We have measured the differential cross section for π−p elastic scattering at 180° in steps of 0.10 GeV/c or less in the region P0=1.6 to 5.3 GeV/c. We detected elastic scattering events, from protons in a liquid H2 target, with a double spectrometer consisting of magnets and scintillation counters in coincidence. The incident π− beam was counted by scintillation counters. The cross section was found to have considerable structure. This may be interpreted as interference between the resonant amplitudes and the nonresonant or background amplitude. Very strong destructive interference occurs around P0=2.15 GeV/c, where the cross section drops almost two orders of magnitude in passing through the N*(2190). Another interesting feature of the data is a large narrow peak in the cross section at P0=5.12 GeV/c, providing firm evidence for the existence of a nucleon resonance with a mass of 3245±10 MeV. This N*(3245) has a full width of less than 35 MeV, which is about 1% of its mass. From this experiment we were able to determine the parity and the quantity χ(J+12) for each N* resonance, where χ is the elasticity and J is the spin of the resonance.

The polarization parameter in elastic π−p scattering has been measured, at the Berkeley 184-in. synchrocyclotron, with the use of a polarized proton target. At 318-, 337-, and 390-MeV incident pion kinetic energy, the angular range from 70° to 180° in the center-of-mass system was covered. At 229 MeV, polarization measurements were made in the angular range 150° to 180°. Phase-shift analyses, using these and other published data, were made at the two lowest energies.

Elastic Scattering of Negative Pions by Protons at 230, 290, 370, and 427 Mev

The elastic differential cross section for the scattering of negative pions by hydrogen was measured at laboratory-system pion kinetic energies of 230, 290, 370, and 427 Mev. The elastically scattered pions were detected by a counter telescope which discriminated against recoil protons and inelastic pions on the basis of range. Differential cross sections were obtained at nine angles for each energy and were fitted by a least-squares program to a series of Legendre polynomials. At the three higher energies, D waves are required to give satisfactory fits to the data. The real parts of the forward-scattering amplitudes calculated from this experiment are in agreement with the predictions of dispersion theory. The results of this experiment, in conjunction with data from other pion-nucleon scattering experiments, support the hypothesis of charge independence at these higher energies.

pi--p Elastic Scattering at 1.44 Bev

An investigation of π−+p elastic scattering, made in a liquid propane bubble chamber, is reported. Identification of events is made on the basis of kinematics. The problem of contamination by pion scattering from protons bound in carbon is considered in some detail; it is shown that the latter requires a correction of only 4±2.5% of the total number of events. The angular distribution is presented. It shows a large diffraction peak at small angles and an approximately isotropic plateau over the backward hemisphere. The forward peak is fitted to a black-sphere diffraction pattern with a radius of (1.08±0.06)×10−13 cm. The total elastic cross section is found to be σe=10.1±0.80 mb.

Polarization in pi--p Scattering between 500 and 940 Mev

A graphite-plate spark chamber has been used to analyze the polarization of protons recoiling from π−−p scattering. The observations were made at 90° (c.m. system) pion scattering angle for seven incident pion energies between 500 and 940 Mev, at 120° or 135° for five energies in this interval, and also at 75° for 500 Mev only. The results are compared with predictions of several models used to explain the maxima in the π−−p scattering cross section. Qualitative arguments show that the energy intervals between these maxima are not completely dominated by neighboring single-state resonances. Phase shifts found to be large in scattering also seem to be large in polarization.

$\pi^{-}+ p$ elastic scattering at 1 200 MeV

A bubble chamber investigation of π−+p elastic scattering at 1 200 MeV (K.E.) is reported. The total and differential cross-sections are determined. By extrapolation of the angular distribution, the 0° cross-section is derived and compared with the results obtained with the help of the dispersion relations and the optical theorem. The forward peak is investigated in terms of diffraction scattering and a value for the optical radius is derived.

Measures of the differential effective sections $\pi ±p$ to 410 MeV and 490 MeV forwards

Measurements of π±p elastic differential cross-sections have been performed in the forward direction, using a missing-mass spark chamber spectrometer. The films have been seanned by an automatic apparatus. A phase-shift analysis of the experimental data has been done, leading to three solutions. Various experiments are proposed in order to resolve the ambiguities.
