Angular distributions for positive-pion photoproduction from liquid hydrogen have been measured at photon energies near 225, 250, 275, 300, and 350 MeV. These have been normalized to an absolute cross section near the peak of the first resonance, measured by means of a polyethylene-carbon subtraction using solid targets. The results are compared with results of previous experiments as well as several dispersion-theoretic predictions of the cross sections. The data can be fitted within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties by a theoretical calculation containing only the pion pole term and the transition to the P3,3 state due to the first resonance.

New formulae for constructing the pion photoproduction amplitude J from experimental data are presented. The phase of J is expressed in terms of its zeroes in the energy plane, the particle poles and a dispersion integral over the modulus of J , the latter being given, except for a finite unphysical interval, in terms of differential cross sections and recoil nucleon polarizations. For γ p→ π + n at t ≈−0.870 μ 2 , where the unphysical-region contribution vanishes, the zeroes are found approximately, so that the phase of J can be uniquely determined from the experimental data.

The results of a search for pair production of the lighter scalar partners of top quarks in 2.05 fb-1 of pp collisions at sqrt(s) =7 TeV using the ATLAS experiment at the LHC are reported. Scalar top quarks are searched for in events with two same flavour opposite-sign leptons (electrons or muons) with invariant mass consistent with the Z boson mass, large missing transverse momentum and jets in the final state. At least one of the jets is identified as originating from a b-quark. No excess over Standard Model expectations is found. The results are interpreted in the framework of R-parity conserving, gauge mediated Supersymmetry breaking `natural' scenarios, where the neutralino is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle. Scalar top quark masses up to 310 GeV are excluded for the lightest neutralino mass between 115 GeV and 230 GeV at 95% confidence level, reaching an exclusion of the scalar top quark mass of 330 GeV for the lightest neutralino mass of 190 GeV. Scalar top quark masses below 240 GeV are excluded for all values of the lightest neutralino mass above the Z boson mass.
The missing ET distribution from the combined EE and MUMU data for SR1. Tabulated are the observed Data rates and the Standard Model predictions as well as the distributions expected for two signal scenarios, both with an STOP mass of 250 GeV, and NEUTRALINO1 masses of 100 GeV and 220 GeV respectively.
The number of b-tagged jets for SR1 for the combined EE and MUMU channels. Tabulated are the observed Data rates and the Standard Model predictions as well as the distributions expected for two signal scenarios, both with an STOP mass of 250 GeV, and NEUTRALINO1 masses of 100 GeV and 220 GeV respectively.
The distrubution of leading jet pT for SR1 for the combined EE and MUMU channels. Tabulated are the observed Data rates and the Standard Model predictions as well as the distributions expected for two signal scenarios, both with an STOP mass of 250 GeV, and NEUTRALINO1 masses of 100 GeV and 220 GeV respectively. The last pT bin includes the number of overflow events for both data abd SM expectation.
The cross section for photoproduction of single π+ from hydrogen has been measured at laboratory angles of 110°, 127.5° and 152°, between 0.9- and 3.2-GeV incident photon energy. Measurements have been made with approximately 15% statistical accuracy at about 40 photon energies at each angle. The results agree well with the previous Caltech data of Thiessen. The cross section shows a rapid drop with increasing energy with superimposed bumps or shoulders corresponding to the N(1688), Δ(1920), and Δ(2420). A shallow minimum is observed at the N(2190) resonance.

We have studied the energy-energy correlation in e+e− annihilation into hadrons at √s =29 GeV using the Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. We find to O(αs2) that αs=0.158±0.003±0.008 if hadronization is described by string fragmentation. Independent fragmentation schemes give αs=0.10–0.14, and give poor agreement with the data. A leading-log shower fragmentation model is found to describe the data well.

Production rates of multijet hadronic final states are studied ine+e− annihilation at 29 GeV center of mass energy. QCD shower model calculations with exact first order matrix element weighting at the first gluon vertex are capable of reproducing the observed multijet event rates over a large range of jet pair masses. The method used to reconstruct jets is well suited for directly comparing experimental jet rates with parton rates calculated in perturbative QCD. Evidence for the energy dependene of αs is obtained by comparing the observed production rates of 3-jet events with results of similar studies performed at higher center of mass energies.

A precise measurement of the ratio R of the total cross section e+e−→hadrons to the pointlike cross section e+e−→μ+μ− at a center-of-mass energy of 29.0 GeV is presented. The data were taken with the upgraded Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. The result is R=3.92±0.05±0.09. The luminosity has been determined with three independent luminosity monitors measuring Bhabha scattering at different angular intervals. Recent calculations of higher-order QED radiative corrections are used to estimate the systematic error due to missing higher-order radiative corrections in the Monte Carlo event generators.

In a photoproduction experiment using a mean photon energy of 100 GeV we have observed 29±8 Λ c ( Λ c ) charmed-baryon and antibaryon decays in the pK − π + ( p K + π − ) final state. Quasi two-body final states do not contribite significantly to this channel. The mass of the Λ c was measured to be 2281.7±2.7±2.6 MeV/ c 2 and its lifetime 0.18±0.03±0.03 ps. The ratio of Λ c D production, measured in this experiment, is significantly greater than that predicted by photon-gluon fusion and using a Lund model to describe the hadronization. This excess cannot be completely accounted for in this model, even using a Λ c branching fraction in pK π as high as 5%.
Result extrapolated to all lambda/c energies has large model dependent uncertainties.
