The differential cross section for elastic scattering of positive pions on protons has been measured at a nominal incident-meson kinetic energy of 250 MeV. The angular range covered in the center of mass by the 13 data was 14.9° to 160°. The fractional rms errors were typically 1.5%. A liquid-hydrogen target was bombarded by a beam of 2.5×106 mesons/sec. The scattered pions were detected by a counter telescope. Recoil protons were eliminated by means of a Čerenkov counter. A phase-shift analysis was performed combining the above-mentioned data with the recoil-proton polarization measurements taken recently with the help of a polarized proton target. Only one acceptable SPD Fermi-type phase-shift set was found. When F waves were included, a total of three possible phase-shift solutions emerged from the analysis. However, arguments based on the data could still be made to eliminate all but one phase-shift set. On the other hand, the remaining phase-shift set, similar in type to the SPD solution, suffers from the disadvantage of large rms errors assigned to its small phase shifts.

A 14-in. liquid-hydrogen-filled bubble chamber in a 17.5-kG magnetic field was exposed to a beam of negative pions produced by the Cosmotron at Brookhaven National Laboratory. About 26 000 pictures were taken and examined for the following final states: (1) elastic scattering (π−p); (2) π+ production (π−π+n); (3) π0 production (π−π0p); (4) neutrals. Values for the cross sections for these processes are σ(elastic)=17.56±0.43 mb, σ(π+)=7.14±0.23 mb, σ(π0)=4.65±0.17 mb. The elastic-scattering angular dependence in the c.m. system is fitted by a power-series expansion in cosθ and gives the following coefficients: a0=0.27±0.02, a1=1.48±0.11, a2=3.86±0.22, a3=−0.29±0.53, a4=−0.65±0.28, a5=1.69±0.52 (units: mb/sr). Cross sections for multiple-pion production were also measured: σ(π−π+π0n)=0.33±0.04 mb, σ(π−π+π−p)=0.08±0.02 mb. The total neutral cross section was σ(neutrals)=11.78±0.43 mb; the total charged events cross section was σ(charged)=29.76±0.69 mb; and the total cross section was σ(total)=41.54±0.82 mb. For single-pion production events, two-body mass distributions and angular distributions were compared with the predictions of the Olsson-Yodh isobar model.

Phys.Rev. 170 (1968) 1207-1222, 1968.
Inspire Record 944939 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.26507

We studied 21 187 two-prong, two-prong-with-kink, and zero-prong-V events at incident kaon momentum of 1.33 GeVc using the 72-in. hydrogen bubble chamber at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory and two scanning and measuring projectors in Urbana. We determined the total and partial cross sections for all contributing reactions. For the two-body final states, some production and polarization angular distributions were measured. The angular distributions are discussed in terms of exchanges in the kinematical channels s, t, and u assuming the simplest Feynman graphs. Elastic scattering is analyzed as a diffraction process.

Pion production in $\pi^-$ - $p$ interactions at energies 790, 830, and 870 {MeV}

Single-pion production has been studied in the reactions π−p→π−π+n and π−p→π−π0p at 790, 830, and 870 MeV. A total of 4193 events in these two channels, divided approximately equally between the three energies, have been identified. The most interesting feature of the data is the tendency for events to concentrate at high values of mππ and low values of four-momentum transfer. These effects are discussed in terms of conventional isobar models and a model involving two-pion exchange. Partial cross sections for the reactions studied are reported for each energy.

Inspire Record 50913 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.26590

A total of 1589 two-prong events were observed in an exposure of the Brookhaven National Laboratory 14-in. bubble chamber at the Cosmotron. The fit to the elastic angular distribution requires terms through cos4θc.m.. The ratio of the inelastic cross sections σ(π−p→π−π+n)σ(π−p→π−π0p) is 3.75±0.46. The π−p→π−π+n reaction is dominated by formation of the π−n isobar and an enhancement in the di-pion mass spectrum previously reported by Kirz. The π−p→π−π0p reaction shows no structure in the effective-mass spectra.

The cross section of the process e+ e- ---> eta gamma has been measured in the 600-1380 MeV c.m. energy range with the CMD-2 detector. The following branching ratios have been determined: B(rho ---> eta gamma) = (3.28 +- 0.37 +- 0.23) 10^{-4}, B(omega ---> eta gamma) = (5.10 +- 0.72 +- 0.34) 10^{-4}, B(phi --> eta gamma) = (1.287 +- 0.013 +- 0.063) 10^{-2}. Evidence for the rho'(1450) ---> eta gamma decay has been obtained for the first time.

Total cross sections for negative pions on protons were measured at laboratory energies of 230, 290, 370, 427, and 460 Mev. The measurements were made in the same pion beams as and at energies identical with those of our π−−p differential scattering experiments. Comparisons of the total and differential scattering can be made with the dispersion theory at a given energy without introducing the systematic errors that would normally enter due to uncertainties in the parameters of more than one pion beam. The measured total cross sections are found to agree within statistics with other measured values, and with the sums of elastic, inelastic, and charge-exchange cross sections measured at this laboratory. The results are:

The process e+e- to pi+ pi- pi+ pi- pi0 has been studied in the center of mass energy range 1280 -- 1380 MeV using 3.0 1/pb of data collected with the CMD-2 detector in Novosibirsk. Analysis shows that the cross section of the five pion production is dominated by the contributions of the eta pi+pi- and omega pi+pi- intermediate states.

Charge-Exchange Scattering of Negative Pions by Hydrogen at 230, 260, 290, 317, and 371 Mev

Caris, John C. ; Kenney, Robert W. ; Perez-Mendez, Victor ; et al.
Phys.Rev. 121 (1961) 893-904, 1961.
Inspire Record 944987 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.805

The differential cross section for charge-exchange scattering of negative pions by hydrogen has been observed at 230, 260, 290, 317, and 371 Mev. The reaction was observed by detecting one gamma ray from the π0 decay with a scintillation-counter telescope. A least-squares analysis was performed to fit the observations to the function dσdω=Σl=15alPl−1(cosθ) in the c.m. frame. The best fit to our experimental measurements requires only s- and p-wave scattering. The results (in mb) are: The least-squares analysis indicates that d-wave scattering is not established in this energy range.
