This paper describes a measurement of the W boson transverse momentum distribution using ATLAS pp collision data from the 2010 run of the LHC at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 31 pb^-1. Events from both W -> e nu and W -> mu nu are used, and the transverse momentum of the W candidates is measured through the energy deposition in the calorimeter from the recoil of the W. The resulting distributions are unfolded to obtain the normalized differential cross sections as a function of the W boson transverse momentum. We present results for pTW < 300 GeV in the electron and muon channels as well as for their combination, and compare the combined results to the predictions of perturbative QCD and a selection of event generators.

With a PETRA energy scan in ≤30-MeV steps, the continuum production of open top quark up to 38.54 GeV is excluded. Over regions of energy scan from 29.90 to 38.63 GeV limits are set on the product of hadronic branching ratio and electronic width BhΓee for toponium to be less than 2.0 keV at the 95% confidence level. By a search for flavor-changing neutral currents in b decay, models without a top quark are excluded.

The results of a high-statistics study of inclusive muon spectra at PETRA are reported. Improved mass limits have been obtained for heavy quarks, heavy leptons, and charged Higgs particles. It is shown that the fragmentation properties of b quarks and c quarks are different, with the mean fragmentation variables 〈zb〉=0.75±0.03±0.06, 〈zc〉=0.46±0.02±0.05 and the average semileptonic branching ratio for the B and C hadrons R(B)=(10.5±1.5±1.3)%, R(C)=(11.5±1.0±1.7)%.

We use the reaction e+e−→μ+μ−, in the Mark J detector at the DESY high-energy e+e− collider PETRA, to test the standard electroweak theory and find good agreement. We also set limits on the parameters of several extended gauge theories.

With use of the MARK-J detector at s=34.7 GeV 21 000 e+e−→hadron events have been collected. By measurement of the asymmetry in angular energy correlations the strong coupling constant αs=0.13±0.01 (statistical)±0.02 (systematic) is determined, in complete second order, and independent of the fragmentation models and QCD cutoff values used.

The measurement of the nonelectromagnetic forward-backward charge asymmetry in the reaction e+e−→μ+μ− at s∼34.6 GeV and in the angular region 0<|cosθ|<0.8 is reported. With a systematic error less than 1%, we observe an asymmetry of (-8.1±2.1)%. This is in agreement with the standard electroweak theory prediction of (-7.6±0.6)%. The weak-current coupling constants are also reported.

A study of τ-lepton production in the CMS energy region from 14 to 46.8 GeV at PETRA is reported. The cross section, the decay branching ratio into μν ν , and the electroweak parameters are determined with a total integrated luminosity of 115 pb −1 .
Total cross section calculated from measured channel cross section assuming BR(tau-mu) = 17.6 pct. SIG(Q=MU) is the QED point cross section.

We present a study of energy-energy correlations based on 83 000 hadronic Z 0 decays. From this data we determine the strong coupling constant α s to second order QCD: α s (91.2 GeV)=0.121±0.004(exp.)±0.002(hadr.) −0.006 +0.009 (scale)±0.006(theor.) from the energy-energy correlation and α s (91.2 GeV)=0.115±0.004(exp.) −0.004 +0.007 (hadr.) −0.000 +0.002 (scale) −0.005 +0.003 (theor.) from its asymmetry using a renormalization scale μ 1 =0.1 s . The first error (exp.) is the systematic experimental uncertainly, the statistical error is negligible. The other errors are due to hadronization (hadr.), renormalization scale (scale) uncertainties, and differences between the calculated second order corrections (theor.).
Statistical errors are equal to or less than 0.6 pct in each bin. There is also a 4 pct systematic uncertainty.

The first error given is the experimental error which is mainly the overall systematic uncertainty: the first (DSYS) error is due to hadronization, the second to the renormalization scale, and the third differences between the calculated and second order corrections.

We present a study of the inclusive production of neutral pions and charged particles from 112 000 hadronic Z 0 decays. The measured inclusive momentum distributions can be reproduced by parton shower Monte Carlo programs and also by an analytical QCD calculation. Comparing our results to e + e − data between √ s = 9 and 91 GeV, we findfind that the evolution of the spectra with center of mass energy is consistent with the QCD predictions.
