to 32 GeV/ c where it reaches the value σ Λ Λ = 47 ± 11 μ b . The cross sections for Λ or Λ produced in association with an identified proton are also given and discussed.

Inclusive production of Λ and Λ in K + p interactions is studied at incident momenta of 8.2 and 16.0 GeV/ c . Cross sections and single-particle distributions are presented, the correlation between longitudinal and transverse momentum is investigated, and the dependence of average charge multiplicity on missing mass measured. For Λ production, early scaling is observed in the target fragmentation region when the data are presented in terms of ( M 2 - M th 2 )/ s and t , where M th is the threshold value of the missing mass M . Furthermore, a triple-Regge analysis in these variable yields an effective exchange trajectory which passes through the K, Q and L mesons. There is evidence for beam fragmentation in Λ and Λ production, but the contributions seem not to be dominant in the fragmentation region. Nevertheless, the parameter values in a triple-Regge description are estimated, and together with those for target fragmentation in Λ production, provide a complete description of the fragmentation contributions to the two reactions. Integration of the resultant distribution functions over the complete Chew-Low plot yields fragmentation cross sections increasing approximately as log s ; in addition the observed features of the x , p L and p T 2 projections and of the p L - p T correlation are well-described in the fragmentation regions. Central production contributions are isolated by subtracting the calculated fragmentation distributions

The fraction of the sample attributable to direct single photon production is 〈 γ /all〉 = 0.074 ± 0.012 for 6 GeV/ c < p T 10 GeV/ c , and 〈 γ /all〉 = 0.26 ± 0.04 for p T > 10 GeV/ c , with an additional systematic uncertainty of ±0.05 for both values.

In 205 GeV / c π − p inelastic interactions, negative particles with transverse momentum greater than 1.0 GeV / c moving forward in the center of mass outnumber similar positive particles by a factor of 3.7 to 1, greatly in excess of the corresponding ratio for small transverse momentum. The forward asymmetry is most prominent in 2-, 4-, and 6-prong interactions, but both forward and backward asymmetries are also substantial for higher multiplicity interactions.

In an experiment performed at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR), 11 e + e − pairs of high invariant mass value (> 2.5 GeV/c 2 ) have been observed. Of these events, 9 can be interpreted as arising from the reaction p + p → J (3.1) + anything. the cross-section for this reaction is estimated and compared with the result obtained at lower centre-of-mass energies.

Results are given on the inclusive production of charged pions, kaons, and nucleons, in proton-proton collisions at c.m. energies from √ s = 23 to 63 GeV at large angles and for the transverse momentum range 0.1 < p T < 4.8 GeV/ c . The dependence of the production spectra on the collision energy √ s , the transverse momentum p T , and the longitudinal rapidity is discussed.
