We present the results of a study of muon pairs with invariant masses greater than 4.05 GeV/c2 produced in high-energy pion-nucleon interactions. The production cross section together with the inferred pion and nucleon structure functions are reported and compared with other experiments and with QCD predictions. The transverse-momentum distributions are also presented. Finally, the full angular distribution in cosθ and φ is given as a function of mass, Feynman x, and transverse momentum. Longitudinal photon polarization is seen in the lower portion of the mass range at high xπ. This result is compared with a higher-twist model.

A factorial moment analysis has been performed on the differential multiplicity distributions of hadronic final states of the Z 0 recorded with the OPAL detector at LEP. The moments of the one-dimensional rapidity and the two-dimensional rapidity versus azimuthal angle distributions are found to exhibit “intermittent” behaviour attributable to the jet structure of the events. The moments are reproduced by both parton shower and matrix element QCD based hadronisation models. No evidence for fluctuations beyond those attributable to jet structure is observed.

We report on an improved measurement of the value of the strong coupling constant σ s at the Z 0 peak, using the asymmetry of the energy-energy correlation function. The analysis, based on second-order perturbation theory and a data sample of about 145000 multihadronic Z 0 decays, yields α s ( M z 0 = 0.118±0.001(stat.)±0.003(exp.syst.) −0.004 +0.0009 (theor. syst.), where the theoretical systematic error accounts for uncertainties due to hadronization, the choice of the renormalization scale and unknown higher-order terms. We adjust the parameters of a second-order matrix element Monte Carlo followed by string hadronization to best describe the energy correlation and other hadronic Z 0 decay data. The α s result obtained from this second-order Monte Carlo is found to be unreliable if values of the renormalization scale smaller than about 0.15 E cm are used in the generator.

We describe a search for psi(3770) decay to two-body non-DDbar final states in e+e- data produced by the CESR collider and analyzed with the CLEO-c detector. Vector-pseudoscalar production of Rho0Pi0, Rho+Pi-, OmegaPi0, PhiPi0, RhoEta, OmegaEta, PhiEta, RhoEtaPrime, OmegaEtaPrime, PhiEtaPrime, Kstar0 K0bar, and Kstar+K- is studied along with that of BOnePi (BOne0Pi0 and BOne+Pi-) and Pi+Pi-Pi0. A statistically significant signal is found for PhiEta, at an excess cross section of (2.4 +- 0.6) pb [Gamma_{PhiEta} (psi(3770)) =(74 +- 16)Mev], and a suggestive suppression of Pi+Pi-Pi0 and RhoPi. We conclude with form factor determinations for OmegaPi0, RhoEta, and RhoEtaPrime.

We report on a measurement of the inclusive jet cross section in $p \bar{p}$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt s=$1.96 TeV using data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.70 fb$^{-1}$. The results of a search for pair production of the lighter scalar partners of top quarks in 2.05 fb-1 of pp collisions at sqrt(s) =7 TeV using the ATLAS experiment at the LHC are reported. Scalar top quarks are searched for in events with two same flavour opposite-sign leptons (electrons or muons) with invariant mass consistent with the Z boson mass, large missing transverse momentum and jets in the final state. At least one of the jets is identified as originating from a b-quark. No excess over Standard Model expectations is found. The results are interpreted in the framework of R-parity conserving, gauge mediated Supersymmetry breaking `natural' scenarios, where the neutralino is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle. Scalar top quark masses up to 310 GeV are excluded for the lightest neutralino mass between 115 GeV and 230 GeV at 95% confidence level, reaching an exclusion of the scalar top quark mass of 330 GeV for the lightest neutralino mass of 190 GeV. Scalar top quark masses below 240 GeV are excluded for all values of the lightest neutralino mass above the Z boson mass.

This paper describes a measurement of the W boson transverse momentum distribution using ATLAS pp collision data from the 2010 run of the LHC at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 31 pb^-1. Events from both W -> e nu and W -> mu nu are used, and the transverse momentum of the W candidates is measured through the energy deposition in the calorimeter from the recoil of the W. The resulting distributions are unfolded to obtain the normalized differential cross sections as a function of the W boson transverse momentum. We present results for pTW < 300 GeV in the electron and muon channels as well as for their combination, and compare the combined results to the predictions of perturbative QCD and a selection of event generators.

A search for pair-produced scalar particles decaying to a four-jet final state is presented. The analysis is performed using an integrated luminosity of 34 pb^-1 recorded by the ATLAS detector in 2010. No deviation from the Standard Model is observed. For a scalar mass of 100 GeV (190 GeV) the limit on the scalar gluon pair production cross section at 95% confidence level is 1 nb (0.28 nb). When these results are interpreted as mass limits, scalar-gluons (hyperpions) with masses of 100 to 185 GeV (100 to 155 GeV) are excluded at 95% confidence level with the exception of a mass window of width about 5 GeV (15 GeV) around 140 GeV.

A 7.5 GeV linearly polarized photon beam was used to study ϱ 0 production on d, n and p in the SLAC 82 inch bubble chamber. The production of ϱ 0 is found to proceed mainly via t -channel natural parity exchange and to conserve s -channel c.m.s. helicity for small t . The I = 1 contribution to the γ N → ϱ 0 t -channel amplitude is found to be small at 7.5 GeV.

We have measured the total and differential cross-sections for coherently photoproduced ϱ, ω and ϱ′ on deuterium at 7.5 GeV. Using VDM relations, we have obtained γ ω 2 / γ ϱ 2 = 7.1 ± 1.5, σ T ( ϱ d) = (54 ± 2) mb and σ T ( ω d) = (56 ± 5) mb. Assuming the amplitude for ϱ′ production via an intermediate ϱ 0 to be small and that the amplitudes for ϱp and ϱ′p elastic scattering are comparable, we found γ ϱ ′ 2 / γ ϱ 2 = 6.0 ± 1.2 and σ T ( ϱ ′d) = (47 ± 6) mb.

A study of pp interactions at an incident momentum of 16.2 GeV/ c leading to two-prong non-strange final states was carried out in an exposure of the 2m CERN hydrogen bubble chamber. The c.m. angle and momentum distributions for the outgoing particles in the final states pn π + and pp π 0 are presented and discussed. These final states were analysed in terms of quasi two-body final states - N(Nπ), with the pion-nucleon system in an I = 1 2 or I = 3 2 state. A determination of these two isospin amplitudes and their interference term is then carried out. The reaction pp → pn π + is found to be well described by a Reggeized exchange model, as well as by a double Regge-exchange model.

The reaction γ d→d ππ , γ p→p ππ and γ n→n ππ were studied in the SLAC 82″ deuterium filled bubble chamber, exposed to a linearly polarized photon beam of 7.5 GeV. All three reactions are dominated by ϱ 0 production. The differential cross section has a slope of ∼6.5 GeV −2 for nucleon reactions and a slope of ∼27 GeV −2 for coherent deuteron reactions. The behaviour of the density matrix elements shows that ϱ production conserves s -channel c.m.s. helicity and is dominated by natural parity exchange.

An experiment using the PLUTO detector has observed the formation of a narrow, high mass, resonance in e + e − annihilations at the DORIS storage ring. The mass is determined to be 9.46±0.01 GeV which is consistent with that of the Upsilon. The gaussian width σ is observed as 8±1 MeV and is equal to the DORIS energy resolution. This suggests that the resonance is a bound state of a new heavy quark-antiquark pair. An electronic width Γ ee =1.3±0.4 keV was obtained. In standard theoretical models, this favors a quark charge assignment of 1 3 .

Elastic scattering and single-pion production in pp collisions at 6.92 BeVc were studied in the BNL 80-in. hydrogen bubble chamber. Partial cross sections for the different final states are given. The reaction pp→nN1238*(pπ+) with σ=1.9±0.3 mb is analyzed and is in agreement with the modified one-pion-exchange model. Measurements of the charged multiplicities for hadron production in e + e − annihilation in the center of mass energy range 9–32 GeV have been made. The average charged multiplicity has an energy dependence much stronger than ln s and similar to that reported for pp collisions. Quantitative differences are observed in the magnitude of both the average multiplicity 〈 n ch 〉 and the dispersion D ch for e + e − and pp interactions at the same center of mass energy. 〈 n ch 〉 and the ratio 〈 n ch / D ch in e + e − annihilations are significantly larger than in pp collisions and are found to be in overall agreement with QCD predictions. KNO scaling is seen to be satisfied.

A sample of approximately 250 Λp interactions has been obtained in the Λ-hyperon momentum range of about 300 to 500 MeV/ c . An enhanced Λ-hyperon production rate was obtained by exposing an internally-mounted platinum target to the incident 1.5 GeV/ c meson beam. Cross sections and angular distributions are obtained for the reactions: Λ p → Λ p, Λ p → Σ o p and Λ p → Λ p π o . In the elastic channel, no strong evidence is seen near the Σ o p threshold for the presence of a 3 S 1 resonance, which has been reported, although there is some evidence for a small enhancement in this mass region. There is evidence for the presence of P-waves and probably also D-waves above about 800 MeV/ c , but not below this momentum.

Charged hadron production ine+e− annihilation is studied in the 7 to 10 GeV CM energy region and at the Υ (9.46) and Υ′ (10.01) resonances with the LENA detector at DORIS. The statistical moments of the charged multiplicities are studied. The data show KNO scaling behaviour and suggest the presence of long range correlations. An average charged multiplicityrise of Δn(Υ)=0.55±0.19 and Δn(Υ′)=1.26±0.29 over the continuum is observed for the Υ and Υ′ direct decays. The jet structure of the Υ and Υ′ direct decays is investigated using the charged particles. The energy dependence of the average of the charged multiplicity and its dispersion in π + /K + /p interaction on protons at 147 GeV/ c is found to be the same as in e + e − annihilations if an “effective energy” variable is used instead of the total energy. The effective energy S eff is defined as the invariant mass of all secondaries left after the two leading particles have been removed. Fitting the expression aS eff b to the average charge multiplicity 〈 n ch 〉, we find the power b to be in good agreement with the value of 0.25 predicted by Fermi's statistical model and by Landau's hydrodynamical model.

The energy dependence of the averages of these jet quantities is used to estimate the contributions due to perturbative QCD and fragmentation effects. We have studied the inclusive production of K*±(890) and Y*±(1385) in pp, π+p, and K+p interactions at 147 GeV/c. The experiment used the Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber with the hybrid spectrometer system. Results are based on a sample of 1916 observed KS and 932 observed A. Inclusive cross sections are given for K*± and Y*± production from the three beams, and comparisons are made with experiments at other energies. Feynman-x and transverse-momentum-squared distributions are also calculated. The results suggest that the K*− is entirely produced in the central region, while the K*+ includes a component from beam fragmentation. Comparisons are made with the additive quark model.

The rationR=σ(e+e−→hadrons)/σ(e+e−→ µ+ µ−) was measured with the LENA detector at DORIS in a scan between 7.40 and 7.48 GeV and between 8.67 and 9.43 GeV center of mass energies. Corrected for QED radiative effects,R is found to be constant with an average value ofR=3.37 ±0.06stat±0.23syst. No narrow resonances withΓee(Γhad/Γtot)⊗0.30 keV (95% C.L.) and no steps have been observed. Based on this value ofR, revised values for υ(1S) resonance parameters are presented.

NUMERICAL VALUES GIVEN IN APPENDIX IN PREPRINT. STATISTICAL ERRORS ONLY.
This report is based on about 10 500 pp collision events produced in the 81-cm Saclay hydrogen bubble chamber at CERN. Cross-section values for the different identified final states and resonances are given. The isobars N*1238, N*1420, N*1518, N*1688, N*1920, and N*2360 were identified and their production cross-section values were found via a best-fit analysis of different invariant-mass histograms. About 70% of the isobars are connected with the quasi-two-body reactions pp→N*N and pp→N*N*. The reaction pp→nN*1238(pπ+) with a cross section of 3.25±0.16 mb was analyzed in terms of a peripheral absorption model, which was found to be in good agreement with the data. Various decay modes of the N*1518 and N*1688 isobars were observed and their branching ratios determined. The branching ratio of nπ+ to pπ+π− was found to be 0.77±0.45 for N*1518 and 0.67±0.40 for N*1688. The branching ratio of N*1238(pπ+)π− to pπ+π− of N*1688 was estimated to be 0.74±0.14. Pion production turned out to be mainly due to decay of isobars. Production of meson resonances turned out to be less important; the reaction pp→ppω0→ppπ+π−π0 was identified with a cross-section value of 0.11±0.02 mb. Finally, the production of neutral strange particles with a cross section of 0.45±0.04 mb is descussed. Strong formation of Y*1385 is observed.

We report on the exclusive production of π, K and proton pairs from photon-photon interactions at momentum transfers | t |⩾1 GeV 2 . Using the PLUTO detector at the e + e − storage ring PETRA, we have observed 15 events in an integrated luminosity of 41.7 pb −1 . The data lie far below the expectations for point-like hadrons, and are in reasonable agreement with the QCD-based predictions of Brodsky and Lepage.
THIS METHOD OF ANALYSIS OF THE OBSERVED RATIO OF HADRON TO MUON PAIRS, IS TIED TO THE SPECIFIC DETECTOR ACCEPTANCE, BUT HAS THE ADVANTAGE OF BEING VIRTUALLY INDEPENDENT OF THE HADRON MASSES.
SEE COMMENT IN PREVIOUS TABLE.
THIS METHOD OF ANALYSIS OF THE CROSS SECTION AT 90 DEG IN THE CM AS A FUNCTION OF PCM IS MORE EASILY COMPARED WITH THEORETICAL PREDICTIONS BUT MORE DEPENDENT ON THE SPECIFIC HADRON MASSES.
